Mike, I know it can be quite a challenge to score well at a WFD event because of all the pressure, etc. I haven't been able to attend an event yet but I made my best effort to try and beat your 5 minute and 1 minute wfd records. Check my vids if you care to see it. Anyway, maybe you could post your own "at home" records since it's not fair to put that against wfd records. I'd love to see your speed with the "home court" advantage!
WFD rules are in place to keep fairness for everyone across the globe... so keep that in mind when attempting "home records"... your technique suits a shot more in Tim Watersons direction for Doubles....Alternated LRLR or not that is still a double stroke technique and has no validity in the singles category. Im not sure how old it is but its roots go into the 1800s so its at least 1 century old accepted standard. Singles/doubles/triples/quads are all defined by the number of strokes played with 1 limb before applying the other. The method used to achieve is irrelevant. its definitely easier to get high speeds with a rrll pattern because you can just use 1 motion and press into it to bounce out the 2nd beat with almost no extra energy. extend that concept to multiple bounce strokes & u get 2000 bpm
Also, I have another question for you if you have the time to answer, is the best way to get an accurate drumometer count to stuff the bass drum as tight as you can with blankets?
That's true but it also eliminates actual hits on the drum. I don't know if you do any bass drum speed runs but it's a pain in the butt to get that thing accurate. If you stuff too tight you can just sit there playing away and the count doesn't even go up one beat and then obviously it can count micro-bounces if there's not enough. I just have one big pillow leaning against my head right now and it's more accurate than anything else i've tried. It's a strange science.

Neither is really better. It just depends on how you feel about it. For a while, I played without shoes, and then athletic shoes, then skate shoes and now I'm back to athletic shoes.

i lived in moncton, new brunswick for a while and met some people who knew mike... pretty crazy to think that connections to people like him are possible in such a relatively small area.. met a drummer who bought some kick pedals off mike, he was a pretty fuckin brutal drummer too! mike just joined my former guitar teachers band, Dischord.... i guess im ranting haha
Mike Mallais holds the official world record for the fastest double bass. He got 1030 strokes in 60 seconds, and thats about 250.85 bpm, and Kollias never really holds a double bass pattern without a break for more thatn 15seconds, so I don't think he could pull it off for a minute straight (for now, that is).
George Kollias is not the fastest. There are lots of faster drummers. Mike Mallais has the official record for fastest double bass, but there probably are a lot of faster drummers that just don't get as much attention.

how did you train you left hand for blasting. I mean my right is about the same speed and has a pretty good bit of stamina but i can only do it about half the speed with my left.
Do some weights. Build up your muscles on your left arm. So it stronger so you can have more stamina and speed. And just keep practicing with your left hand. Its cuz u barely do stuff with you left hand so its not as strong as ur right. I just use my right to do blasting though.
Doesent mean theres no Muscle's their. You need to have some muscles there to keep up the stamina. You do only use ur wrist and fingers but its still a good idea. Like people go running and biking so they get muscles on their legs to do do double bass.
Yeah but adding some weight lifting etc can make you better with speed etc. But not too much though then youll be way too heavy on ur hands and arms and ull just smash the drums lol. I use my wrist's to Blast and im trying to do the finger technique as well which is quite hard. But yeah you can break your wrist and ankles by doing it. But its a good thing. If you break a bone itll get stronger after......I think :S

Don't start off an audition tape with apologies. If I were making the selection, your tape would have been shut off before you even started playing.
Keep it simple. Professionals in bands of that calibre don't want excuses. They want the goods.
You're damn good too, so you don't have to qualify anything about your playing.

Yes, it eliminates all chances of false readings from the resonating drum head. However, all rebound will be lost, so expect to "seem" slower.

how did you train you left hand for blasting. I mean my right is about the same speed and has a pretty good bit of stamina but i can only do it about half the speed with my left.

Do some weights. Build up your muscles on your left arm. So it stronger so you can have more stamina and speed. And just keep practicing with your left hand. Its cuz u barely do stuff with you left hand so its not as strong as ur right. I just use my right to do blasting though.

Doesent mean theres no Muscle's their. You need to have some muscles there to keep up the stamina. You do only use ur wrist and fingers but its still a good idea. Like people go running and biking so they get muscles on their legs to do do double bass.

Just playing a lot should build up your muscles. Some drummers use ankle/wrist weights when they drum though, but it's dangerous.

Yeah but adding some weight lifting etc can make you better with speed etc. But not too much though then youll be way too heavy on ur hands and arms and ull just smash the drums lol. I use my wrist's to Blast and im trying to do the finger technique as well which is quite hard. But yeah you can break your wrist and ankles by doing it. But its a good thing. If you break a bone itll get stronger after......I think :S
