Kingston is voted #3 best place to live in canada. right after, ottawa, and victoria.... i guess that's great... the survey was done by MONEYSENSE, Canada. you can search it on the net. it ranked all the cities and towns in Canada.
Toronto is #79. and that's where i'm going. i hope it's a right choice.
I'm still choosing over Oakville, Hamilton, Burlington, and Kingston...over Toronto.
woah!! is it just me or was that train going crazy fast?!? i could totally feel that wind. if you and the camera had both fallen over i wouldn't have been surprised! wow, this was awesome!
Very cool video! Really liked the approach scene. Don't know why, but I seem to get out railfanning more in the winter! Winter jacket and snowpants are part of my railfanning gear! I have a few neat videos uploaded. Feel free to visit my channel!
i am pretty used to the cold (i live along the CP sunbury sub in NE PA) if you count going and shoveling snow off of the sidewalk in my pajamas in 10 degree weather
see my first video called Trains In the snow and you will see what i mean
Didn't hurt at all. I'm pretty used to the extreme cold and wind. I dressed for the occasion. After the train passed, I walked into the station to melt all the snow on me. The waiting passengers and staff all had a chuckle seeing me walk in all white. Covered head to toe in snow.
My camera and tripod was firmly implanted into the pavement on the station platform so...no worries of it falling down.
Wow, that brings back memories! I remember when my older brother went to college in Kingston, my dad and I would go down to the tracks and watch the trains. Great video!
Thanks! The VIA station is still a good place to watch trains from. After the train passed, I went into the station to melt all the snow that covered me from head to feet! I surprised many of the passengers who were waiting for a VIA train to Toronto in there as I looked like Frosty the snowman!
It's all about being prepared for the elements...and being patient. :o) I'll either stand outside by the tracks all bundled up with my tripod and camera or sit in my car waiting for the trains to come by. Having my hot thermos of tea and sandwiches. Satisfying a passion for trains.
I'm very lucky to have found someone who is interested in trains. She has the heart and spirit of a kid when we go train chasing. She enjoys watching these big beasts rolling by, no matter the weather or time of day.
thank you! Hope you guys are coping with the snow there across the pond!
I haven't seen many videos of trains in winter so I decided to take up the challenge and make some while I have the time. You never know what you might see trackside.
Here in Northampton a couple of inches, no more. London 10 inches with more to come, the Pennines in the North about 20 inches to come overnight. We only need about 1 inch of snow for the whole transport infrastructure to come crashing down! LOL!!
Did all trains stop due to the snow? I have family living outside London but I haven't heard from them in a while. I think they are enjoying the winter treat playing in the snow.
The bad weather came off mainland Europe and initially funneled up the Thames Estuary. London and the South East initially caught the worst of it and train services in this area became erratic at best. All London buses stopped; something even Hitler could not do! Lol!!
You're a brave railfan indeed to battle the elements like that, but good for us ya did. Nice vid, I really do love seeing trains in the snow, it's awesome! Down here in PA snow is rare for us these days. 5* rate!
There's alot of good places along CN's mainline to watch trains. Did you see where the original CN mainline used to go through Kingston in the 1960's? Off Montreal St. The old GTR station is still there but all the tracks are gone. You can see where the tracks went by the old telegraph poles. They are still standing.
CN bought back the Intercolonial line from Quebec Corp Railway and it looks like they might re-route trains through there cuz of the big bridge near Edmunston.
Even here in Ontario, CN bought back their old transcon mainline but it's not complete as a through route. In 1996, from Pembroke ON to North Bay ON, the line was abandoned through Algonquin Park for enviromentalists. *Shakes fist* Damn enviromentalists. I support them in certain things but not in taking away trains through Algonquin Park and the Ottawa Valley. I know the Gov of Ont also had a hand in that abandonment. They got rid of three towns out of the park too. >:o(
The CP line (Smiths Falls-North Bay)through the Ottawa Valley is not as straight and flat as the old CN line. CP has many grades and cuts to go through along the river and up towards North Bay. It was CP's intention to abandon their line and transfer trains to the better CN line....but with the Gov of Ont putting enviromental restrictions for the park. (Returning the park to nature) it killed that plan and CN abandoned their line.
Now if the Gov of Ont would learn how to manage a provincial park like the State of New York does with Adirondack Park, then trains could return through Algonquin Park.
I hope it brings back big trains to the Valley as I used to watch lots of CN freights as a kid in the 1980's. Even VIA's old Canadian used to go by my house. I saw lots of foreign locos being moved around. My biggest catch was when two MP15DC's for Alaska Railroad were being sent west to B.C. to go to Alaska.
yah i heard they abandoned it because of CN's terrible safety record, I think i remembered hearing because of so many derailments in the park, but, that could easily be fixed if they would just lower the speed limit. Im not sure if my info is all correct i just remember hearing it somewhere so if im wrong feel free to correct me haha.
I only remember one derailment in the 1980's. The line through the park was the old CNoR. There was several trains running through the park eventhough it was MBS. User - sidomitch, has video from his trip on the old CN line. Beaver Dams were one problem along the line. They would block streams and cause flooding. Also, the Gov of Ontario decided to return the park to nature and destroyed three towns in the park. Forcing people to move out when the towns were prospering.
yah CN has made some baaaaad decisions. The abandonment of the newmarket Sub from Bradford to Washago was a mistake in my eyes. 1. If theres ever a major derailment on the Bala sub, the Newmarket could have been a perfect detour, now not as easy. and 2. it completely made downtown barrie look like shit. Its all run down and shitty looking. they are trying to fix it up but the construction work looks terrible and the old station is going to shit. The GO train has made it a bit better but..still.
The Newmarket Sub was abandoned around the same time as the Beachburg Sub. They both connected near North Bay. It would have been more beneficial for CN to keep both lines and have traffic going north along the Barrie route while traffic going south could have gone the Richmond Hill route.
The Bala Sub is a single tracked route with CTC passing sidings. Not much double track unless going from Doncaster to Richmond Hill. Now if CN would have made the Newmarket into CTC also, then they could operate three times as many trains than what they squeeze on the Bala now.
Of course you've heard the rumors that CN wants to get rid of the whole Newmarket Sub completely from Aurora all the way up to North Bay to another operator.
yup and maby the rail industry would have been better off in barrie now. BCRY is trying to keep it alive, but a big % of rail traffic left when the molson plant colsed. And im seeing even more industrial sidings being abandoned here. it sucks.

This video is wonderful. I like when the train passes and he does raise a flurry of snow due to wind.
Amazing.

Just numerous changes CN has been making in the past year.
ConrailSD70MAC 3 years ago
Yep, It's too bad with the cutbacks in the Maritimes..less trains for me :(
saintjohnrailfan 3 years ago
Halifax is an ice free seaport isn't it? I don't think CN would give up on a location like that.
ConrailSD70MAC 3 years ago
I believe it is. But with the economy in the crapper, traffic is somewhat down in the maritimes.
