I know clarkson was making a jib, but he does bring up a good point. We shouldn't worry about how fast cars can go, a bit more about how fast they can stop. Course these days, cars make little difference when we have people who are so brain dead that they think texting while driving is a good idea. Hell, I even saw a man with a laptop typing away while he was driving now. Man, I miss the old days when all we had to worry about was the drunkards. No tech protects from this level of stupid.

Thank you Clarkson for illustrating this, I always run in to morons who argue that sports cars are dangerous. People are dangerous simple is that, and if you don't care about cars you won't be a good driver. Gear heads like me, we love cars, we want cars with the best handling, the best brakes etc. And we really care about being good drivers, and for the record, I have never cause an accident!

For the money it cost to buy a base model Lexus GS (which has everything as standard) you will not find anything else of the same quality, comfort or safety. Obviously I would take a porsche over lexus any day. But it costs 4 times the amount to buy it.

Everyone going at 70 on motorways would be so dangerous, just like in average speed zones. If one person rear ends someone, the long line of people behind them also doing 70 (who are glaring at their speedometer and calculating averages) slam right in to them.

@subaruWRCimpreza i think it wouldn't if the porsche's tyres and breaks are warm... everything on a sportscar has to be on operating-temp. for ideal results - the lexus is an "ordinary" luxury car for everyday-use, by far not built for the speeds the porsche's going, so the breaks would very easily overheat compared to the 996, but they work fine already when cold ;)

This is a great vid because it's still relevant today in many ways. In the USA I hear all this love for old things, classic cars, etc, but also the love of old buildings, old engineering, old stoves... stuff like Disney an example of dated ideas like circuses are really old world things that hold us back.

Brake distances have come down like a falling stone since this. Most auto crits will call anything stopping over 150ft long and a 911 will stop in about 100ft.
