  • why do they bring back to life a person trying to checkout anyways

  • or perhaps he lost someone to addiction

  • we watched this for our planning 10 class, and in the end, my teacher --a man-- started crying.

  • God, if u hear me: u r a joke.

  • hipster at 5:10:P

  • this is super sad WHY do we have to WATCH THIS IN SCHOOL

  • @Chaddillac28 Probably to make you think twice about trying drugs....

  • this is an amazing film...best film on addiction i've ever seen

  • East hastings smells like pee, and then all of a sudden in the richer parts, it's like the best place in the world.. and could someone explain what's with all the Butane bottles? what do they do with it?...

  • smoke weed not smack

  • This movie should be shown to high school kids. Very disturbing but brilliantly done.

  • @bryanddd They show this movie a TON in school. Grade 7-12.

  • @brittneymarsh1764 I'm glad that they do! That movie is hardcore.

  • Beleive it or not that woman nichola is still alive!

  • @sheldon420420 Is she really? I read on another post somewhere for this program that she had died years ago.

  • The woman at 3:10 is Sereena Abotsway. She was murdered by Robert Pickton.

  • i had to watch this also for a court ordered class about 4 or 5 years ago. couldnt remember the name until recently again... great documentary. glad to know theres still cops out there who are trying to do some good.

  • after seeing this my dad and I started working on a film in our area. local kids had a hard time relating to the people in this city being that we came from a smaller town.... same issues just smaller town. Have a look at ours here.

  • safe houses,, needle exchange,, medical treatment - SAVE LIVES - EDUCATE.

    STOP THE DRUG WAR ....

  • I remember watching this program in Grade 8 English, back in 1998(I think?). It was as horrifying then as it is now.

  • yah...she's on the needle...now...eh?

  • kids in the hall

  • They should do one in LA's central city east, if it hasn't been done already. Good lord.

  • This film saves lives.

  • I wish that there was a bit of play by play as to what they're doing with the overdose victim. Do not EVER try to perform CPR or rescue breathing yourself when someone is in an opiate overdose. Roll them on their side, as the poluice did, to keep the lungs clear and keep them breathing. Contact emergency services and let first response do their job.

  • @lesterclaypool1 There's a video called 'going under' (if I remember correctly) made in the UK that's about overdosing and what to do, etc.

  • @Swallowchllorox

Yes, it's on here. There was a similar campaign in certain parts of North America as well but none of those commercials seem to be online.

Thanks for commenting on that commercial, it's an excellent tool for teaching how to deal with overdose.

  • @Swallowchllorox

    Thanks again, pet.

If anyone is interested in seeing the campaign that Swallowchillorox is talking about it's on youtube under the title "Gooing over on Heroin".

  • Very Sad

  • Weed is too addictive, that's why so many people keep smoking it. Albeit not as addicted as crack or heroin.

Basic evidence of this is how Marijuana smokers are always trying to reinforce that Marijuana is so good for you, but it's really not... Smoking anything is bad for you.

  • @PsychoticButcher LMFAO! have you ever at all smoked the herb? people are huge reinforcers of marijuana because of its spirtual, loving, and useful effects? ... the herb is beautiful and for those who actually love it will tell you why... it is not addictive at all in the slightest. I have been smoking marijuana for 5 years now ... and am off of it for a month and am having no problems... so no your wrong ... go do some research buddy instead of listening to your mom.

  • @mehappierthanu If people can get addicted to shopping and gambling, people can get addicted to weed.

The mental proponents of addiction are stronger than chemical addiction could ever be. Thankfully the side effects of pot are minimal making it a better choice if you want to give your life to a foreign substance or activity.

  • hahahah - junkie scum, so skiny and pathetic. Anyone got any Zyklon B?

  • If you like this film - check out Odd Squad Productions YouTube channel too! We're OddSquadVideos Hope to see you there!

  • the first 5 minutes of this doc shows why Insite is invaluable! we need to elect a government that embraces keeping sick people alive.

  • @girlyvan Insite = invaluable? Wtf.

Insite was founded in 2003. This video was made in 1999. Insite couldn't help if it didn't exist.

  • @Swallowchllorox

Her point was that it's helping now and constantly under threat of being shut down. The gov't would rather addicts be using dirty puddle water, like in the first 5 minutes of this video, getting all kinds of diseases rather than to let them have a sterile and clean environment like InSite.

  • @lesterclaypool1 I'm aware of that. While I agree that conservative politicians in BC would love to shut Insite down, I don't really think it will get shut down. At least, I really hope not. I bring harm reduction up to a lot of people and people who don't really know what it's about really don't care to argue. While people that do support harm reduction usually come prepared with facts to support their beliefs.

  • @Swallowchllorox

Your comment very clearly stated that insight not existing at the time made it useless to the subjects of this documentary. I clarified that that was not the original posters point, their point being that this visual document of the DTES circa 1999 supports the need for InSite as it's cut down on disease and death and saved many users from overdose.

Though I agree with your response It doesn't relate to you misunderstanding the point that the original poster was making.

  • @lesterclaypool1 Ugh... what I meant by my comment was that InSite couldn't help anyone, as it did not exist then. Not that it doesn't eventually help residents in the DTES. Just that it was sort of 'exempt' at that point in time,

I'm really not up for further argumentation as to whether InSite is helpful or not. I'd be a total pompous ass if I said it didn't.

  • @1:53 thats a pretty bitchin' calvin klein shirt

  • in such a beautiful city i live in theres alot of problems, this is little amsterdam

  • I had to watch this video througha court ordered drug class cause i got busted with some dope

  • @livemylifetomaiden When you say dope, you really mean marijuana right?

  • @TheAnonredpill i think he means heroin....

  • @TheAnonredpill youare what you use.

  • @livemylifetomaiden So are you sober now? I mean are u not taking any more drugs?

  • we got to wach this in school

  • i have being living here in Vansterdam since 08 and i understan the change of the east cause i live on hastings its tough out here, not as tough as in mexico but i guess every place is different and unique in there own ways.

  • canadians are so okey eh! go to harlem or d.c these cops would get eaten alive the junkies too usa beeyatch

  • @dprinct yeah vancouver is NOTHING! in the bronx these cops would get capped for pulling that kind of sh*t

  • its great to know, gklad i have my head on straight! God Bless.

  • good documentary. watch it!

  • i wish we had police like this where i live

  • I do not agree with the message that these people just started partying and just happened to have addictive personality and now they are addicted to drugs. It has very little to do with your personality and absolutely everything to do with childhood trauma. 100% of the women who live on the downtown east side have been abused and thats why they have no home, thats why they are drug addicts. Not because they have a personality that lends them self to drugs.

  • i did a fucken OD and that fucken happends to me i hate that!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the emt at 5:02. "back from the dead sir!"

  • coolest cops ever

  • @jasperisneat i know these cops actually care about the citizens, they dont just wanna "bust the bad guys".

  • i got lost coming home from a freinds house and had a wonderful little jog across main street to get home to the west end at 2 in the morning. so that was fun.

  • Good show n why didnt you say that when you brought that guy out of his death with narcan that he wasnt free and clear that it only lasts a little while and he goes back under and he has to go to the hospital

  • I saw this in class when i was probably like 13-14 years old!!! And for some reason well I was looking up shit on here I just had to find this video! It must have taken me about an hour to find it!!!

  • Why is it so difficult to watch, just keeps buffering or streaming or something, I don't know enough about it but I have only been able to watch about 10 seconds at a time then it freezes....frustrating.......Is there something I should do on my computer to make it work better???

  • @saria1143 your internet blows balls.

  • why is the film named 'through the blue lens', what is the relevance of this title?

  • @aquauma i believe its titled that because you are watching from the perspective of the police officers(blue right?). Im pretty sure thats why its the title.

  • @aquauma becuase cops are known as "the boys in blue" due to their blue uniforms..and all this is documented by them

  • @aquauma It means the story is viewed from the cops perspective, because cops are associated with blue.

  • Damn. This is good. I can tell from part one this documentary is gonna be great... God love those cops... Everyday and their always focused and seemingly non-judgmental.

  • im tha AK toter. the speedball snorterrrrr

    Join Anti Poverty Committee Coalition...

I have live in Vancouver for 40 years.

most people that has mental-illness ( & addiction ) are not born with mental-illness.

it is the human society that push them over the edge, & turn them into drug addicts...

  • canada seems more chill then us

  • Singapore has the death penalty for drug trafficking.

Maybe we need that in Canada so we don't have a Downtown Eastside.

  • @Shukria123 The death penalty? Really? Bit harsh no?

  • @babmooks This is how Singapore rationalizes it: the drug trade results in people dying or having their lives ruined(see video above); therefore, anyone who participates in the drug trade deserves to die. A bit harsh? Think of all the Singaporeans who aren't hooked on drugs and dying because no one dares traffic drugs into Singapore.

  • @Shukria123 Yea but these are human lives, right. My uncle was an addict for years before finally reforming and is now working, going to school and contributing to society.People hooked on drugs weren't always hooked on drugs. Through A blue lens exemplified that a good portion of these people come from families and just made wrong choices.I agree that there should be higher penalties for the pushers of the drug trade itself, but not an end to human life.I'm not a romantic but I respect life.

  • @babmooks Ok, the death penalty is overly harsh for simple drug possession. But I hate the way that drugs destroy so many lives.

  • I frequented the bars around this area in the last 7 yrs since around 2004 and it has changed to this date( 2010) from 1999. I mean physically from a structure and building sense. The drug problem I'm sure is stil the the same, I dunno. I see alot of decent looking peeps down there that are still o htier way to full on ugliness addiction.

  • WTF do they put in the Cocaine up there.

  • I remember watching this in high school. It's a great doc.

  • randy did a speech at my school last yeat, great guy

  • YOUR BACK FROM THE DEAD SIR !

  • D.O.P.E...Stands for "Death-Or-Prison-Eventualy".

  • I hate watching this i cant believe they are making me do ANOTHER school project on it. fuck i have done like 3

  • Thanks for posting this so much!!!

  • Man....how quickly did the guy go from white to blue? Freaky.

  • I was suspended a long time ago in middle school for smoking weed off property (smelled it on me) and they played this for me in a backroom. 6 years since and I still find myself watching this video

  • This video will show what the Lifestyle of a Addict is about. Please view with an open mind and don't judge. I have a addictive personality and once was an addict and would spend 1000's monthly. But thanks to the saving grace of Jesus Christ and a relationship with him I am alive today.

  • Woa, I thought I was gonna hate this Cop but already only a few minutes into it, I like what he's doing!

  • YEA

  • I SWEAR IM ADDICTED TO THE NEEDLES TOO

  • @MrCallmejoe2121 AND TATOO FROM SHOOTING IN POP CANS

  • GOT TRACKS UP AND DOWN MY ARMS

  • wow!

  • Oh my GOD!!!

  • somtimes i feel like im gonna end up like this im already addicted too needles 21 year old lost a good friend to overdose

  • Addiction is an illness at the end of the day and they deserve treatment just as much as anyone. I mean would you refuse treatment to a lung cancer patient just because they smoked???

  • I hope to God that you never get cancer from eating processed food.

  • @BizzleSundrizzle Highly unlikely since I don't eat processed food.

  • @sparroworange hope you dont fall off your high horse and break a bone or something

  • @sparroworange That is good. I've worked in a fish processing plant and I see the nasty stuff that goes into those cans of Salmon. Some of those fish are full of worms and have big cancerous tumors.

The supervisor says "The meat is still good, Just Cut It Out"

  • Luckily I don't eat meat, either.

  • @HewzyLFC I'm not sure I understand this analogy. Are you saying that addiction is the bi-product of heroin use or the problems associated with heroin use are the bi-products of addiction? Because lung cancer isn't always a bi-product of smoking.

  • I had to watch this at school a few times and I've graduated now and still watch it about once a year to keep my mind away from making bad decisions. This movie makes me stop and think, as well as want to help stop drug abuse. Thank you very much for posting it. I think that everybody should see this in their life at least once.

  • This shows pretty sick i like it tho

  • "You're back from the dead sir..." LOL

  • Oh, I don't know. Maybe you're a sad and cynical person?

  • possibly yet police are not usually this tolerant of the lost and lonely..

  • I remember my class watching this in grade 8, since then, I've been offered ectstacy laced with meth, hash, pot, really glad I had the chance to watch this and realize that it's not all fun and games. I'm in grade 10 now...

  • WOW! Shut up

  • D: :(

  • hash and pot isnt what these people are doing, those arrent addictive.

  • Everything mind-altering is addictive if you have an addictive personality. However, hash and pot are not very harmful. You could even argue that they are not harmful at all.

  • @IamJustinAdam3 of course pot is addictive you dumb fucking retard. its a drug. so is coffee

  • @disasterpiece112 I'm guessing you have never tried pot then...?

My high school did a fucking study on this movie and about 3/4 of the groups we made had topics about pot addiction. It's not addictive. You're just another fucking retard that got scared by the media into thinking something that people GROW without adding anything into it is addictive.

Now go fucking cry about it in the corner 12 year old troll.

  • @IamJustinAdam3 man ive sat in a house with pounds and pounds of my own bud grown in my garage here in portland oregon. nothing to to, nowhere to be. i chain smoked pot every waking minute of the day. after months of this i can gauarentee that pot is addictive. dont talk shit, i was growing trees when you were in diapers. shooting dope to so fuck off you got a lot to learn buddy

  • @disasterpiece112 No...just no. You lost the plot big time "buddy". Maybe because you are weak minded and have no self control is the reason you find it addictive; so tell me then, why is that I can smoke it once every two weeks and not feel like I need it everyday? Oh right. I remember now. It's called self control and moderation. I wouldn't expect someone as hostile as you (resorting to swearing to solidify your point), but really you are just a crap individual with 0 will power.

  • @AZmesaboy you god damn fool its not about feeling like you need it everyday. its about DEVELOPING A DEPENDANCY to the drug. of course if you smoke once every two weeks you will not become dependant on the drug. however, if you use pot every waking minute for days on end, (called "abuse") and then try to quit for one day, you WILL feel addicted to it. you WILL go through withdrawls. you WILL be a cranky bitch. you WILL have trouble sleeping. marijuana use is easy to control. HEROIN ISNT. cunt

  • @disasterpiece112 I'm sorry were you saying something? All I saw was a bunch of random words strung together from a ignoramus trying to sound eloquent. Anyways, you bore me and you have a boring argument as well.

  • @AZmesaboy gee, i tryed to explain so your little head could understand, but if you just cant comprehend, i dont know what to say. i guess you'll have to learn from experience like i did. you got a lot of living to do...

  • @disasterpiece112 Still talking? Hmmm...After we find the cure for cancer and baldness, we should find one for people with the inability to reason. Care to donate?

  • @AZmesaboy you kind of remind me of the types of mind games kids used to play with me in kindergarten. i would love to have an intelligent discussion though. it seems you are not quit capable. kind of disapointing

  • @AZmesaboy you kind of remind me of the types of mind games kids used to play with me in kindergarten. i would love to have an intelligent discussion though. it seems you are not quit capable. kind of disapointing

  • @disasterpiece112 BOTH OF YOU SHUT THE FUCK UP!!

  • @disasterpiece112 Everyone seems to think that the word "Dope" in this movie is pot it's fucking hilarious. XD

  • @IamJustinAdam3 It kinda is... if you think about it

  • @dr8ken Learn what an addiction is then come back.

  • @IamJustinAdam3 When you smoke weed, you feel good. But when you aren't (ex. at school) you just feel bored and want to get high again. Sure its easier to quit but it can ruin lives just as badly as other drugs.

  • @dr8ken well i dont do drugs i smoke weed, i think weed is healthy...and if the whole world smoked weed the world would be at peace. when i go to school high well used to i got more work done, i thought harder and worked more efficiently...but i guess it affects ppl differently..

  • @IamJustinAdam3 I'm pretty much completely psychologically addicted to weed and I know it. That can be overcome with some mental toughness though since there are no physical withdrawal symptoms. Just irritability lol

  • This is an amazing documentary. I actually met Nikki and a few of the officers that were in this. I think Nikki passed away now..

Thanks for uploading this. It's a great thing for everyone to see.. I showed it to my little brother and it really scared him... hope it does the same to everyone else!

  • Nikki's still kicking
