Why would we need a bill that enshrines the right to record police? That is ALREADY a First Amendment right.
"The First Amendment protects the right to gather information about what public officials do on public property, and specifically, a right to record matters of public interest." Smith v. City of Cummings (11th Circuit Court of Appeals, 2000) and similar in other Circuit Courts of Appeals.
A politician who can't even spend two seconds saying he doesn't have time to be interviewed at the moment is obviously an enemy of the People and their liberty. My words are chosen advisedly.
Dave, this might be your best video yet. Professional, informative, polite and direct. You provide comprehensive coverage of a very important issue with direct questions.
John Stephen, what a jerk. All these guys one way or another are out for their own self-interests, and that would be fine if only they weren't using aggression to get their way.
all politicians are scumbags. like preachers, they should be required to live as paupers, as john the baptist, with nothing but a cloak eating honey and living in the woods if they want to "represent the people"
John Stephens was blowing you off, plain and simple! He deserves whatever the people see fit for him. If he gets blown out of the race and his ass sent back home, so be it. Sadly it looks asthought the power he enjoys has gone to his head now and so I'd say it's time for a new guy to replace him.
Oh, wait - he knows who you are, or at least he should - there's an interview over there on the right side of the page about Real-ID which he gave you when he was running for Congress. I find it puzzling that he would pull a Martha Coakley on you.
Wow, you'd think John Stephen is not actually running for office. Which is odd, because I have a sign with his name on it in my front yard. Hmm... You'd normally expect that all politicians were camera-hounds. I wonder if you ticked him off at some point in the past without realizing it, Dave? Or does he treat all camera-wielding strangers like that? Easy enough to find out, I guess.
The first guy was your typical scumbag, "I don't care about the people who elected me" kind of trash. The 2nd guy could have said he was "against" video taping and I still would have thought he was alright. That was a real stand up guy.
I don't know, but I like Pepino. No nonsense. "Nothing to fear than they should have nothing to hide". How long has that argument been foisted upon the public by the government and its adherents to bolster their security aspirations? It was always backwards - it's the governement that can't be trusted, that can't be left to its own devices, they can't even balance their own books.
Notice how the last guy is quick with his answer and is not unclear in his answer. I understood him to be saying. 'If they are in public, any public official (politician, fire, police, etc) is fair game. If they are in public, they shouldn't be doing things they don't want to be recorded. Just don't interfere with their ability to do their job.' That is refreshing. I work in the public eye and am aware that my actions can be misinterpreted by an uninformed public, so I need to be extra clear.
John Stevens was very rude.. in any setting if asked a question one either answers the question or says "no comment" but by giving no verbal answer he did answer via a nonverbal communication,he walked away..hmmmm, I'd question his motive for not answerin' the question.. He clearly disagree's with recording officers and other public officials in public..I wouldn't trust Stevens as far as I could throw him.. he has lots of baggage, bypass his name on the ballot if freedom means anything to you..
ive filmed police and they asked what it was for and i just stated that it was for news gathering purposes and they said that as long as photographers are not trying to go out of there way to interfer with the investigation by getting in the way of the officers then they have no problem with that but if its a sensitive subject such as a rape then they might ask you to leave or back away farther for the comfort of the victim i have no problem with that by the way i am in charleston sc
