  • How the hell did he get to Hawaii? It's the world championchips! People gotta qualify for it!

  • I read his blog which said he finished the IM Florida the next year in 16:39, which is where jdmiller's reply ocmes from. But, technically speaking, the title is wrong. He didn't finish Kona. To finish, you have to finish in time, otherwise you just ran the course. There's a difference.

  • Matt,is an ironman plus a man Of steel. Thumbs way up For The big dudes! He'd definetly Kick My ass.

  • @racinnj...don't think, just do! You can do it. This video was awesome. Matt, in my book you're an Iron Man and a wonderful inspiration. Thanks for be so honest and making yourself vulnerable. Brought tears to this grown mans eyes. Once you get a taste of it, you can't stop.

  • I don't know what to say to Matt but I'm extremely proud of him. Congrats brother, welcome to the pack.

  • He might be overweight but that's impressive

    Good job Matt

  • Comment removed

  • The haters here are fucking losers, who could NEVER finish a fight like the IRONMAN! NEVER! So just shut the fuck up!

  • Fuck Ironman, this guy is made of steel. Mass respect to you bro.

  • Truly an inspiration! You finished.

  • this is so inspirational, shout out to you matt

  • for all the people whos saying he is a big ass and dont have respect for triathlon... let me just say... that he mande a race the most harder race on planet earth and he finished it! would you finish?!

  • screw the time limit, if this guy is not an ironman then no one is BRAVO

  • absolute inspiration

  • how the hell did he get into Hawaii with this time for his first ironman? Usually you gotta qualify. Well done though

  • Good for you, Matt.

  • Matt is my hero! Watching this video made me one of he's biggest fans! :)

  • @beverett99

I read your comment before it was deleted. Anways, I went from zero to Ironman with 10 months of training. I'm 20 years old and finished the one in France in 13 hours, 50 minutes and 42 seconds.

For him to even participate requires more gut than that of 90% of the athletes I have met. And with him getting so far, so close to finish, I have nothing to do but applaud him. Nor should ANYONE ever do anything else.

My biggest Respect Matt - an Ironman finisher.

  • I find it hard to believe that someone would post negative comments about Matt Hoover - but people do. He is an inspiration even to me, an athlete in top shape at 41.

  • Who the fuck cares if he finished?

He is more of an ironman than 90% of the athletes in an Ironman race...

  • matt hoover you are my role model x

  • It is really motivating, no question. Matt has my deep respect for his performance and that he has not given up. The message that he brings across is great.

But how the hell he got a slot?

I would also like to start in Hawaii, so if you have one slot left, I'm ready!

  • Being an athlete who has missed the bike cut off at an Ironman by 90 seconds, I understand his emotion. Matt...you inspired me when you were on the show (I have lost 190 lbs) and you inspired me with this incredible race. No..you're not an "Ironman" because you missed the cut off...but like my friends tell me...You are an IronHeart Soul showing the world what guts and determination can do. Well done my friend...well done!!

  • What an Amazing Inspirational Story. Well Done. Thats given me a more Positive Attitude to running The Marathon!!!

  • Man you are Iron, screw the cutoff YOU ARE IRON, Serious Props

  • You are an IRONMAN, nothing else, you win

  • i am thinking about doing a ironman!

  • This brings a tear to my eyes. Massive respect for this guy!

  • i was watching a ironman once and people who are uber fit were not finishing so never ever look down on any body

  • It is truly an emotion invoking and awe inspiring thing that you never gave up no matter what. I think that is the true spirit of what it means to be an IronMan.

  • Congratulations Matt! That is very brave! It takes a strong heart and mind to do what you have done.

  • Truly inspiring!!

  • You are a true inspration Matt!!! Great job!

  • wow!!!!! :) i wanna do an ironman tri

  • an inspiration

  • I can think of something harder... A TRIPLE IRONMAN! look it up

  • @zimdooga or a decaironman perhaps?

  • Hey Matt. Great job. Dont listen to the negative people on here. Just a bunch of JO's. Hope your training is going well

  • Well done buddy. Much respect to you!

  • This is very awe inspiring. This almost made me tear up, because of what he had accomplished. It doesn't matter if he didn't finish, he never quit, that's all that matters. I commend him for this accomplishment. Good job!

  • Plenty of respect to you!

  • What a guy, such a touching story.

  • Way to Go Matt I am 220kg & training to do half Ironman in December thanks for the inspiration dude Thanks heaps

  • This man had an extraordinary accomplishment. There should be no cut-off time, though. Take as long as you require. Why would this mean anything to the competition officials? What's the point of diminishing someone's accomplishment, when anyone who finishes achieves a tremendous goal?

  • @cosg9531 Sorry dude you need a cut off time for a reason, to make it tougher else people will take 24hrs wouldn't they! You can't make Ironman too easy, which is why its called Ironman.

  • oh man!! so inspirational!

  • Matt Hoover came to my school today. And he said he tried the Iron Man competition again. He said he finished it the second time with like 20 minutes to spare.

  • AWESOME, This show saved my life. Matt is a awesome

  • Matt you are a true Iron Man. Thanks for the amazing inspiration. I just finished the YMCA Lazy Man Iron man challenge and it was fun. hope to catch up with you and get in there and do it. Your the Man!!!

  • Now this is inspirational!!!

  • To iamironman2004...you've obviously never heard of Matt Lieto, Chris Lieto's little brother. Matt is a pro triathlete who used to be called "Big Matt" & "Fat Matt". Watching his brother at Kona inspired Matt L. to get off the couch and try: his story inspires me to this day. The people I know that have done Kona atest to the fact that it may be the most difficult course of all ironmans. That Matt Hoover didn't make the cut-off is sad, I hope he tries again perhaps at a course like Florida.

  • Pure inspiration!

  • Does that mean he's not technically an Ironman cos he missed the cutoff point, even though he completed it??

  • Absolutely inspiring...brought tears to my eyes. Training for my 1st Ironman this year.

  • matt - If you are on here and want another crack if you havent already - come to Ironman Wales! drop me a line from the website!

    matt

    Race director

  • If he can do it, I can too. Thank you for the inspiration.

  • I'm in tears at the gym after watching this... Thank god know ones n here its 145 am

    Congrats to this man!!!!!

  • 140.6 is a serious accomplishment. Hat's off to you Matt.

  • I love you Matt, you gave me hope.

  • Awesome awesome story!!!!

  • Well done Matt!! You Rock!!!!!!

  • How impressive is this guy?!?! WOW!

  • Never quit!

  • GREAT VIDEO ! thanks for sharing , YEP It's me

  • I don't know that I'd call 16:39 barely finishing. Yeah, maybe he's bigger but who cares? The achievement is amazing. I don't get why there are so many negative posts. Saying that he disrespected the sport of triathlon is ignorant. The guy never gave up and kept going. To me, that's paying the sport a whole lot of respect.

  • He finished (barely) Ironman Florida this year, but if you look at his race photos at action sports international, you'll see that he's as big as ever. He's gotta be pushing close to 300lbs now. Definitely bigger than he was in Kona.

  • My question is how did he qualify when IM say they don't give special exemptions; biggest loser is on Nbc and so is IM, hmmmm

  • @l3phillips Yeah thats what I would like to know, don't you have to qualify 1st by doing other ironman events or something, but good on him for doing it anyway! Im currently training for an Ironman as well and have never done one before! Should be fun!

  • Never done a Triathlon, but going to compete in at least one Olympic distance tri this summer. Matt is inspiring and for anyone skinny, fat or whatever shape you are in is a great accomplishment. I hope for him he is able to go back and compete in the Kona Ironman and finish within the cutoff time. If he is anything like me, at the time it is great you finish at all but knowing you didnt beat the cutoff would eat away at me untill I beat it at the course that beat me

  • I respect that man with a passion.

  • I can't lie I teared up watching this...good job

  • I respect this guy for losing the weight an tryin but he was no where near as in shape as he should have been for this

  • @iamanironman2004 lol , you remind me on people who make misspell jokes on internet

  • @luckydirtbag See, you're getting better at what you practice too.

  • FYI he finished Ironman Flordia 2010, so he's earned the title. Congrats to you, Matt!

  • While all of you haters were wasting your life bashing Matt on You Tube all year, he continued to train hard. Looks like you all got better at what you do. Personally, I think you should hang onto whatever real or imagined athletic accomplishments you think you've had, because it looks like that may have been your high point. Matt continues to inspire millions.

Matt, I am moved to tears again, at your second Ironman finish. Congratulations on making your time goal last night.

  • On Nov 6th, 2010 Matt Hoover finished Ironman Florida with a time of 16:39:04. Now he is officially an, "Ironman"...

    Way to go Matt!!

  • this video is amazing, i give 100 percent respect to this guy for doing this. i wanna do this sooo bad and im only 16

  • this video is truely amazing and inspiring! im only 16 years old and im thinking about doing this one day. it seems really challenging but fun and accomplishing! ive been running cross country and biking everyday, but i need to do the swimming. i just dont know how im going to do the ironman if i cant train 5 - 6 hours everyday because of school

  • @GstMonster1 you can do anything you set your mind to. Most of us don't get to train 5-6 hours a day. We work in 1-3 hours in between jobs, kids, housekeeping, spouses, school and every other random thing that comes along. Enjoy the whole amazing ride, and feel like a rockstar no matter what.

  • @trilikeagirl40 yeah i know, and dangg yall must having amazing genetics for this stuff haha and yeah anything i hard like this everyone is a winner!

  • You guys should be ashamed of yourselves. If you did the ironman you would know what it is really about. (finding what "you, yourself" can do and push the limits) This is an individual sport so the only person you should care about is yourself.

I truly believe this man is here to inspire people. He finished, he never gave up, and in my book he is a true ironman.

  • Good job

  • he was a former wressler so he has training before

  • why is everyone hating on Matt? geez, a man who used to be excessively obese put in a lot of work to run an ironman. Matt never claimed he finished anyway... he said he missed it by 3 minutes. I'd like to see half of you guys criticizing him finish an ironman. And yes i know he is overweight, but he obviously trained very hard. Some people can never really loose tons of weight and become skinny because of their build. I bet he'll be back next year and do it.

  • @DouchayTouchay I agree with you. If this wasn't Kona I might feel different. However, there are many triathletes that would love to race Kona but will never qualify or win the lotto system. If it was another IM that was more open to the public, then he did his best. However, because it was Kona, he totally disrespected the sport. Think about how out of shape he was when he started training and how in shape he was at race day. Lack of honor for people trying to sacrifice allot to do Kona..

  • I am an Ironman, having crossed the line in under 12 hours. I'm also a big guy and have a pretty good idea about some of the other Ironmen on here who are so agitated that people are calling this guy an Ironman. La De Freakin' Da! So he finished in 17:03, I say he rocked the house, finishing Kona is awesome, whether you're Dave Scott, six time champion, or Matt, from the biggest loser in 17 hours and change. Embrace the spirit of the event, and get over yourself!!

  • Matt...He's the biggest Iron Man there ever was (No pun intended) and he's also my personal inspiration! Plus he's coming to my school so I'm PUMPED!!!!!

  • DRRVCD, AWESOME COMEBACK!! I agree with you 100%. Matt is, in my eyes, an IRONMAN. He covered the 140.6 miles and that's enough for me to give him the credit. I am an ironman myself and it is no disrespect to me at all. Shame on you for un-sportsman like behavior.

  • Haters haters haters. You know, all you people complaining does not change anything. You all just want to gripe and whine and cry and have a bad life. boo hoo. Go see a theripist and tell him how this video is hurting you. Maybe he can help you with this problem. Or just don't watch this.

  • God, why is everyone so bloody arrogant. Look at the facts - fat guy completes ironman course, allbeit 3 mins over. Who cares? He finished it, he must have looked a right plonker on the start line, I wouldn't want to be him and I do triathlons, but he done it. Why dont you get over your multi ironman status and stop being so defensive!!! He isn't a threat to you!

  • some of you are "real" triathletes maybe but you don t have the mind to be one of us

it s you who dishonour our sport matt is a finisher ans of course he was here because he was famous so? what s the matter ?

don t be so racist...............it s because he s fat? are you jealous i m prooud of him he did it and cross teh line

  • @iamanironman2004 - It is obvious that you don't know what you are talking about...and how can anybody be a finisher and not know that there is a lottery eveyr year. Why do you think they have a 17 hour time limit? If the only way to get in is to get in the top 5 of your age group...there would be no need for a 17 hour limit. You lie. You never did an ironman yourself or you would have total respect for Matt, and what he accomplished. Your a poor excuse for a human.

  • @Liendeni I don't see it so here you go. I have finished tri's from sprint to double iron distance. I run 5k to ultra. Have run a 100 mile trail run, two 80 mile runs for charity. I run the national 15k championships annually for charity starting last and sponsors donate for every participant i pass, the last two years i passed 10,000 plus runners. I feel every person has the ability to be active and the body can do more than most ever dream. May you all strive for more physical acitvity.

  • @iamanironman2004 - I think you posting some meaningless true or false stats about yourself really says a lot about your insecurity.

  • ...time is nothing , its what you do with it..

for me you are an ironman !

  • You know what . . . Matt had the integrety to fail! Does anyone remember Dane Patterson??? Matt got in as a celebrity, but he finished with class . . . he did not let the producers manufacture an apparent success. He ran it out . . . and while he came in short . . . he did not quit. No doubt, he's not an Ironman, but still an inspiration!!!

  • iamanironman2004, I have advise for you. Quit your bitching because no one cares what you think. Everyone who started that race gets credit, so shut up. The true finishers did better, big deal.

  • Im an athlete, never thought about doing an ironman since I saw this guy, all my respect to him, thats exactly the point... he didnt make it officialy? who cares? I wont need an oficial paper to say I finished to be proud or to be sure of who I am, like Matt, being an ironman its inside you..

  • True. Stritcly speaking he's not an ironman. You look up his name on the time table and... won't show up as finisher, the cut off time is set for a reason. In any case he acomplished an amazing challenge. This guy has done something I havent so... all my respect. Respecting this guy has nothing to do with whether he made the cut off time or not.

All in all, ana amazing acomplishement for a 237lbs guy. Chapeau.

  • @iamanironman2004 He also should have been penalized by having friends run along with him near the end. But maybe it didn't matter since he obviously wasn't going to finish on time anyway.

  • @iamanironman2004

Kona also has a lottery for 200 (if I remember right) people that didn't get in the other way.

All you have to do is do is complete a qualifying 70.3 race event in the allotted time. And judging by Matt only missing the "finisher time" for the full ironman by 3 minutes, I assume that he should have been able to do a half ironman in the required time.

Of course this is about as much speculation as you saying that he only go in because of his "celebrity" status.

  • @islandsi To qualify for the Ironman World Championships, you need to complete in a qualifying 140.6 (full) or 70.3 (half) race and you need to finish in one of the top spots. There are about 1800 qualifying slots for the world championships each year and these are distributed among several dozen races. Finishing one of these races would certainly not be enough, you need to be one of the top finishers in your age group, at least. Matt did great, but he wouldn't have qualified in another race.

  • YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION, I HOPE TO SEE YOU IN ALL IRONMANS CONGRATULATIONS YPU ARE AN IRONMAN

  • @iamanironman2004 as much as i hate to agree with you, you are right

  • @iamanironman2004 3 minutes off the cut-off at his size isn't a disrespect to people who "finish" the Ironman. He did great. Those other people? They did better, big deal.

  • @iamanironman2004

Still riding on your Ironman accomplishment. Your name is in regards to 2004 and in 2010 you are looking up videos on youtube regarding the same event and whining about a fat guy who pushed his athletically disadvantaged body to the limit, and failed by 3 minutes. Whoopdee do. You sound insecure and sniveling. You probably mention the ironman every chance you can to try and impress people.

  • @DRRVCD No, you got it all wrong. If you missed, you missed. by one second, three minutes, or 12 hours. He is not a finisher. Fact is fact.

  • @DRRVCD at least he did it!!! he probably just feels good about it. even though he didn't finish on time he still finished it

  • Well done! I weigh 20st and have lost 2 stone already and training for an ironman in August this year. Keep it up

  • He may not have finished in the alotted time, but being an Ironman is more than just a finish time. It's a lifestyle,a commitment, and a state of mind. He may not be an official Ironman finisher, but he is an Ironman. " JUST FINISHING IS VICTORY ."

  • Yer i agree, he is defiantly not an ironman.

  • I think it is sad that people on here disrespect the effort of someone who did not give up and continued to fight for the finish line. He might not deserve the screen name "iamanironman" but he did the miles and crossed the finish line. The feeling and motivation of going out there and doing it in the first place, is more important to some people than a title. I think you are watching and commenting on the wrong videos there champ.

  • @graymg1 How is it disrespect to point out that he is not an ironman finisher. I did say it was great that he traveled the 140.6 miles. There are cuttoffs though, not just the ironman but many races around the world. NBC said he was not a finisher. The announcer at Kona did not announce him as a finisher and I bet Matt knows he is not a Ironman finisher. Any of you attacking me, HAVE YOU FINISHED AN IRONMAN. When you do, comment. If not, you don't know the feeling of accomplishing this feat.

  • RESPECT, Matt!!!

Don`t give a damn about the 3.?? minutes, you done it!!!!

You targeted, you were hurtin` and you overcame!!!

You are one of us, .... an IRONMAN.

    best wishes

  • Whoever advised him to use an aero helmet instead of a regular helmet? I have long triathlons, when its hot and you are riding in the back part of the race its better to be cool than "aero"....just my two cents...

  • @iamanironman2004 I suppose you are right. I would not go get an mdot tattoo if I hadn't finished in the allotted time. haha.

  • @iamanironman2004 shut up you idiot. he is an ironman!!! Well done Matt you are amazing.

  • iamironman2004, doesn't it say on the cones on the ironman run course "Don't ever look down on anyone unless you are helping them up." ? He finished, and that is an accomplishment in itself. I am also a triathlete, and anyone that can do an ironman within a few minutes of cut off, is just awe inspiring. Please don't bash other peoples accomplishments. Be happy that he did it and that he TRIed. Modesty, learn it.

  • iamironman2004, doesn't it say on the cones on the ironman run course "Don't ever look down on anyone unless you are helping them up." ? He finished, and that is an accomplishment in itself. I am also a triathlete, and anyone that can do an ironman in any amount of time, is just awe inspiring. Please don't bash other peoples accomplishments. Worry about your own.

  • @iamanironman2004 Okay Cocky.

Sorry Hes not As Good As You

To Be 230 POunds,it is BEyond Amazing TO Do An Ironman In 17hrs 3 mins

  • It's amazing how he came in just under. For something that takes so long to complete, it's not like you're doing a sprint and one guy wins or something. So he was definitely at the fitness level to finish if he was only 3 minutes under. But nevertheless if he had of done this while he was thin it would have been way more successful.

As it stands I think that's so awesome and inspiring. What a great story.

  • WOW!

  • oh my god... if you're matt.. my friend you have insspired me in alot of ways !!! and because of you .. i have made the decision to do my first ironman in 2012.. thank you so much !!!!!

  • @bighondo77 since your so dam great id like to see you train " 2 or 3 months" and then finish the race in 17 hours and 3 min. IF you do that then you have the right to talk. For someone his weight to do what he did is beyond amazing

  • que grande si señor.que tomen nota los futbolistas de lo que es hecharle dos cojones

  • i cried

  • amazing. this guy is amazing.

  • Do you know Matt or his training regimen? How dare you assume he didn't train or "earn" his spot. The spirit of Ironman is about perseverance, not quitting, not losing hope...I suppose u r entitled to say what constitutes honor or "dishonor"? But from your comment u perpetuate the notion that b/c someone is large, overweight, obese, etc., they don't deserve to be treated as a legit athlete and/or even worse as a human being...they only deserve judgment and getting bashed. Shame on you!

  • I am large, smart guy. You can tell from his condition after the bike that he wasn't ready to do the race. And he didn't earn his spot by qualifying for the race. His entry was given to him because of his so-called "celebrity". Lots of big people compete in Ironman races but they take the time to prepare. An Ironman is not something you do on a lark, especially for us clydesdales. It's an event that demands respect or it will defeat you...just like it defeated Matt.

  • dude... its all about dedication, perserverance and the human spirit ... dun tell us saying that he ain't ready .. because everyone knows this guy had put in alot of effort in preparing for such an event. There are those smaller frames people who dun even to get to finish the race.

  • So glad Suzy told me about this video. As I watched the video, a few verses by Apostle Paul came to mind:"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith"(2 Tim 4:7) and "Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training...Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air." (2Cor9:15-26) I know how much u trained and u made me proud and inspired to know u. Congrats on being an ironman finisher!

  • Sweet Job Matt!

  • HE WENT THE DISTANCE MAN! THAT IS ALL THAT IT IS ABOUT! a wonderful feat for anyone to accomplish. He swam the distance, he biked the distance, and he ran the distance. Just 3 min shy of the cut off. HE FINISHED the race!

  • I have to say just one thing: WOW!!!!!!! Matt I love ya man.

  • Great Job Matt!

  • I think Matt Hoover is a total inspiration to everyone! I am totally motivated by his determination. His I Can mentality. His dedication, desire to achieve More importantly, his desire to finish what he started. I know I will get slack for the following comment.

  • Congrats. Matt Hoover! However, I think it's sad that you gained 55 pounds back (I'm guessing most of it was fat tissue) since the Biggest Loser season 2 finale ended. I hope you haven't forgotten about your health and the importance of staying healthy. Sadly, you do look a little overweight now. Hopefully, you'll do some intense calorie burning and lose that excess fat. You kinda act like it's "okay" to be overweight. Stay healthy man! Feel great AND physically look great! Good luck!

  • Matt: You ROCK! It's so true what Matt says; it doesn't matter what you have done in the past, it matters what you do in the here and now!

  • Seriously, I am in tears. This man is TREMENDOUS.

When I first started out losing weight (now over 150lbs loss), I ran a half marathon and I said to myself I am going to be the only fat guy there. I was basically but I finished it...the last 100 people to finish. Will share the story on my channel one day.

    Anyway, amazing story.

My next stop is an Ironman as well!!!

  • This story is really inspirational. He might look overweight but he is definitely an athlete.

  • I watch this show almost every season and am amazed at what these people can do when they put some work into it. Let this guy finishing an Ironman (despite the time) be an inspiration to anyone that is sitting on the couch wondering if they can do something. Impossible is Nothing! Congrats Matt Hoover!
