Looks like the same reels I use, Senator 9/0.. they just redesigned them and lowered the price to $149! I just posted a small shark attack vid from down there... cool vid!
awesome got any tips on how i can start fishing in the surf like u... i dont know how to cast out far.. and im a pro 8 foot caster... i never tried a 10 foot pole or 12
I'm headed to Grand Isle Louisiana next week and could use some help. What size hook should I use? Do I need a steel leader? Do I just use cut bait and if so, how large of a piece? And do they only feed at night? Thanks
I use 14/0 circle hooks for most sharks. Using a whole whiting, mullet, or part of a stingray. For larger baits I use 20/0 circle hooks. Mono leaders will work on most sharks, but the few BIG ones out there 480# 7 strand cable is preferred. For a simple set up that will catch most sharks get a jigmaster reel, sturdy 5-6' reel, 30# line.
I like large, barbless, kahle hooks. I cast with an ABU 7000i reel with the freespool set REALLY loose. My line is #80 braided mainline with #40-#80 leader, and a 7 1/2 to 9 foot heavy action rod.
I like tuna chunks, whole live croaker (hooked through lower jaw and out nostril), and I also use whole squid.
If the surf is heavy, I cross-stitch my baits with scent-free floss to hold them together.
Cut off 3' of mainline an replace leader after shark catch, shark skin will destroy your line.
THANKS FOR TAGGING AND RELEASING! wow sharks from the surf! In SC my brother caught a 4ft bonnethead shark on a little peice of squid! Around there if you use whiting for bait you end up with a stingray with a 7 1/2 ft wingspan

i release all sharks i catch, unless they are gut hooked and do not appear as if they will survive. Rarely, happens though.

How do you get your bait out? with a standup rod you would have to use kites or kayaks right?
