You actually don't even have to air dash. If your doing a no-armor run, you can just jump after a half-second when he turns the other way and looks at you. He does it anyway. And it's easier to charge this way.

It's the game's attempt to punish you for camping on the wall to avoid him.

I usually just tap the dash button, but I haven't played X3 in a good year or so, so I'm a bit rusty.

Also, this is the old-school method I learned several years ago.
