  • Simply the best!

  • Everyone has their own way of dealing with "those cruel five bars" and they rarely adhere to what Beethoven wrote, especially nowadays - and how could they? Surely in the standard repertory only Casta Diva is more difficult. I admit i love this singer at any stage of her career and the only person Flagstad compares unfavourably to is her younger self

  • Even though that last note was note entirely in tune it was still one heck of a note and at the age of 55!

  • I have the live recording from August 5, 1950 - Salzburg

    Furtwängler - Flagstad - Schwarzkopf - Patzak - Dermota - Schöffler - Greindl - Braun

Yes, Flagstad had problems reaching and holding the high note at the end of the aria BUT it is a live recording and as we know - the human voice cannot be tuned.

It is still my most favorite and most beloved "Fidelio" recoding ever.

  • Awesome singer! Her top notes are not good though

  • One of the greatest Opera singers of the 20th century!

She had the most wonderful voice of sheer beauty and consistency of line and tone.

  • I do prefer a drammatic soprano in this role. This is just perfect. Along with Soderstrom and Varnay. I wish somebody would post a live performance with Jurinac and Klemperer, 1962?

  • Sounds amazing!

    She colours darker...
