I didn't say I didn't like the film.  The reason I posed the question in the first place is that I wanted an answer--and expected one. I've already gotten a couple of good theories from people who have responded (in this and in a similar clip).

This moment did NOT ruin the film for me. It was just a question of continuity I had. No need to act like a jerk about my question...calling it "stupid", and me "persnickety".

Joe Pesci's narration from 4:43 to 5:05 doesn't make any real narrative sense. He's talking about the meeting in the past tense...but it's the scene where he gets killed.

Is Nicky recounting the events from the afterlife, or something?

Well, to me, it's supposed to be real-time as if we're with him. This is indicative of when the narration stops suddenly when he's beaten.

When watching any Scorsese film, just sit back and enjoy the ride and dont ask any (stupid) questions. Theres no point in being pernickity about such things, He made the scene to catch the viewer completely by surprise! How can people like you possibly enjoy the great films of all time like this when being so picky ?

@RushLimborg Well, Pesci's narration, and DeNiro's for that matter, aren't meant to be taken as if they are actually speaking to an audience. They're more reflective of the character's thoughts, ideas and opinions. They are a stream of consciousness, if you will. So when Pesci was whacked , that stream of consciousness ceased to be. Therefore his narration stopped, abruptly. It is meant to give the audience the impression that this is it for him.
