@lotrfan387 There's an excellent app for the iPhone on the iTunes app store called "Elvenspeak". This song is written in Quenya, which is a more developed language to Sindarin and in my opinion, far more fascinating. I learnt almost the entire language which on holiday in Portugal, and was probably the most productive week of my life :P
@lotrfan387 thats strange, you can write words you dont know the meaning to? Or do you know their meanings but are unable to pronounce them? If you cannot pronounce words in Tengwar, id suggest gettting either a copy of the silmarillion, that should have pronounciations for different letter groupings. Im also pretty sure there is a book of the tolkenite languages, which have phrases, meanings, and phonetics.
@dejanrak I believe this is Galadriel's song to Elbaereth... a song of reverance and a finaly goodbye to the lands of Middle-Earth forever. "Namarie" means "Farewell"
@Doffz0r If you Google search 'Ardalambion' and click the first link you can find a course in Quenya, the version of Elvish in this piece. Also, the CouncilOfElrond website has a workbook in Quenya and one in Sindarin.
@Doffz0r Quenya is often called 'High-Elvish'. It is spoken by the elves of Lothlorien. It is closer to the language of the Elves in Valinor than its sister, Sindarin. Sindarin is the more conversational language, used by those in the Grey Havens and in Imaldris. (A variant of Sindarin is used by the Elves of Mirkwood.)
In the 'real' world, Tolkien put more effort into Quenya than into Sindarin. There is more published material in Quenya, and it's easier to study. That is the one I chose.
@Doffz0r I've studied off and on for about two years now. Given that I haven't studied in any depth for at least three month, I probably couldn't do much in conversation. I plan to restart my studies as soon as my schedule allows.
@estelio16 no it is certaily not spoken by the elves of lothlorien. the elves or lothlorien except for thier queen are silvan elves. and they speak thier own silvan dialect of sindarin.
:: Exquisitely beautiful. A song of condolence, reassurance, hope, beauty, & the future splendours to come. Thank you, Stasica, for uploading this gem. Nai eleni siluvar antalyannar ~ (•8-D
It does. Tolkien's stories actually aroused from his languages. They were of philological interest. Quenya, his most complete language is a perfect blend of Finnish/Estonian, Old Norse, Old English and some other influences from other Germanic and Latin languages, like Italian when it comes to rhythm.
Phonologically it resembles Finnish greatly, and grammatically Old Norse more. The noun "-r" ending is present.
