I agree with you about the GW sprays, the last two cans I bought were awful. I recently purchased the Army Painter grey for my VC army, after watching this videos, and the difference is amazing. So much better finish and easier to work with, highly recommend Army Painter primers! Thanks again WarbossTae =D
@DevilsPr0d1gy I'm glad the grey primer worked out for you! I agree, the finish on Army Painter is really good, especially when you're careful and even with the application, and not just overloading the model with the spray. Really glad you were able to get a good result with a product that I really enjoy =D
@unkhter Thanks for watching! I know there are other primers that my local hobby store stocks, but these are the ones that I use most often so I thought a thorough review of my experience with them would be beneficial =D
Nice info here. I think I have used the duplicolor brand before. I think that is the brand I used for my 40k vehicles. Its been awhile so Im not too sure. I have never seen the P3 primers and have yet to use the Army Painter ones. I am always on the look out for other brands to try though. I just have a hard time spending almost $10 for a can of spray primer. It definitely gets under my skin. haha
@VividAdventures2010 I agree, $10 for a can of spray primer is pretty sickening, which is why I love it that so many people have written in with cheaper alternatives. I don't know how much I spend on my Dupli-Color, but I'm sure it's over $10, and if I wasn't so happy with the results, I'd be pretty bummed out, as well. haha
I hear 3M makes a really good primer, but I have been using Rust-oleum automobile primer on my mini's and it works great. You can find it at wal-mart as well. I find black most of the time, but their is a white and gray primer from them as well. Works well on metal and finecast.
@matao0661 Thanks for sharing, my friend! I didn't think of trying Rust-oleum, I'll definitely check it out. I used to get my Krylon from wal-mart, but ever since my hobby store started stocking Dupli-Color, I've been using that.
@DeathlyTharcandus Thanks for watching! If you look through the comments, there are a lot of other helpful suggestions for primers from other experienced hobbyists =D
I use Krylon white and grey primers and they usually do the trick as an affordable primer but those nozzles clog up and/or the pin gets stuck down and a mess usually results after about a month of use.
@BluTrilobite Thanks for sharing! I've had a couple cans of primer clog up, usually at the end of their life span, which is always a bummer. I really enjoy squeezing every last penny's worth out of my primer lol.
@WarbossTae The thing is, I've had my Krylon primer nozzles go bad on me in about a 1/3rd of the way of use! Sometimes half a can and then no amount of cleaning helps, nothing but mess. I'll have to see how Dupli-color works, always see their stuff in the auto supply shops. Citadel's is pretty pricey, right?
I thought that video was very interesting. I have been experimenting with different primers. The first one I ever used was GW Chaos Black which I don't like because of the price. I have been working with Armory Spray primers for a while. I have one can black and one white. I had some trouble with the black Armory spray creating a dusting effect on the models. It has been suggested to me that I try holding the black Armory spray can closer to the model during use.
@redfox4242 I agree, GW Chaos Black is painfully expensive as a primer. I think the dusting effect might be lessened if you just spray prime your model a second time from the same distance, or maybe a little closer. The lesser of two evils is to have that dusty primer look. Its much worse to spray too close to the model and have the primer drip into the recesses while its drying and clog all the fine detail.
nice video totally agree I love the army painter and p3 primer if you are looking to a matte equivalent for chaos black then you could use any matte enamel spray paint because that is all the gw "primer" is works pretty well and is super cheap thanks for another informative video :)
@ZombiesRCoolPainting Thank you! I wondered if there was a good matte alternative to the GW chaos black. I'm going to keep my eye out for some enamel matte black spray paint because I really don't like how it finishes so glossy. Thanks again =D
Armypainter has 2 grey primers , uniform grey and wolf grey, which one you suggest to use for ogres for example. Hope u know something about the products, keep up the painting!
@gwgatekeeper the wolf grey primer has a much more blueish tone so it is ideal of space wolves etc were as the uniform grey is a standard mid tone grey half way between black and white so it excellent for priming (as demonstrated by girlpainting) so it depends on what you want the primer for, if you want a nice blue/grey undercoat that could be used as a base coat for something go the wolf grey if you want a standard medium grey then go the uniform grey route just my opinion hope it helps :)
The Dupi-Color sandable primer is used for auto body work. Its great for the price, around where I'm living, you can get it at Advanced Auto. I have a friend who worked for GW and near the end of his time there and when he left, they were using Dupi-Color sandale primers to prime thier models. The team down in Balitimore said it was the best they had found. Also as said Dupi-Color self etching is awesome on metal models.
@ZeggutandRobot Ahh, thanks for clarifying, and for sharing! I love my Dupli-Color and its nice to see that even experienced hobbyists from GW are aware of it and how great it is. In my experience, the grey Dupli-Color is my favorite primer at this point!
Im not overly keen on army painter if Im honest. Ive had a couple of colours now - Dragon Red is one and I have found that the paint I apply on top of the undercoat rubs off! Perhaps I have a faulty can but had 2 cans do the same...so I dunno?
I used GW chaos black for convieniance really, I used to use Humbrol matt black primer until it because even more expensive that GWs (didn't think that was possible huh :P).
Years ago used to use a £1 can of matt black primer from of the saturday market!
@KainTLA No kidding, sorry to hear about your bad Army Painter experience. I haven't noticed any rub-off personally, I wonder what causes that and if it can be fixed at all. Wow, I didn't think GW could be beat by another company in pricing comparable hobby supplies more expensively lol
I usually use GW Chaos Black or Skull White spray, although I use Army Painter Daemonic Yellow for my Imperial Fists, which has made painting yellow so much easier. I'd say use what you think is the best, or at least the best for you.
@1madhammer Interesting! I didn't know GW still sold their sprays! I think Army Painter's Daemonic Yellow is a GREAT base for Imperial Fists, its so hard to get a good yellow collor, and it sounds mmuch faster and easier to do it that way. Thanks for sharing!
I dont use primers i use an airbruhs, it is cheaper, it is sooo fast, it's very smooth layer that i really like. i think that the primers allways ruins the details.
@warhammer40kiss Ahhhh, I personally don't have an airbrush atm, but I've been spray priming the new plastic/metal/resin sheen off of my models for so long, that I don't know if I could start with my basecoats. I've sesen a lot of airbrush videos, though, and I really like the realistic and smooth results. Maybe I'll try and get myself one for my birthday later this year for variety and choice =D
@RatCatcherPL Thanks for sharing! I love that Army Painter has such a nice spread of color variety. I think its smart business sense for them, especially their bone colored spray with VC releasing later this week!
Krylon and Colorplace are good enough for me. I've tried hobby brands like P3 and to me it's not worth it. Yeah they're better, but Krylon and Colorplace don't clog detail if you use it right and it's cheaper. But there's one advantage to any self etching primer and that's that it's very durable. But you can never get it off which I don't like. Plus I can't find any white Self Etching Primers at Walmart or Ace hardware. But thanks for sharing your experiences.
@Ydouneed2nomyname I don't know if I've seen any Colorplace brand primers around, but I do like Krylon! I remember it being the first matte spray that I've ever tried, and thinking that it was great and cheaper than 'hobby primers'. I did have a problem with it clogging detail (especially chainmail, hair, fine detail like that), probably because I was spryaing too close to the model, or for too long. Thanks for sharing!
I use the wallyworld flat white 96 cent cans for plastics, works great. I just picked up a can of the grey to try and will eventually get a flat black to try. For metal models, the Dupli-Color Self Etching Primer is simply awesome. My rub off problem is gone since I started using it. Great vid my friend!
@Generalsplatton Thanks for the input! I've never seen any wallyworld flat brand primer in my area, but I'll keep my eye out for it! And I don't know if my local hobby store (that stocks the Dupli-Color I use) has any self etching primer, but it sounds great and I'm going to do a little more research on it. Thanks agian for the suggestions, buddy!
