  • Oh man ! That song is just so : no word, just feeling !!!!!!!!

  • he never let go away the love for his wife..........."hurt in your heart" ...maybe because we can never forget the first and probably only love.

  • any sauce?

  • soul music

  • This is just breath taking in its beauty. I'm a fan.

  • Your tortured heart has given us the legacy of some of the most beautiful music ever written, lyrics sublime musicality beyond compare.. RIP John Martyn..

  • The little dancer reminds me of my first born daughter Louise, she and her sister Jane did ballet together I wonder sometimes if they ever remember their, Dad )0(

  • Incredible, he feels every second of the song really beautufull (-:

  • So very fine...

  • this man is a legend played with all the greats but none could better him no matter what true class will live through his music for ever

  • amazing song. look for 'back to stay' too. made me cry that one! glad ive discovered john martyn, why is he not widely known in this country!? plus the fact he was friends with nick drake endears him to me !

  • beyond beautiful.

  • how many tears have been shed to this

  • was a classic from the day john martyn wrote it.

  • John Martyn conveyed the vulnerability of man so beautifully. No wonder he cried during performances. Musicians in touch with their souls are tortured beings indeed.

  • @123jsbach

That's a very astute observation, 123jsbach, and beautifully worded.

  • this got so much soul.

  • This is the most beautiful song i've ever heard in my life! Im a 20 Year old Drum n bass producer and i Wish more people my age could appreciate amazing music such as this Song! Thank you John!!!

  • IT IS SO UTTERLY PERFECT - A GENIOUS AND AN ANGEL, ELAINE BALL

  • @MicheleVK What? he was back with Beverly? Are you sure about this? John died in Ireland where he was living with his girlfriend Theresa!

  • @MicheleVK What? he was back with Beverly? Are you sure about this? John died in Ireland where he was living with his girlfriend Theresa!

  • @tomscotland

Well, Tom...to be perfectly honest - I could very well be mistaken. I'll just delete the earlier comment and do a bit more reading. =o)

    Cheers, Darlin'!

  • did his wife take him back after he wrote this? she better have.

  • john martyns most personal song, theres a clip on youtube of him talking about and singing a most moving version of this beauty, i think he loses it a wee bit,go look

  • @hashyhead Yeah, John often cried during performances...and displayed anger, outrage, tenderness, emptiness, etc. I believe he used music to comfort himself, and by doing so offered so much healing to others. RIP

  • @MicheleVK I can't see how anyone could perform this wonderful heartfelt song without crying, makes me well up every time.

  • Oh Gawd, to come across this on YT after all these years and to see younger folks, who could not possibly have ever seen him live, appreciate this track, makes me tear up ;) Bless you John for the years of young adulthood I got through with you, I hope my kids have someone they remember in a similar way. For those who never got the chance to see him close up, yes he really was a great bloke!

  • @macasweb I feel the same way about his music, and the man. Glad you enjoyed the clip, though I played little part in it's magic. I'm only a messenger. =o)

  • @macasweb I'm thirteen and managed to see John on his last tour a couple of years ago. Great night. Such a shame he had to leave us, eh? R.I.P. Big man.

  • @LukeCowanMusic I'll raise a glass to you. Some one so young listening to this, you've been well educated

  • I just love John Martyn, he has a voice i'll never tire of listening to... This song is so moving... Thanks for posting it xxx

  • My brother and I, have about 30,000 Albums between us..give or take. But when you find a song like this..which just pulls you in and puts out so much emotion...well, not much can beat it. John Martyn sings from the heart...and you can tell he's 'lived' it. And they always say, "you can't sing about it and make it believable, unless you've lived it yourself". A true songwriter from the heart and soul.

  • @DamGreek The man was truly amazing

  • Wow..oh fuckin' wow. My brother and I share songs we find on youtube. He just sent me the link to this song. Wow..oh fuckin' wow. Heartbreaking. I can't keep the tears from coming. John Martyn--amazing. Just simply amazing!!

  • @DamGreek Hey DamGeek - you and your brother have great taste in music. I'm glad this track from John moved you.

  • @MicheleVK Wouldn't allow me to reply to your post..so I've added another post..which is a reply to your comment. Greetings to you from California...

  • @DamGreek - Hmmmmm, don't know why you can't reply...but, at least you could post in one way or another. 30,000 Albums??????? 30,000? That's more than most Radio Stations I've worked at! LOL Y'all should open an internet streaming service and play them to the world! =o) No doubt it'd be beter than Radio these days...they only rotate 100 songs at a time, and by 'at a time' I mean they'll only change about 10 in a month! Radio is in a Dire state! Meh

    Cheers,

    M.

  • John Martyn could pack more emotional depth into a single song than most bands could manage in their entire career.

  • @astrophonix John comforted himself with music, he poured himself into it - few can comprehend this kind of depth, fewer still can emulate it. Monetary success eluded John in his life - but history will crown him, he is an immortal talent! I'm glad you feel his presence...so do I. =o) John's a healer.

  • @MicheleVK great commment!

  • @astrophonix So true!

  • this song is beautiful in everyway. and possibly some of the greatest fretless bass playing ive ever heard in my life (sorry jaco). does anyone know who plays on this track?

  • @AFIEBHC

That, Sir, would be the one and only Danny Thompson - the greatest stand-up bass player who ever lived! =o)

  • @MicheleVK cheers man, ill check him out!

  • @MicheleVK

I agree, DT is a fantastic stand-up bass player, but John Giblin played fretless bass on this song

  • @jamesg1213

I stand corrected. Thank you James! That'll be me making assumptions again. Silly Moo. =o)

  • @AFIEBHC

    This just in!!!!!

    CORRECTION!

That'll be John Giblin...I'm reliably informed. blink, blink, blink...

  • Only 17,000 views , How Sad . Sign of the times i suppose !

  • @johnmcnab

No...I disagree - John was never a commercial artist, just under a thousand plays a month is about what he's garnered, per track, for around 4 decades.

That's not a bad little earner, if the music is all your after...John never really sold his soul for fame like so many of his contemporaries did. John never forgot his Mates and he never sucked up. I expect it'll be around a thousand plays a month for another half century, if not more.

History will treat him kindly, as it should.

  • @MicheleVK Heh Michelle i agree , but coudlnt help thinking that its such a shame music like this isnt more commercially widespread , but i suppose most artists with real talent and integrity make the music for themselves first and foremost as John has done here . God you can feel his pain even after all these years ! Im just glad iv got an ear for music like this which feeds the soul Peace ! x .

  • @MicheleVK Well put, it will treat him kindly.

  • @MicheleVK If you think only a half century you,re wrong! He is going to be revered in future just as Robert Johnston is now and will be joined by other great musicians like Peter Green and Jimmy Page. For me as a musician (guitar) it,s always been his honesty,he never tried to be clever and just made sure that the sounds echoed what he was feeling. In some songs the words are meant to be secondary to the feeling induced by the overall sound. Love the man and miss him.

  • @narobsharpe Ya know what, narobsharpe? I think your spot on with that. I too am a guitarist, and a songwriter - and I spent over 25 years as a Radio Presenter - I must tell you...John Martyn was my Elvis, my Lennon, I think he was divinely gifted. John wasn't afraid to open up his soul and just pour it out. I don't think he did this only for the audience or the listener...I think he did it because he had to do it. I believe he comforted himself with music and song...it was his medication.

  • @johnmcnab Well if you knew as I do that 9/10 people are ignorant idiots with musical taste on a par with their lacking personality and education .... you would never expect so much of so many :) People who really understand great music and real musicians would never EVER diss this great man, even if they didn't like the music. For instance I don't like Queen but I know they are legendary.

A true genius and will be sorely missed, his loss tempered only by the sweet soothing sounds he left us

  • a true master,he is always in my head, and am sure he is where he wants to be

  • he was one of the greatest artists of all time to me.. his songs keep my memories inside of them x

  • absoloutely incredible.

  • song writing of the very highest order.

    C'est une chanson très émotive.

Oui, John était le Roi de coeurs cassés et maître de cordes cassées.

Je suis heureux que vous aimez le trombone de film clip.

  • What a song. Why as humans do we reflect in sadness. Look forward with joy and hope. I won't make the same mistakes again...enough said for me.

    Rest in peace big chap.

  • I admire your sentiment mate, but that is sometimes easier said than done...sometimes your circumstances can very much dictate your outlook on life.Sadly.

  • @gordonw01

    Forgiveness is a powerful thing.

Trust, like Paradise, once lost one must toil to regain it.

    Nothing is impossible.

Love is like sailing - you gotta take the rough with the smooth...

sometimes you just gotta get outta the boat, eh? LOL
