I'd read about these Spohr Lieder, but I've never had the pleasure of hearing one. Lovely, and beautifully executed. Spohr is just one of a number of unjustly neglected geniuses of this period, languishing in the (albeit deservedly) long shadows of giants like Beethoven and Schubert. While he did enjoy some lasting popularity in the 19th Century, I don't understand what makes music like this untimately ephemeral. This song is the equal of many a Schubert Lied - and better than some.
