Me again Joe, the mistakes I talked about were not removing pot from heat while pouring extract. Then the aeration of the wort,I did stir it while cooling it, i also poured it in the carboy before cooling in the pot. So I had 5 gallons to cool,Took forever haha. My fermentation never was too spectacular but did produce foam an 1" or 2" into the blow off tube,1 day is all that lasted and just slow bubbles remain going on day 6 color is like Carmel not the black wort I put in..Will that change?
Great series Joe, I'm new to the whole home brewing thing but I recently brewed an oatmeal stout and currently waiting to rack it this Saturday. There are a few things my friend and so called teacher failed to tell me that I found here and I cross my fingers my brew eludes the mistakes... But after watching I won't do it again. Once again salud and keep up the good videos!
@snksnk68 Thank you very much! I always learn new things with each new batch--so as long as you continue learning, there will never be a failed batch. :-) Cheers!
@litosk84fun Dark brown bottles are best. You don't ferment in the bottles--you do that in the fermeting bucket or similar equipment. Store your bottles in a dark, cool place to ensure they last a good long while.
@eeitelgeorge That was actually my friend and I! :-) That was a song we recorded for another friends wedding--it was a song we sang to the recording of for the best man's toast. :-D I hope you liked it!
Cool, I'm glad I found this video. There were some things I wasn't sure of if it was okay to put the caps on while it's still wet with a sanitizer, but I've seen that on the instructional DVD as well.
Also, that's smart of you to fill up the bottles on the door of the dish washer. I made such a mess by doing it on the kitchen floor.
Awesome video man. Next beer I'm gonna brew is a honey porter so it's good seeing another dark beer video!
Thanks man--dark beers are my favorite by far--so "Cheers!" :-) Yeah--the sanitizer poses no problem going on wet, esp. as it is so diluted, it's not harmful at all. Using the dishwasher is definitely the way to go if you have one--talk about saving time and floor cleaner. :-) OH--btw, I just thought I should give you a shout out, as I am an ex tuba player too! I also write my own music and LOVE beer. Good to have a fellow low brass friend here on YT. Cheers!
I am a pocket t-shirt guy for that same reason. To listen to my iphone. I have found it's the easiest way to carry and listen to my iphone is in a convenient pocket like that.
Love watching homebrew video's like yours bro thanks!!!
Hrmmm... Well, I guess it would depend on a couple of things. I have always went with the dry yeast because of its ease and relatively guaranteed results. Some folks prefer the liquid strains, because their taste remains more accurate from batch to batch. So--if you live pretty far from Minnesota (where Midwest is) I would recommend getting the base kit with dry yeast, and if you want to use a liquid strain you could pick one up at your local home brew supply.
If you got a liquid yeast from Midwest, I would recommend getting their "cold pack" shipping option for an extra buck--that way you can ensure the yeast don't get too warm and go bad before you can get them into your fridge. There is also some talk about how the basic pack of Munton's isn't the best suited for extract brews, such as with the Midwest kit. So, you might get better attenuation from a liquid strain. I'm not 100% sure of that, because I haven't tried it myself.
use a short length of the vinyl tubeing about an inch long and put your bottling wand on that and put it on the bottling bucket to avoid all that tubing. works good for me
Great idea! I think the Cooper's homebrew kits have somewhat of a similar bottling method--at least from what I've seen in some other YouTube vids. Thanks for the idea!
Thanks for the compliment, Rod! If you're planning on getting one of the Midwest kits, you're going to be in for a treat. I've been drinking the Irish Stout I brewed, and it is getting incredibly good with a bit of age. When I did this video, I had about half a bottle left of the oatmeal stout--so naturally I drank it, and it was phenominal warm and un-carbonated! So--this one is going to be awesome I think. Cheers!
Nah--it should be just fine. The iodophor is a diluted iodine sanitizer--if a drop or two gets into the beer, it shouldn't affect it at all. The iodine solution is diluted enough so that it's effective with a prolonged contact time. There should also be enough yeast left suspended in the brew to more than overpower the sanitizer.
ohh, thanks again.

@snksnk68 It will likely stay the same or lighten up a bit. The malt extract is always darker than the finished beer.

Will the Iodophore drip from the bottle cap into the bottle and kill the yeast and prevent head? Or is it no rinse.. can't remember...
