wait, you have all the moves in this version since the beginning of the game? I remember you have to earn certain amount of points by punching or kicking (punching yields more points) to get new moves. I used to love the grab/knee/throw move.
I remember buying a Sega just for this version. Follows the arcade version much more accurately than NES. The NES seems like a completely different game than the arcade version. I like it too , but the SMS version was as close as you could get back then to the arcade.
I have a rom of this game for NES, and Atari 7800. The Atari 7800 game is pure shit. I will have to dowload this version if I install a sega master system emulator on my Wii.
this game is known to be one of the worst versions of DD1. Sad they failed on this one, because sega master system was a good console and had good games. Nes version was way better.
The NES version is completely different than this version. Still good in my opinion, but I prefer the arcade version which this is it. Also the NES version you had to level up so to speak to be able to do the elbow and head butting etc. So in stead of just kicking butt right away you had to punch repeatedly hoping not to get counter attacked to gain as many EXP as possible. It was instant though, you just kept getting EXP until you leveled all the way. Not any stronger just more moves.
Ive always liked this version of DD, of course the Arcade version is ultimate, and i play it on mame a lot, but for home conversions, this is the best one.
@EpicWinOrFail It had good Graphics. But it was not utilized to it's full potential. Some games looked awesome. Especially the 3D games & other games like R-Type.
@wingnut4427 Uh? What? You're kidding right. The SMS ALWAYS looked better than the NES, even when developers made crappy ports. The higher color pallete and resolution always beat out the NES. Some games like Contra Force look good but even they can't touch the SMS graphically. Whatever way you cut the pie the SMS was TECHNICALLY superior.
@TheSegaAges it was superior but it did not utilize it's strong assets. It even failed with it's 3d capability's. Sega did not have the same marketing the NES had until the Genesis. The problem was extremely poor reviews in many popular publications of the time. Despite it's graphic superiority it suffered from extremely poor programming. Don't get me wrong ! I love SEGA & I'm not a big fan boy of any particular company. But sega screwed up royally on this system in many ways.
But just so you know. The Dreamcast was My favorite system of all time ! Even over the PS2 & 3. It had a charm about it that could not be matched by Sony, Nintendo, or Microsoft. Not sure what it is.. But I certainly wish that Sega would get back into the console business with a Dreamcast 2 .. but one can only dream :(
@wingnut4427 The reason ports on the Master System weren't particularly hunky dory is because Nintendo had a stranglehold on all of the developers. The issue is even with the Master System's low software attract rate when you compare the amount of total shit on the NES to the Master Systems you'll see the ratio of poor to good games is very similar.
Also, there was nothing wrong with the 3D, developers just didnt support it.
I'm not being dismissive but don't spread misinformation about the SMS
@TheSegaAges it's not disinfo. & you are correct about nintendo's stranglehold. Sega could have done far FAR more to move more units. I could go on & on about Sega's major blunders with the SMS but they did manage to clear out their inventory in a big way with the SMS expansion for the genesis. That was a brilliant move & it pulled sega's head out of the water. Sega screwed up however with the Sega CD, 32X, & the Saturn.. If they would have skipped the CD & 32X & jumped strait to saturn. well .
... need I say more ? That is 90% of the reason Sega's Dreamcast failed. Because the players we're gun shy of sega after their last 3 major blunders. AGAIN !! I love Sega.. but their marketing strategies SUCKED !!
@wingnut4427 It is disinformation to say that the majority of games on the Master System were poor quality when most people prefer playing the Master System version of games you can get on the NES. There were lots of high quality NES games but the shit games outnumber the good ones. It's was a similar situation with the SMS, of course it had bad games but probably in the same ratios as the NES.
I agree with you about the 32x though. It wasn't necessary. The CD was popular though, devs loved it.
@ ihavevolleyballs what do you expect for an 8-bit system it looks shit loads better then the nes version the music may not be as good but its still a really good game

how come the music is so enhanced? I remember the sega version was no way close to this quality? But then again I could be wrong, nontheless great music and game!...
The game is being played with its FM music support enabled. You can only do that if you play it either in a Japanese Master System model, in a Japanese Mark III with the FM module attached, or through any emulator supporting the FM music.
I was born in 88 ( so not too old) I grew up with double dragon and these "retro games" ( yhup sir, that's my generation too ;-) ) and...I've been playing these game til a couple years ago when, somehow, everything speeded up. I mean these games aren't retro for me. My last system is a N64. I mean, wts is going on ??? We had to wait so long for the N64 and we haven't finished its games that 2 other systems already came out ? wth !!!
(continued from the last post to FIXTREME)...had nearly cost Sony its share of the video game market and it is only now that Sony has seen the error of its ways after firing two company heads of its parent company. You have to know your audience and if you make things that are too difficult for video game developers and manufacturers to make, then your video game systems will have few, if any, games, they will, more than likely, be of questionable value, and the system will become a failure.
Ok Firstly, I didnt see a single post on this thing from me so idk what you reference, and secondly I dont know how the hell I got a message saying you responded to my comment....I NEVER get those. I wanna know what I said, followed by what the hell your talking about.
Damn, I am sorry, FIXTREME. I had meant to say that I was talking to Nintendavin instead of you but, for some reason, I had your username on the brain. I really need a social life.
Not for nothing, but if you really believed this, maybe you should give Chinese video games a try. They look like Wii, but the technology is 1993 calling.
Point is, unless its a Neo Geo CD, only DK Country style fake 3d will be the only way you can play 2d anymore. But hey at least its nice
What I mean, FIXTREME, is this, sir. I remember when the PlayStation 3 came out and there was all of this hullabaloo about how difficult that it was to develop video games for that system and how Sony had kept refusing to adhere to the smart policies that had made its PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 (which, ironically, is STILL beating not only the PlayStation 3 but also the Wii AND the XBox 360 in sales) such huge success stories. Their stupidity and refusal to accomodate people...
Well, any system is capable of anything if you get the right people to develop the game right, Nintendavin. It is nice that the controls are more fluid than they are in the NES version AND that you can fight three thugs as opposed to two thugs, but then again, this particular port is more geared towards the arcade version of the sound. As for why Jeff is not in the NES port of Double Dragon, well, 4:38 to 4:40 in this video shows his epic failure right there. What a dumbass!
Yeah, I heard in Japan that some Master Systems were released with an FM sound chip or something and this was one of the games that was compatible with it.
Yeah the Sega Mark III you had to buy the add-on. But the actual Japan Master System had it built in. It made the game sound a lot better. Check out Golvellius's FM sound, it is also very good.
Actually... I see some flaws with your little speech there.
A system isn't capable of absolutely anything. You can have Bill Gates developing games for the Master System, but he's only limited to what the system is actually capable of doing.
However, you're right in one way. With good programmers, you get a good game. When people say a game is bad due to the system it's on, it's actually the programmers who are at fault.
And boy, Double Dragon games are FULL to the brim with glitches!
Then there must have been more than one arcade version because this is different than the one I played. Port means to switch ports. This game wasn't unplugged from one interface then plugged into another. They didn't simply change or emulate the input program, they rebuilt it, but it's composure is identical.
I don't remember the music sounding like this. Is this played on the early Japanese mark3 that had an FM chip similar to megadrive/genesis? It sounds like a megadrive almost. Master system I remeber was all beeps and white noise. Haha, I just remembered on shadow dancer, and the dog barking at the start. That was hilarious. "WOOF! WOOF!" XD
I was born in 1990, but I grew up playing '80s games. Double Dragon is one of the greatest games I have ever played and I played numerous ports. This one is a pretty good port of the game.
That's very true. Either Sega (developer of this port) or Acclaim (western publisher of DD2) should have done it. In a hypothetical case, DD2 should have ported from the NES though, instead of replicating the arcade game like it was done with DD1, because in the case of DD2, the NES game is way superior to the arcade game.
Thank you my Case is Rested I've been saying that NES Version Sucks; the Master System Version Rules...I never played this still, but I already like it.
This looks like it's on an emulator. On the master system there was huge flickering, but a pc today could handle this no problem. But the sound is better.
@youtubasoarus As much as I would have hated to admit it back then, I have to agree. As a gamer, it's a pity that the Master System didn't have a chance in North America.
@youtubasoarus It's not just you. Sega had better hardware than Nintendo did at the time, and it showed in their home consoles. Unfortunately, Mario was owned by Nintendo and Sonic wasn't born yet. Otherwise, SNES vs Genesis would have been this first. (Man, the music is sooooo much better!!)
@youtubasoarus master system was superior in every department, just didnt sell as well due to nintendo forcing 3rd party devs not to release games for it if they had been already released on nes
Yup, 80's and early 90's got gaming right. Now it's all about the graphical presentation and not what it should be about the game play. When new consoles would come out back in the day it was always pushed that the games were going to be bigger and better and if graphics were mentioned it was only to emphasize the most important thing gameplay. Now all we hear about is how great the new games look. "True realism like we've never seen before", which isn't really that important.
100% Agreed, realism has killed gameplay. Its the obsession with graphics over gameplay that has put me off this generation of game consoles and made me focus on retrogaming.Nowadays everything "Must" to be in 3D.A perfect example is Castlevania. The 2D NES,SNES,Genesis,Gameboy & DS versions are great playable classics. The 3D versions for N64 & Playstation2 were FAILURES at best.A clear cut example that not everything can or should be just about realism/graphic output.
I think its a shame that the older consoles had to be phased out at all. I dont see why game manufacturers dont continue to release new games for the older systems aswell as the new ones. Even if they were in smaller numbers.
What if everyone became a beggar, FIXTREME? The bottom line is that nicholastaylor is right and this whole planned obsolence thing (which is why things like video games get better and better graphics) will bite us in the ass if we keep abandoning the older systems for the new people on the block because the less people that there are that know how to make video games, the less likely that the industry will survive, so give some respect to the older systems and make new games for them, please.
I agree. Realism ruins the fantasy of games. One problem with video games now, I think, is they are trying too much to be like the movies, which doesn't work. A game is not a movie just like a book is not a movie, and so on. Inventive gameplay trumps graphics any day. It's certainly one of the reasons Tetris has remained popular all these years.
I disagree, this music sounds more like the arcade. In fact, this is a more faithful version of DD than the NES was. And this one is two players. Also, in the NES version, there were only two characters that could be displayed per screen, and it had to be the same character. In this version, three characters could be displayed and they didn't have to be the same.
I had the nes version and used to wish I had the sega master system version. Everytime I'd see the commercial for this game on the sega I used to get so green with envy, until double dragon 2 and 3 came out, both of those games owned.
It sounds different cuz he might be using an emu with the FM sound chip enabled or he has a japanese SMS with the FM chip. SMS sold in North America didn't have the FM chip, they had the PCM chip.

What a dumbass!
notjustanotherface 2 years ago
Yeah, I heard in Japan that some Master Systems were released with an FM sound chip or something and this was one of the games that was compatible with it.
Nintendavin 2 years ago
@Nintendavin
Yeah the Sega Mark III you had to buy the add-on. But the actual Japan Master System had it built in. It made the game sound a lot better. Check out Golvellius's FM sound, it is also very good.
FedorovAvtomat 2 years ago
Nintendavin 2 years ago
This isn't a port, it's a different build. Even though it's almost identical to Nintendo's build it's obviously different.
PopcornCoolie 2 years ago
This is a port from the arcade. One of the better ports.
TheSegaAge 2 years ago
Then there must have been more than one arcade version because this is different than the one I played. Port means to switch ports. This game wasn't unplugged from one interface then plugged into another. They didn't simply change or emulate the input program, they rebuilt it, but it's composure is identical.
PopcornCoolie 2 years ago
I don't remember the music sounding like this. Is this played on the early Japanese mark3 that had an FM chip similar to megadrive/genesis? It sounds like a megadrive almost. Master system I remeber was all beeps and white noise. Haha, I just remembered on shadow dancer, and the dog barking at the start. That was hilarious. "WOOF! WOOF!" XD

I was born in 1990, but I grew up playing '80s games. Double Dragon is one of the greatest games I have ever played and I played numerous ports. This one is a pretty good port of the game.
YamiGekusu 2 years ago
I love the music from stage 2.Classic 80s game bgm.I'll always remember it.
megacide84 2 years ago
Its too bad they never made a port of Double Dragon II for Master System.
megacide84 2 years ago
That's very true. Either Sega (developer of this port) or Acclaim (western publisher of DD2) should have done it. In a hypothetical case, DD2 should have ported from the NES though, instead of replicating the arcade game like it was done with DD1, because in the case of DD2, the NES game is way superior to the arcade game.
WeskerSega 2 years ago
WAYYYYY better than the nes version. Feels like the arcade.
Luigi84289 2 years ago
indeed i remember being disappointed when i got my nes version and it wasnt 2p
(except for the Street fighter style levels)
so i got a Master System so a friend and I could kick some ass at home like we did in the arcades.
The nes version was cool in how it had different levels than the arcade, but the Master system version just better because of Co-Op.
Double Dragon needs a modern remake.
SmokePropaganda 2 years ago
I used to play this game back in the 80's,
I could beat it when I was 5, but i cant now.
the midi conversion sucks. sounds much better on the master system.

I thought it was just me, but this version is way better on the Master System than the NES. I have the NES version, it's not this good. Wow.

Thank you my Case is Rested I've been saying that NES Version Sucks; the Master System Version Rules...I never played this still, but I already like it.
TruDru1978 2 years ago
This looks like it's on an emulator. On the master system there was huge flickering, but a pc today could handle this no problem. But the sound is better.
Christian3522 2 years ago
@youtubasoarus As much as I would have hated to admit it back then, I have to agree. As a gamer, it's a pity that the Master System didn't have a chance in North America.
ChicoEdge 1 year ago
@youtubasoarus yes the sms version was way better then the nes,in the nes version you had to earn all your special moves!

Luigi84289 2 years ago
80s were a golden age for gaming.I feel sorry for the new generation of gamers out there. They don't what they missed.
megacide84 2 years ago
Yup, 80's and early 90's got gaming right. Now it's all about the graphical presentation and not what it should be about the game play. When new consoles would come out back in the day it was always pushed that the games were going to be bigger and better and if graphics were mentioned it was only to emphasize the most important thing gameplay. Now all we hear about is how great the new games look. "True realism like we've never seen before", which isn't really that important.
Luigi84289 2 years ago 7
100% Agreed, realism has killed gameplay. Its the obsession with graphics over gameplay that has put me off this generation of game consoles and made me focus on retrogaming.Nowadays everything "Must" to be in 3D.A perfect example is Castlevania. The 2D NES,SNES,Genesis,Gameboy & DS versions are great playable classics. The 3D versions for N64 & Playstation2 were FAILURES at best.A clear cut example that not everything can or should be just about realism/graphic output.
megacide84 2 years ago
I think its a shame that the older consoles had to be phased out at all. I dont see why game manufacturers dont continue to release new games for the older systems aswell as the new ones. Even if they were in smaller numbers.
nicholasthetaylor 2 years ago
Technically they ARE continued, but in China. But hey, beggars cant choose right?
FIXTREME 2 years ago
What if everyone became a beggar, FIXTREME? The bottom line is that nicholastaylor is right and this whole planned obsolence thing (which is why things like video games get better and better graphics) will bite us in the ass if we keep abandoning the older systems for the new people on the block because the less people that there are that know how to make video games, the less likely that the industry will survive, so give some respect to the older systems and make new games for them, please.
notjustanotherface 2 years ago

There was an FM chip that you could add onto the Japanese one that made it sound more like a Sega Genesis.

yes it has better soundchip quality actually

Yes but i love all 2 systems they rule the 8bit time
and every system had cool games
blackdeath1000 2 years ago 2
I disagree, this music sounds more like the arcade. In fact, this is a more faithful version of DD than the NES was. And this one is two players. Also, in the NES version, there were only two characters that could be displayed per screen, and it had to be the same character. In this version, three characters could be displayed and they didn't have to be the same.
