The heat is a byproduct, not the purpose of the weapon.
Rail guns fire rounds along a elctromagnetic path. The resultant shot is faster than conventional bullets, which incidentally increases the heat through friction as it rips through the air at 3.5x the speed of a round from, say, an AR-15.
Your mates wrong, it fires a round about like a tank round, cept a tank round has its own propulsion like a bullet, this launches one more like a slingshot. The U.S. Navy test fired it a few months ago, the idea is to have a main gun on a ship that fires further and harder than a standard round and the rounds them selves have no "gunpowder" they take up half ths space on the ship and you dont have to worry about your ammo blowing up in case of a fire or something.

there are alot of games where there is a rail gun, it is a gun that super heats its bullets so that it rips through somebody more efficently

I luv rail gun I think its even better than M82. Never tried using M82 against a Gecko, though.

actually an m82 an kill a gekko with one shot to the head, only difference is that you don't have to charge it, so its more efficient
