Those ATM machines are installed by a third party company that supplies convenience stores who make a percentage on the transaction fee. You just rip off the individual franchisee. It makes business sense to have them since the store gets charged for the customer making a purchase with a card, hence most stores having a minimum dollar value before you can use a card in addition to the ATM machines they have installed.

That good Samaritan should've walked away as she may have become a suspect. Secondly, the 'hacker' simply logged into the machine's software using a default password programmed into it and changed the settings, he didn't put it back afterwards though which was very foolish again. This was not a professional, but usual theft, that's why he actually got caught.

So he either serviced those machines, or found the code from someone that did. It wouldn't be hard to look at employee records to see who had serviced that machine in the past year.

that secret code they are referring too, has to be something that only people who service those machines can get.
So he either serviced those machines, or found the code from someone that did. It wouldn't be hard to look at employee records to see who had serviced that machine in the past year.

hey maybe that is the case as long as the machines are the same model #. I wonder if they did catch the guy. Maybe I'm a bad detective but I would think it would not be that hard to find him with all the video and then finding out who has serviced that machine.. I dunno. maybe that is too simplistic of a solution on my part

@jonatbaylor That's what I was thinking as well. They could see his car parked at the pump, couldn't they get the license plate number and run that?? Or run his image and see if he has a record or something?? With all the video and eyewitnesses, it shouldn't be THAT hard to track him down.

@ModTUT0rIals Someone doesn't know about ATM cash limits (you can usually only take $250 to $500 out at once depending on your bank's policies)... Or the fact that the machine checks the available balance before giving you money (if the guy had $500,000 in the bank he wouldn't be doing this in the first place)... or the fact that those machines don't hold 1M... Probably more like $50,000 at most.
