  • No matter how great Ruffin was.....sometimes, for mysterious reasons, the greatness doesn't translate to a solo career. David apparently had a crazy ass bad full of himself attitude which didn't endear him to everyone he worked with. Levi had the good sense to stay with The Four Tops. David should have stayed with the Temps in retrospect. But ironically, his leaving gave the world Dennis Edwards......so who knows what was really meant to be?

  • If he managed to stay drug free, and if he stayed with the temps throughout his entire career he would have been way bigger than he was, still the best in my book though

  • can someone please tell me what david ruffin song is this? search money weed blow - juicy j

starts at 0:01 - 0:18 please help me. i would appreciate it.

  • Omg ` This Was A GOOD SONG TOTALLY SHUD HAVE BEEN PUT OUT THERE ( :

  • The white guy looked like a bother with that head move.

  • @getajobfatboy racist

    lol!!

  • what a great upload- top of the heap-

  • I'm sorry... but David was Temptations.

  • As I understand it, he was rather self-destructive. He abused coke and crack. This was part of the real reason he didn't last as a Temp. He locked horns directly with Gordy and made alot of enemies. This was probably the main reason why Motown didn't really promote Ruffin as an artist. It's a shame because I've been a fan of David since I'm a kid! He was a fucked up guy. I can't swallow his violence towards women. It bothers me. You still can't mistake his talent. He's EPIC, a LEGEND.

  • @TroyDavidAlexander yea he tried to sur motown they didnt like him

  • Considering the circumstances, David had a solid solo career. Three R&B top 10 albums, two top 20 albums, and one #1 R&B album. "Walk Away From Love" sold over a million copies. You're not being "rejected" if you're selling a million records. Not today and surely not back in those days as a young black solo artist. Most talented isn't always most successful. Check out the garbage that tops the charts these days.

  • no matter what the ppl say abouth david .he was 1 of the greatest ! the lord must have a great choire there above, and we all ill c and hear them again .

  • David Ruffin was the temptations, you could of put almost any of motowns backup singers behind him and they would of been successful.

  • In my opinion david ruffin was/ is a much better singer than eddie denis and the rest of the temptations he could sing deep regulsr and sometimes even falsetto. Plus he's a better performer

  • @Slimhost216 true

  • @a1991aron slimhost216 says thanks

  • David Ruffin was always captivating, to say the least, when he performed. When he took the stage, everybody else would be overshawdoed by him. But his solo career wasn't as successful as it was when he was with the Temptations, partly because of lack of support from Motown and his drug addiction. He had the talent to be the greatest vocalist and entertainer that ever lived. But after he left the Temps, his career didn't materalize to its fullest. But still, his legacy that he left says it all!

  • I would have love too have been there, look like they were having a hell of a time when David and Eddie took the stage. In my opinion they were the show, and I have read that many of times when they hit the stage they just took it over.

  • David sure had his demons..But...He was a genius..The Greatest Singer Of This Century..Although, this performance is far from his finest..

  • Some folks blame Motown for Ruffin's failures as a solo performer. David joined the Warner Bros label in the late 1970s. His albums still failed to sell. Whose fault is that?

  • @mrogi12 "fans"

  • @mrogi12 I`ll tell you who`s fault it was..... Warner Brothers!! What other major Black artist did they have on their label? NO ONE. The also didn`t have the writers or the producers for a talent such as Davids. If you listen to any of his records from Warner Brothers, the songs sucked...not his voice.

  • @mrogi12 no David albums actually did good in the 70's the highest in went to was the top 35 and the lowest was the top 5 he just wasnt really popular

  • David Ruffin is quite possibly the greatest male singer ever to walk planet Earth!

  • I have a question about this video.

What was that strange count between 4:59 to 5:00? Original was edited this way?

  • The DVD was converted into 2 video fifes and joined afterward,

  • @mrogi12 whats the dvd name please?

  • David Ruffin was already an established superstar when he went solo. Everybody knew who he was. His albums were available in all the record stores but nobody bought them. His live concerts failed to sell tickets. The public simply rejected him as a solo artist.

  • @mrogi12 Motown refused to promote those records. Young people, DJs and the like are digging up old tracks that should/could have been hits with even minimal promotion. No record hits without promotion. Motown chose what records to promote regardless of a recording's merit. ALL LABELS DO THIS. This is the very reason why Gladys Knight and the Spinners left the label.

  • I don't agree that the public rejected him. He wasn't promoted nearly as well as Motown's other acts at the time, and when he was with WB he was essentially "just another black artist". The other problem is that David's best works weren't publicized until after he died - those being the "David" album and the "So Soon We Change" album. His early stuff was good, but paled in comparison to "David", in my opinion.

  • @mrogi12 how do you explain this concert if you look in the crowd you'll see that there's a lot of people in the audience dont forget soul train and his 1982 1985 at the appollo and live aid plus 1989-1991 so shutup

  • @mrogi12 How does one of your singles sell a million copies if you're being rejected? He could have been more successful had he kept his nose clean, but his solo career wasn't a total failure. To this day, David has a loyal fanbase. I was only 5 years old when he died. I just became a fan 3 months ago so you can't simply judge his success by how many records he sold back then. He made an everlasting impact. People will be discovering and appreciating his music for years to come.

  • @cowboys3000 no but if you hear his interviews he was talkin about how motown didnt treat him rite(like a marvin gay or michael jackson) thats why he left nd warner bros didnt do anything for him

  • Comment removed

  • One reason and I am sure that there are others, Berry Gordy black listed him and refused to release him from his contract. If David would have had the push like Diana Ross did and we all know why Diana got what she wanted , her and Berry was doing the do. And David was not taken any shit from him. Berry has done alot of wrong to alot of Motown Stars

yes David did have his problems but if he had gotten the attention that he deserve who knows what would have happen

  • Why did Ruffin fail as a solo performer? Nobody bought any of his 10 solo albums. His talent was cosmic. He should have been a superstar after leaving the Temptations.

  • that hard

  • The master at work

  • he turned into an asshole when he was with the temptations. and look what happend to him. he died. its a waste of talent

  • first off ass almost all the orginal temps died specificaly the ninties because they were old david ruffin was not a waste of talent he did everythong except drugs musical before he died he is and will alwas be the like the micheal jackson to the jackson 5 in the sixties that is the temptations

  • Sorry, you're wrong.

    Ruffin: Died from heroin overdose.

    Kendricks: died from lung cancer.

Williams: suicide - gunshot to the head.

    Franklin: Died - stroke.

Here's a little factoid: none of the Temps died because they were old. None of them lived past 64, if I recall correctly. And each one of them died under tragic circumstances, not age.

  • Turned into an asshole? So Diana Ross and every other 'front man' that wanted top billing or 'feature' status is an asshole? There was a problem within the Temptations since there were so many talented artists. Ruffin went his own way.

  • The singing is amazing..How can a man full of drugs and alcohol still sing like a bird!!!! He is the best!!!

  • I wasn't born when the Tempts were big, but Ruffin is one of the best ever

  • Ruffin was replaced with former r Dennis Edwards, wh Despondent that he had been fired from the group that he felt he had single-handedly brought to success, Ruffin began crashing Temptations' concerts. When the group started to perform a Ruffin-era song such as "My Girl" or "Ain't Too Proud to Beg", Ruffin himself would appear on the stage, grab the microphone from Dennis Edwards and steal the show, The Temptations resorted to hiring extra security to prevent Ruffin from attending their show

  • Yeah, yeah ... says who?

Dennis Edwards said in an interview that the group "invited" David Ruffin to the stage.

  • Whole bunch of people said in books and in the movie about The Temptations Google the group or David Ruffin Story

  • You should cite Wikipedia on that

  • no problem I just cut and paste Wikipedia is where I got that infro

every body when you're listen ing just Wikipedia the Artist or group you might learn something

  • i love the end when he's just screaming "yeah." so talented

  • thank you so much for posting man!! been waiting for it!

  • What a showman, even right up until the end. Imagine how he would've been in the 1960's with the temps had Gordy allowed him to ad-lib like this.

  • omg this is a gud one thnks for putting it on here..

  • Jimmy -Your comment about David's glasses shows how unsophisticated you are... ungrateful snot. The man was amongst the most talented singers-performers for many years. Give it up for him.

  • right you are, this is amazing performance.

I can't seperate, Marvin, David, Luther, Donny, poss James Ingram. They are my top..oh of course Stevie.

  • i like the faster pace, its different and it sounds good.

  • I would have liked it better had David stuck with the original melody of the song. But nice find anyway. THANKS!!!
