You know, I actually had the opportunity to BS with a Union Pacific conductor about this-- and his reply was pragmatic and reasonable. Because there is literally nothing at all they can do to stop the train in time, and because people absolutely have it drilled into them to use caution around the rails, he doesn't feel bad at all.

But signals do not matter - every crossbuck sign is a YIELD sign which informs one of at least minimal intelligence thathey must look and be prepared to stop if necessary.

There is no excuse getting hit by a train.

If one must commit suicide, don't harm others. Do it in a bathtub of very warm water. Sign your organ donor card and call authorities.

I oppose spending a fortune on RR crossing gates. They are unneeded.

In that wide open area, even the signals and bells are not necessary.

@PhantomDark21 Locomotivengineer can blast the horn if needed, anywhere, quiet zone or not. If someone is in foul of the track, the horn can be blasted.

With grade crossing signals, no horn is needed. Signals arenough warning.  (Quiet zones prove that!)

They know a train is approaching. The gates and lights and bells have sufficiently warned them. Another warning, blasting horn, makes no difference. They will drive around it, anyway.
