Having been to war and seen horrible things I can say that this movie is how I wish it would have been. To see such beautiful and existential things in war would have been awe inspiring, but to be honest I was too fucking scared about me or some of my guys getting hurt to think about such things...
Listening to dark knight, batman begins, inception and now this movies soundtrack composed by hans zimmer ,i can say hes one of the greatest music composers out there.A brilliant musical genius.Cheers ...
The Thin Red Line refers to the British stand against against charging Russian cavalry in the Crimean war. At that time the British army still wore red tunics.
To provide more fire power against a charging enemy the Brits normally formed a square, or stood four ranks deep. However, on this occasion they stood only two deep hence, the thin red line.
Because the British army was small compared to the size of Empire it had to defend, the term was applied to the whole army.
Terrence Malick's existential work of art The thin red line, encompasses the gift of life and explores the ideology of "being" thoroughly. It is an exploration/Investigation into the human spirit, what it stands for, and our own quest for clarity. An attempt to find a light in the dark and within ourselves that gives answers to, what we're for? what we're doing? and why we're doing it? An unequivocal brooding mass of questions, that have an unlimited possibility for answers should be seen by all
It took me awhile to like this movie. I actually fell asleep when it was in theaters. I got the VHS way back when because I'm a closet WWII historian. After a few more viewings I've really come to see many messages and viewpoints on the war and war in general. Read Studs Turkle's "The Good War".
Here's the rub, it's an anti-war message (as is so popular these days). It's not just about man vs nature and man vs man. It's about the futility of war.
Listening to this piece, even while not watching the movie , I'm almost to tears. "The Thin Red Line." Would have never been "The Thin Red Line." With out Hans Zimmer, This brings on the same , slow miserable feeling that I had when I bought the DVD and first watched it, tip m'hat to hans zimmer.
seriously amazing piece of music to stand alongside a beautiful film......but how people can try and compare or rate TTRL to SPR is beyond me, 2 different faces of war in 2 different scenarios...yet both portraying what our guys went through during war, the death and everything with it, and last but not least, how lucky we are that they sacrificed themselves for us.......RIP to every single soldier lost in recent times to the many many years ago......Lost but never forgotten
Assolutamente meravigliosa in um film che adoro, Hans è un grande, in ogni grande film le sue musiche mi fanno emozionare, in particolare silence che è il pezzo maggiormente usato con perfezione in molte scene.
"This great evil. Where does it come from? How'd it steal into the world? What seed, what root did it grow from? Who's doin' this? Who's killin' us? Robbing us of life and light. Mockin' us with the sight of what we might've known. Does our ruin benefit the earth? Does it help the grass to grow, the sun to shine? Is this darkness in ...you, too? Have you passed to this night?"
this music's been used so much since TRLfirst came out but it was the genius of Malick that helped inspire Hans Zimmer to create such wonderful music.
i think this music is very intense, the air around u becomes thicker as u can cut it with a knive. u feel like some others breaths fluid around, u can`t be appart, just cant
@robertjordan85 why the fuck did you people put thumbs down??? RJ was quoting Sean Penn from the movie when this music is being played. A beautiful scene, however very disheartning but that's the point. The pacific was horrifying. 1st Sgt. Welsh was at his end. Witt was just killed and the light in Welsh died out with Witt. "Where's your spark now"....
@robertjordan85 so beautiful...all of the sergeant's monologues made me cry...and made me realise just how true it is. The spark is always gone...sometimes you wonder if it was ever there. That's just life.
spv and thr cant be compared. There both great films and built around ww2. But they do different aspects and views of war. i do agree though that thr is a better film. Makes me even tear up sometimes.
me as well THR is one of my favorite films of all time. SPR is more for the action junkies, but THR is the most accurate portrayal of man at war. the endless waiting and the sheer terror of those moments in combat.
@rudkappa god completely wrong there.....they both portray what they meant to, SPR showing how it was in france, on the beach etc etc and how we suffered so much death, going from town to town to try to keep territory.....TTRL is showing the effect of those in the middle of nowhere with only the enemy to face.........i can admittedly say i cried at the end of SPR, whilst with TTRL it was more a feeling of sadness when witt died.
I agree with ALL the below comments, a FAR better film than Saving Private Ryan, In fact I think that The Thin Red Line is the BEST film ever!It transports me each and every time I watch it and each time I see something new.
but sadly this film is overlooked its a masterpiece better than SVP , SVP is more about the physical endurance through war whereas TTRL is more about the mental endurance it was such an amazing film one of my all time favourites
I don't even think you can compare this movie to Saving Private Ryan. SPR is a holywood action movie. The Thin Red Line is much more deeper, philosophical... In fact, I don't even like the action sequences in it.
@oldsnake8592 This movie is more touchy and hypnotic.. it really sucks you in .. so I agree, I felt more emotions coming from this movie than Saving Private Ryan.
@oldsnake8592 It was a very very different brand of war film. It was much more about the effect of war on nature and the hypocrisy of so called heroism and duty.
@hsybcmpny There had been movies like this even before, but they were all about Vietnam. I've understood, that WW2 is in america so called "good war". Allies won and "he world was saved". All the movies has to be stereotypically about patriotic heroism like Saving Private Ryan, Windtalker, Sands of Iwo Jima etc., where the enemy is fanatic nazi, or sadistic jap, they haven't got any human features left.
That's one reason, why this movie was so spectacular(but oh, so underrated).
@oldsnake8592 I personally feel the same. IMHO while both movies are great, The Thin Red Line captured war from a first-person's POV more so than Saving Private Ryan. As much as I feel Saving Private Ryan is one of the most epic movies on the subject of war, the one scene where Tom Hank's character fires his sidearm in final desperation at the approaching German tank and subsequently observes it exploding (from a US fighter's barrage) felt too contrived. I never felt that with TTRL.
@oldsnake8592 I also do, but frankly these are two different movies. Or maybe the difference lies in their definition, SPR being more of a movie while - to me - TTRL is a cinematographic film.
Can't stand this movie but brilliant Zimmer soundtrack.
