  • Wrong many magazines that put the cobalt ss/SC and the ion RL head to head find that the RL is .5 sec faster

  • Stock for stock, a Cobalt SC will take an Ion SC.... So it really doesn't matter that the Ion is only stage 2 while the Cobalt is stage 3. Cobalt still pawns either way. Even with the 'same motor'.

  • @dirtyd2005 i really dont think there from different companies...technically yes saturn is saturn, chevy is chevy but they do have 2 letters in common....GM....same engine, different name, different stage performance, same company...and it sounded like you were using a turbo with that high pitch squeeling or does the SC do the same thing

  • @Whiplash8807 a turbo doesnt do a high pitch scream like that. its called a supercharger whine. turbos should never make that sound... if anything they will make a "surge" sound because of air escaping at full boost. (you hear it more on straight pipes.) and i think he was comparing the stage difference of different brands not the actual cars. because u r correct they are almost the exact same car. same motor trans and frame.. ion has a different body and isnt as stiff as the cobalt due to the

  • I like Ions more for a few reasons..they look like sleepers, the quad doors, and the room in the back seat. Friend of mine owns a cobalt and the back seat is a joke. In my RL I've got the compfiest Recaro seats and a good back seat. Plus it's better on insurance. :)

    So as a college student..Ion's awesome.

  • @igottmituns i have a cobalt. and my back seat is actually pretty roomy. im 6'0 200lbs and i fit in my ack seat no problem. so idk who else you want to fit back there? i love the redlines. only reason i didnt get a redline instead of the cobalt is the dumb dash board. i hate that its off to the side. and it didnt come with a boost gauge. besides that i like them better.. but the cobalt has planety of room in the back seat. :)

  • i like both redlines and the ss... i have an 06 ss/sc. i took one redline out the other day coming home..... it was fairly fast and i took it till we slowed down at 130... mines stock and i dont know what he had on his, the same engine but different bodies...

  • i test drove both the SS and redline, and bought the redline because:

    1. identical under the hood ('05)

    2. redlines look sweeter by a longshot (mines black)

    3. the SS interior sucked compared to the redlines.

    only thing that pisses me off is the sucky stereo system, i added 2-tens in the back but didnt help much.

    One system i was VERY impressed with was the scion Tc, i almost bought that but didnt because it wasnt fast enough.

  • actually, the cobalt was a death trap, you'd get injured in the most minor front end collisions, the ion is a new chassis what is quite safe, then came the cobalt which is based on the ion (ion came out in 03, cobalt in 05).

  • sorry, the cavalier was a death trap, looks like the ion driver doesn't know how to drive if they can't keep up with a mechanically identical car.the 2L ecotec is actually a destroked 2.2L ecotec, the 2.4 is a stroked 2.2, the 2.2 debuted in 01 in the opel speedster and they altered that base engine to give us the 2 liter and later the 2.4.

  • Cobalt SS is to Ion Redline as Infiniti G35 is to Nissan 350Z... It should be neck and neck. From the factory no two cars are exactly the same. There are alot of different combinations of transmissions! :-) Look into it :-P

    about your redlining at 7500.. you should trow it back down to at least 7100Rpm.. since the spring and valve tend to brake over 7300Rpm..

  • How did he get 7500 anyway? My Stage 1 GM PCM flash went from 6500 stock to 7000.... How you getting over 7000? I did an aftermarket pulleyboys 2.6 pulley with a blower snout shave because the 2.6 made by another company that did not require the shave was sold out and I wanted it NOW! My boost is probably (no guage 2005) about 18 PSI and I really need a CAI and Exhaust to let this thing breath! I blew the baffles out of the stock muffler and they rattled bad. Saturn replaced for free.

  • my stage kit is not a GM stage kit. Intense and GM are completely different companies if you dont know that. I'm hitting 7500 because its tuned for that from Intense. im pushing 15lbs with a CAI and nothing else.

  • Whats this stage 2 stage 3 shit? Saturn does trims in levels 2, 3 and rdline. Thats not a red line, or else he must have mods in his cobalt because they have the same engine. It cant be a saturn ion 3 2.4 liter because saturn didnt use that engibe until 2006. 2.4 is 175 horsepower. So obviosly somethings fishy.

  • obviously, you shouldn't post. gm stage 2 is a power upgrade. (41whp). intense is an aftermarket company making similar kits.

  • One thing. If you learned how to read it said the REDLINE has a GM STAGE 2 and I have INTENSE STAGE 3. Meaning the Superchargers are upgraded. and yes it was a REDLINE. Im not an idiot.

  • Never seen a RSX-S beat a Cobalt SS/SC unless it had a turbo setup. but mod for mod a SS/SC is gonana kill a RSX-S. Hell my LS will run side by side with a RSX-S.

  • Yeah make sure you're racing a ss supercharged not a ss 2.4. There is a major difference. And I'm calling bs on beating both. I beat a stock rsx-s and I was stock by 5 cars.

  • All I have is Exhaust and Intake. It was a Colbalt SS That RSX probably didn't Know how to drive or something was wrong with it if you beat him by 5 Cars, And are you sure it was a Type-S With a K20A2 not a K20A3. I have looked up the specs on both cars also. The only thing you beat me on is Torque. But My rev limit is 8300, Whats Yours around 5600 right, The Ion is the same.

It really matters who gets the better launch because those cars are so closely matched, Hey if you want 5 hp to the ground 15 to crank, buy a grounding kit, there not that much. like 30 or 40 bucks. Some are like 150 but those are like HKS made. Also if you have a system in your car buy a voltage regulator, It improves take off and torque in mid range rpm.

  • RSX Type S: 200hp and a 14.6 second 1/4 mile.

    ION Redline/Cobalt SS: 205hp and a 14.5 second 1/4 mile.

    I'd say it's a drivers race, but I've seen as low as a 14.2 from a STOCK ION Redline AT SEA LEVEL. The fastest STOCK RSX Type S I've seen is 14.4. They both clocked about .260 lights +/- a few hundredths each.

  • how do you like the kits from intense?  Did you use hp tuners for tuning or did intense do it for you? I personally went with the stage 2 but might get a smaller pulley in the future.

  • I like it. Intense did the tune. alot of people don't trust the intense tune but it worked out for me. Not every car reacts the same to the same parts.

  • ION Redline: 4.04 Final drive ratio.

    Cobalt SS: 4.05 Final drive Ratio.

    I've raced my ION(when it was stock) against stock SS's and it's pretty much a driver's race. I'd say the ION missed a gear.

    ZZPerformance: Stage kits 1-4

    INTENSE-Racing: Stage kits 1-5

    GM Performance: Stage kits 1-3

  • Ya the Stg3 is the highest that you can get.

  • They're not talking about the same company. GM Performance Parts makes a Stage I: new pulley hub, with 3" pulley and belt (as I recall); Stage II: 42.5 lp/hr injectors, 3" pulley with hub, smaller belt and 7100 rev limit (I have a GMPP Stage II); Stage III: all of Stage II plus tune that allows for up to a 75 shot of nitrous, a dual pass intercooler end plate and a void of the warranty.

  • Intense Racing makes kits that range from Stage I through Stage V. I'm not familiar with what each kit has, as I'm not a fan of their tunes.

    stock for stock the IRL is equal, except ion rl's have 17's, (advantange) and are lighter.
