Hi Retro, In the June 2011 issue of Golf Digest, Matt Kuchar describes his transition from the "athleticism" of your description, to a more controlled swing that allows for better consistency. And, Matt has become the most consistent player on tour. SandT is not an end all and be all for everything that ails you! It is an approach to obtaining consistency and reliability by focusing on the fundamental of the golf swing: hitting the ground in front of the ball. That is all. Nothing more.
@555harv thanks for the polite reply. I do believe in a compact swing (I love Nick Faldo's swing), with as few moving parts as possible (which seems to be working for Kuchar, as you say). I don't believe in taking stack and tilt as read. Too much of a flat backswing and reverse type pivot for my liking.
This stack and tilt stuff is utter tosh. Think about it. How do you throw a ball a long way? Do you pull back and then forwards, releasing your hand and arm. Or do you keep all your weight on the left side (right handed) and then throw it? I bet you can't throw it nearly as far using stack and tilt. It's just a fad.
@RetroJohnny1 The problem with your comment is that you are not throwing a ball, you are swinging the club around your spine. It is not a throw. It is a rotation around a pivot point. the traditional swing uses two pivot points, with requires a fantastic amount of coordination, possessed by only a small percentage of the population. SandT focus on one pivot, the left leg. It is quite simple. pivot mainly on the left hip fulcrom. SandT is best for beginners.
@555harv as you admit, it is a pivot around two points. Not one. So there is weight transfer, so my example is fine. If S and T is so good, please give me examples of prolific winners using this method - and their world ranking. BTW, this guy, Aaron Baddeley has ditched the S and T method.
Thanks to finding this I have changed my game from a short player to a sneaky long player..Driver was at about 280 to 290...Now 310-350 depending on conditions...I been playing for 12 yrs, strangely it was my friend that just started golf about 3 months ago was the one who turned me onto the dvds....
I tried stack and tilt, and hit the ball shorter. I don't have a lot of distance to give up anyway,,,so losing more is terrible for me. See my 2 plane swing.. under " 2 plane swing cp"
there's room for modified stack and tilt in modern golf, but until anyone of any significance employs it and wins with it, it will conitnue to get criticism. baddelly and wier dropped it btw
Interesting that the three most prolific PGA Tour players that tried using this swing ened up dropping it like a bag of dirt (Weir, Baddeley, Faxon). How many PGA/LPGA players are using this swing versus ones that are not? This swing is a racket. It might work on a flat lie at the driving range, but you can't keep your weight on one side when you're out on a golf course. The STACK-n-HACK. If you want to play good golf, study the fundamentals from Jacobs and Leadbetter, etc.
Mark92618: Strange could win with ANY swing?? Strange has NOT won a golf tournament since June 1989. 21 years. He won 17 events including 2 US Opens from 1979-1989 when he was going to Jimmy Ballard. In 1990, he started working with Mitchell Spearman, who is an assistant from David Leadbetter. Obviously, Strange CANNOT win with any swing. As for Aaron Baddely, he won with S&T, he has not won since he left. If you find something that works and makes you win, stick with it. Period.
I love how in the stack and tilt commericals they talk about how in the covential swing we shift back then forward becuase thats actually wrong. YOur supposed to turn yor shoulders so the front shoulder is even with the ball then your hips turn and shoulders hands follow. There is no balance messing up if your spine is tilted correctly, SO the convential swing is stacked over the ball. but the weekend golfer doesit wrong starting this philosphy. So theyre commerical are false to attract people.
If you lean forward as to hit a golf shot, put a club behind your neck holding on to each end, then turn your shoulders, the left shoulder moves down toward the ground thus in effect are stacked. 90% of tour players stack to some degree. The problem is everybody can OVERDO things.
If you try and do this as an amateur without having the natural talent of a pro then your just gonna reverse pivot, and your right in his actual swing he transfers his weight correctly
People can leave a teacher for many different reasons. We call the game golf, not swing. Perhaps there is too much noise going on in his jugular. He won with that swing before. As for Ballard and Strange....Strange is one competitive player and a great putter. He could win with any swing that he practiced and learned to repeat......most athletes find a way to win with what they have that day.
1tontomato: That is like saying Curtis Strange left Jimmy Ballard after 16 wins from 1980-1989 (and eventual hall of fame), so look at what an awful teacher Jimmy Ballard is. Very stupid comment.

Badds has left the S&T camp and gone back to conventional, that says a lot about S&T.
1tontomato 2 years ago
look at how he has played since
ssgolf37 2 years ago
That goes everyone unless your name is Tiger Woods. S&T is just a style of swinging and not a style for winning. Winning happens between the ears.
1tontomato 2 years ago
Badds leans left in the still photo and doesn't lean left in his actual swing. funny stuff.

I noticed that too. I think it is a case of feel versus fact.
