  • would anyone recommend a dodge dart as a first car?

  • @ToXxic36oh Yes. if it's the 1970 340 ddb. It was my first car in the 80s. Downside is it only got 10 mpg.

  • When the woman cuts in to speak, what do the two sheriffs say to each other?

  • I had one with a 318

  • Al Bundy' s car ;)

  • Exactly what my boyfriend has, but his is the 1971 Dodge Dart Custom, same thing as the swinger...but is a 2 door.

  • That video is of rather crisp-and-clean quality for being made in 1971, don't you think?

  • My brother's friend used to drive a Swinger. When he was still in high school. THREE YEARS AGO. I called it the "Quagmire Car," lol.

  • My older brother had a yellow Swinger. We called it the "Flying Banana."

  • Thanks for the video...one of the best looking and most reliable compact ever built. I own one in cream with a black vinyl roof and I constantly get compliments and offers from kids like that "ChomuSclavus" down below (what a clueless troll, lol !)

  • hahaha i got one looks just like it

  • Buford T. Justice?

  • The 65 darts with the carter carb was the best dart ever made

  • Dodge Swinger, ugh what a name, a marketing department who is totally clueless and trying to be 'hip'.

  • And I'm sure only your Mother loves your face.

  • yourkiddies

  • I remember my older sister bought one of these NEW. It was gold with a black vinal top, slant 6, 2 door.

She beat the shit out of it and never changed the oil. She near totaled it in an accident and had it rebuilt. I think these were OK cars, not fantastic but good.

  • I had one EXACTLY like that color and everything.

  • Al Bundy's Dream MAchine....

  • almost forgot, mine was grampa gold with the black checkered upholstery.... they musta got a sale price on those 2 colors puke green and grampa gold cuz i swear i've never seen one painted any other color!

  • No kidding slant sixes are though engines, i just got mine fixed after 30 years of service, the mechanic just polished the cylinders and installed standard rings, no oversize rings were needed!

  • It seems like half their production run that year was painted in that same green color....

  • Jackie Gleason based his character in "Smokey and the Bandit" on Sheriff Joe Higgins!

  • THat is a beautiful Dodge. That Dart is one VERY SERIOUS CHRYSLER!

  • We had one in our family for 13 or 14 years. It was a very good car. I think we finally got rid of it around 1985. Wish we still had it.

  • My '71 Swinger had over a half million miles on it before the 198 six gave up. Broke the #2 connecting rod. Last I heard, the car still has the 225 I put in, running on the original 904 automatic.

Oh, I will add that even with a broken connecting rod and no oil pressure, my Swinger STILL made got me home!

  • Now Chrysler really built a motor that really lasts forever

  • It's cool how Chrysler (Dodge) commercials had some great character actors of the time in them. The Sheriff guy looks very familiar and the Deputy is played by Conlan Carter who is best known for his role as 'Doc' in the TV series 'Combat!' These are great, thanks for the post!

  • Oh all this macho posturing..I drove alot of em in the late 70's-- darts were solid, the weakest link was the 907 auto transmission- so your partly right. All amc's had them too and they shitted the bed too around 120 k miles...fun cars though

  • I believe 4-wheel drums were standard, even on the v8 models?

  • Yes they were joh2. My 71 has a 318 and 10 inch drums all around with no power assist. Its like trying to stop a freight train. Still a fun car though.

  • Ok, I guess a Swinger may last a good while, usually. However, there is a video of a Swinger destroying its tranny on a dyno. Search for "dodge swinger dyno" and watch.

  • i saw the video, the tranny didnt go bad, the drive shaft destroyed it. did you see how bad the wheel was? they should have fixed that before they ran it on a dyno.

  • Chomosciavus. these cars were some of the best in that era..including european and japanese. We had a 73 Dart Swinger with a 318 v8...it flew with that engine

  • My Dad had the 4 door Dart with that engine. He sold it for $150 the year before I got my license ( I guess it was about 14 years at the time). I wound up with a slightly newer Plymouth with a Slant 6. Nice enough car, but it was no 318!

  • "Oh, so THAT'S what a junker looked like in Mint Condition." How many miles did the average '71 Swinger last before breaking down?

Your joking ChomoSclavus, right? Slant six Dodges and Plymouths were known for reliability and dependability. It really is to bad you were born fourteen years later. You are wasting valuable air...

  • my 72 was goin strong with 189,000 on it when i sold it this past spring.....318/904 combo. ac and power nothin! i miss the damn thing already.

  • The average Dart Swinger lasted a good long time. In fact, the Darts (and their Plymouth equivalent, the Valiant) were renowned for being almost indestructible. There are still many of them on the roads today -- pretty impressive given that they're often over 35 years old!

  • Well, considering I still drive one...

I'd say they last long enough.

  • They sure do last long. I bought one from its original 89 year-old owner years ago, and it's still going stong. 263K+ on a car that's nearly 38 is no accident. No one has ever said the Slant Six was junk, just ignorant Chevy goons. Go buy a Camaro. Hell, dig a hole in your backyard, you're bound to find one.

  • well considering that my neighbor has one, my friend has one, and i have one, id say they last a long time

  • Vomit must've been a fad that year. Glad I was born a good 14 years later. (Wish I was born a good 29 instead.) Hey, why isn't the Dodge Swinger on Wikipedia?? Someone needs to create it: en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Dodge_Swinger

  • Chomu, The Swinger was just a variation on the 2-door Dodge Dart.

  • white wall tires, vinyl roof and vomit green exterior...
