Good morning, do you like sixties? Listen and pod cast my program " great sound of 60' s " on the site plumfm. Greeting and made blooper in rock and roll.
Salut, vous aimez les sixties ? Ecoutez et podcatez mon émission "le super son des sixties" sur plum fm. Salut et faites gaffe au rock'n roll.
Well, I have only one correction and some of you may like it and some of you may not. But, in 1965, when they released the album, they listed the vocal credits to the original Supremes' Mary and Flo and the additional backing vocals of once again the Andantes. Mary and Flo weren't excluded, but the Andantes were included. They didn't appear again until 1967 as stated before. Mostly, for Mary and Cindy's supposedly background vocals. So Mary and Flo are on the entire album.
Just Now dont read this. you will get kissed on the nearest possible friday by the love of your life. tomorrow will be the best day of your life. however if you dont post this comment to at least 3 peoples you will die within 2 days. now uv started readin dis dunt stop this is so scary. send this over to 5 people in 143 minutes when ur done press f6 and ur crushes name will appear on the screen in big letters. this is so scary because it actually work
Kurt get over yourself, Go out and read the book by The Andantes, Mary and Flo are not on the Christmas Recordings, Any True Supreme Fan would know that, I know The Supremes were the best entertainers of the 60's ,Thats a fact! but it was Diana's voice that took them to the top of the charts, you heard Mary and Flos voice, it would have never crossed over or made any charts.
lol......u dont even need to read.....all u have to do is listen.....flo and mary have really distinct voices as do the andantes......the difference is kinda night and day
mary and flo are on silver bells and born of mary..the rest are session singers and it aint the andantes who didnt do backing until 1967. this was recording in late 64 1965. diane mary and flo. do sing and diane sings in the background on the early stuff giving it a fuller sound. true most of the songs on the christmas lp are not mary and flo but they ARE on a couple.
Anyone and anybody can find out which Motown songs and especially which Christmas songs Mary and Flo sung on by going to Wikepedia and type in each individual song and the results will show you which songs the Supremes' Mary and Flo are on and which songs the Andantes are on and which song the Waters sisters are on with Johnny Bristol.
Also, the Andantes first appeared on the Supremes' hit, "Keep Falling In and Out of Love'. Their voices were dubbed in alongside Mary and Flo's vocals. Flo was then fired by Berry Gordy in 1967.
I am a very true Supemes' fan Ralph640 and this time you're wrong. I've listened and studied Mary Wilson's voice to know it in the background as well as in the lead. No matter who she's singing with; she has the signature Supremes' sound. Even though the Andantes are included in the background, Mary and Flo are also singing as well. They have an undeniable vocal sound that's the Supremes. If you don't believe, then read the results from Wikepedia and other sources outside the Andantes' book.
Who in the HELL cares about The Andantes anyway? They were a studio "sweetening" group whose voices were used in the recordings of ALL the artists at Motown.......so what? Who cares? This is a classic song by The Supremes! I could care less what violins. horns, or other voices have been added to enhance the sound! ! How many background enhancementss do you think there are on Diane's "solo" recordings? She's never recorded a song without "help" in her life! How come no one talks about that?
Would you have felt better if they over-dubbed Mary and Flo over and over until you got 6 or 8 voices to fill out the sound? Diane's voice is overdubbed in some of the songs (You Keep Me Hangin' on) as well. There are two Diane's singing on that recording! So what? It was easier to bring in the Andantes when the recordings were in post production and The Supremes were touring.
That's true!!! I've listened to "You Keep Me Hangin' On", over and over again and Diane certainly dubbed herself twice. You can especially hear it in the last verse.
I understand your frustration and rightfully so. But, if you would look at the other posts and the endless disclaimers on whether or not Mary and Flo sung on the Christmas album or other Motown hits, it's really discouraging to hear people disclaim these wonderful ladies who also added to the sound that was the Supremes' sound. So to kill all that noise from the Nay sayers, I've encouraged them to read other fact finders such as; Wikipedia as well.
@Calvin375 The truth is the truth..............and that's what I'm trying to get out there to balance out the extreme views of the "Ross as a solo act" fans! Thanks for the support................see? I'm not so bad!
Ralph640 Not true! Mary and Flo are on each recording. The Andantes may have been added for enrichment as they were on most recordings made by ALL the artists at Motown. Why do you make stupid remarks like that? Are you trying to diminish Mary and Flo? Well, forget it! Diane isn't now nor was she ever THE Supremes...............the legend is greater that the sum of its parts. Diane, while she was the "Extreme Supreme," is merely a part of the legend.
Dont get me wrong I love Diana voice I just dont think that it was right for every song..Thats why the temptations, and the marveletes had different lead singers depending on the mood the song needed to set.I think that florence could have lead Let Me Go The Right Way.Thats why so many people think its Florence leading the song. The same way they do with a gospel choir peoples voices are suited for certain songs.
When artists of the 60's recorded albums for Christmas, they always recorded the songs with their signature sound to resemble their hits (for example, the Phil Spector Christmas album). The Supremes were no different. On this song, Diane on lead is singing it with the style that characterized their number one hits up until this point. With Diane on lead and Mary and Flo holding her up, it doesn't matter whether it was pop or soul, they are the legendary SUPREMES and were on top of their game.
Stevie wonders version is the best. You can hear it on This Christmas starring Chris brown .I think this song would have been better with one of the other girls leading.this version lacks any soul. But isnt that what Berry Gordy wanted? a voice that would not offend white people.Mary and Florence holding down that background
In the liner notes for the CD "Merry Christmas" by THE SUPREMES, Mary Wilson talks all about recording this album and how excited they were about doing it.....things like the original dresses were green (painted red for the album).
In Mary Wilson's Biography Dream Girl My life as a Supreme, she included an Itinerary, of the supremes career. She said that on September 14, 1965 The Supremes recorded "Noel", but that was the only recording date in the Itinerary about the album "Merry Christmas".
Florence whole with ABC spoke up against her first producer on genre choice (I think) and then she got a second producer who produced 'Love Ain't Love' and 'Forever Faithful' that are more suited to her vocal style and as a single were much stronger than the first. I also believe this second producer prduced Like You Babe and is the same one that Flo knew from the motown days
2008 will mark the 50th Anniversary of MOTOWN. They should do something nice to end the Supreme's saga on a good note. Reunite gals for the fans. Put away the bitterness and set yourself free of it.
Diana and Mary really should make the attempt at "fixing" this situation. 2008 will be the 50th Anniversary for MOTOWN. No better time to make a nice ending chapter to the Supreme's saga.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could see "someday" on the Oprah Winfrey show...Diana Ross as a guest suddenly surprised with Oprah asking Mary Wilson to come out and have a spontaneous 'tearful' reunion where they lay out their mutual issues and make "some kind" of peace and then end the show with a nice song like this song by both. I think it would have to be 2 shows Part I and Part II. This would draw huge ratings and think of the possibilities of them doing a new album together. HUGE!
What amazing photos. Just terrific. Thanks so much and Merry Christmas to all Supremes Fans - Diana, Mary and Flo.
