@Joeykanga95 No. If you have ever read the novel, Ballard never speaks of ill treating the servants. Quite the reverse. In any event such behaviour would have been severly punished by his parents. The English ex pats were never violent to their Chinese servants, just distant. It wasnt 1860 Alabama LOL.
Its more likely to be a pent up frustration with colonialism, the slap as a metaphor.
cus he acted likea stk up prik to his servants... was quite rude to them so am thinkin they'd she had enuf, also as she was clearly out of a job there was nothin stoping her. but saying that i just wanted to hug him after she hit him
in the book jim's mother was raped but im not sure about in the movie. apparently in the movie jim's parents escaped, so i guess she couldn't have been captured by the japanese and therefore wasnt raped... if that makes any sense. but yeah, the japanese raped many civilians, so someone in that room was raped for sure.
@lavenderblossom I don't know why....but the idea of someone being raped in the bedroom, with the powder all over the floor never occured to me. The hand prints on the floor etc....good observation......I wonder if that was the intent of the director to make the viewer think that?
I love how it could be implied, or it could just be a false accusation on whether or not that person was raped. I believe she was...I wouldn't put it past those officers...And it's in historical records too.
That would've been an awfully sharp observation - except that the white spots on his cheek are already visible in 3:14-3:16, so I think it's some sort of a reflection of light rather than specks of powder. Nice try though.
Christian really was slapped in this scene. He talked about it when honoring Speilberg during the AFI tribute in 1996.

@Joeykanga95 Yup, she's no longer his servant & now his status as a rich, spoiled Brit means zilch.

@Nicky131Popstar I think his left hand moved toward hers when she hit him so it looks like he clapped.

I love the timeless furnishings in his house. It reminds me of the many fine old home interiors throughout New England.

The chinese maid left white dust on the side of his face where she slapt him so it was proberly her who was raped.

By joe you are right.
One part of me wants to say that it's a mistake and a result of bad directing.
But the grownup side of me sees the point.
Damn though I had it figured out there. Thanks for correcting me.

My educators must have shown this movie to us hundred times so I have to suppose I don't digest war movies.
