  • A standing ovation for Billy Taylor.....never heard him until today! My husband told me to look him up, Taylor is his favorite jazz pianist! And he is so right when he says he is the "BEST!" A standing "O" for the bass player too!!! Actually the entire trio is in a class of their own! 10 stars!!!!

  • The bass solo is amazing!

  • This is one of the best piano solos i have ever seen

  • R.I.P. MASTER TEACHER/EDUCATOR!

  • 2:19 - I wanna learn how to do that...

  • On Piano Jazz this week they replayed a show featuring Dr. Taylor. He explained how he came up with this song. It can be heard by going to the NPR Piano Jazz website.

  • Simply a genius...

  • hes a beast on the bass

  • YE...AAA...H... B...O...YYYY!!!!

  • Oh my God, what a loss. A supendous jazz pianist, educator and an all out ambassador for this American made music called JAZZ. I was fortunate to meet him, at the Mutual Musicians Foundation here in Kansas City, Missouri, and the wealth of knowledge he leaves behind will perpetuate his love of jazz. Dr. Taylor will never be forgotten.

  • A sad day for jazz,RIP DR.BILLY TAYLOR

  • I saw Billy play in New York at the Hickory House on several occasions and had an opportunity to speak with him when working for ABC. He was a special man, who shall forever live within me and my love for his music. He brought jazz to so many young people and influenced so many others. I'm gonna miss you Billy....we all will miss you. Howie Soule

  • Another legend has entered into the great beyond. RIP DR. BILLY TAYLOR!

  • Mr. Primack, is there a possibility to obtain the changes for the tune? I can catch about a half of it, but being a lousy listener I cannot get the other one.

    Thanks, engloute

  • i just worked it out..., C, A and G

    its the melody.

  • I to saw him live at the Hickory House 60s

Just an awesome performance, every time Grady Tate drums and then another younger guy, name escapes me

  • what exactly is the name of that song? CAG?? I can not find smth in google...

  • thats alright

  • During the Sixties, I would frequently visit the Hickory House to hear Billy Taylor after finishing my work as a youth worker in Brooklyn.

Billy and his bassist Chris White would join us between sets. I recall my sister and I encouraging him to record "CAG"--it was a tune that allowed him to play with intensity and virtuosity.

Billy always displayed his graciousness and intelligence. It was a pleasure to spend time sharing with him. Bill Honer

  • speechless

  • Wow! Thanks for posting....

  • this is fucking brilliant!

  • yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I wish I had the chance to see Billy Taylor live!!!!!

  • ha i finally got it why the title of this song is CAG

it took me a while but i got it lol

  • I saw him play at Ithaca College "Enduring Masters" program, and boy what a treat that was. His left hand....is amazing!!!! He is an absolutely amazing pianist, I don't understand how anybody could get that far.

  • He has the biggest pair of glasses in jazz. I also heard he has the biggest heart, and in my opinion he is one of the best jazz pianists that ever lived!

  • brilliant said!!! the biggest pair of glasses in jazz. That's true.

  • everything is amazing except the filmer. Why the hell would the camera not be facing someone who is soloing. During most of the drum solo the camera isn't even on the drummer.

  • At 5.01 we see a grate bass solo till 6.36

then comes drums.I thing this is one of the best profetional job in filming and sound engeenearing rena...

  • aw man i went to jazz in july too and it was such a great experience. learn so much from these guys!

  • I had opportunitty to study with Dr.Taylor. What a priveledge and honor it was. His stories, his knowledge, his sense of touch and emotion are second to none. Its a shame more people do not know who he is. I also had the opportunity to study with Chip, Gerri Allen, and Dr.Taylor at Jazz in July at UMass Amherst several years ago. Fantastic tune...I have a HAND written copy from Dr.Taylor himself. That is now a family heirloom as far as I am concerned.

  • I went to a jazz camp and had Chip as my combo coach and Steve as my drum coach and theyre amazing guys, craziest musicians in jazz today

  • BEING SOMEWHAT o l d I SAW HIM PLAY OFTEN AT tHE HICKORY hOUSE ON 52 ST IN THE 1960 S W Grady Tate on Drums, at one period

  • chip jackson is so ridiculous!

  • Nice tune. I don't think I've heard much of Billy Taylor. Chip Jackson and Steve Johns make a good team.

  • Great clip, Dr Taylor is really quite the musician. Chip Jackson and I played in local rock bands together when we were just seeds, he was always a few steps up on us. He was a fine friend and a great talent ,I have not seen him in several years now, it's great to see the clip.

  • This is one of the greatest videos on youtube. If you don't like this song, there is seriously something wrong with you. YOU DA MAN BILLY!

  • Billy is great & Chip is awesome; also his trio at Lincoln Center for the young people on the educational channel.
