  • hey man u can def learn sweeping in 2 months i learnt it in like a week its easy

  • awesome man. now i thought i had to put a sock around the neck to mute the strings =0

  • Hey dude, what's the name of the first song you name in "Examples"? I know it's from the Return to heaven denied album, but I don't really understand you saying the name :/ sorry dude :P But yeah please help, sounds epic :D

  • @WelshLane2k9 "Moonlight"

  • @LukeSniper Awesome! Thanks!

  • thanks for the lesson. it's really helpful. after some years of playing i started learning sweep picking yesterday, to fast to begin and sloppy as shit but a metronome and starting at 50bpm like you said really seems to help

  • youre a great teacher

  • i learned it in about 3 weeks after about a year of playing guitar. but i practiced for about 8 hours a day

  • the key to sweep picking is using a metronome. A lot of people are sloppy when they sweep pick.

  • you seem like a really cool guy. just sayin...

  • [u answered my Q on Yahoo] I havn't thought of timing each segment of my practice for 10 minutes. Good advice.

  • @Morgotheenslaver doing that is REALLY helpful. It's sort of a twist on the "straw that broke the camel's back" thing. You can always go A LITTLE bit faster, eventually you'll hit a wall, but if you keep going slowly you'll get to a higher speed than you would straight out the gates.

  • I dunno if its just me, but it took me like 1-2 weeks to master a few simple patterns. I´m not able to do jazz sweeps or Allan Holsworth stuff but i'm able to do the minor, major and diminished stuff. I dunno why someone would need 2 months to master something like that...

  • the pdf is broke :(

  • @tr0yhasfallen

yeah, my webhost went out of business or something and I haven't gotten around to getting a new one yet. PM me your e-mail and I will send you the file if you want.

  • Liers bragging.

  • Don't listen to magusGod he's a phony sweeping possible take 1.5 years to 2 years.

  • @JAMESLeadGuitarist Or you're just upset that a 16 year old can sweep pick fluently and you can't?

  • So what? I learned sweep picking in a week.

It is easy, 2 months though? Come on.

  • No matter how much you practice it, a week is not long enough to commit something to muscle memory.

    Just a fact.

  • I can do it flawlessly though... :P

  • i agree sir.

  • @MagusGod You have learned it in a week. But you more than likely sucked balls at it...it takes scores of hours of practice to get it down fluently.

  • @asdfkennethb13 Haha, actually I do a solo for my band with a diminished sweep arpeggio progression.

    Flawlessly.

  • @MagusGod LOL, I learnt to be a guitar virtuso in like a day, like come on Im just pro... you're def not a guitarist

  • @P5ych00 LOL? I am? Whatever, whatever helps you sleep at night. Test me if you want.

  • @MagusGod you got yourself a deal bitch, this was the first videos i ever watched to learn sweep picking. thanks luke :P I actualy learnt how and for u magusgod. I accept your challenge.

  • @P5ych00 Have a little post-teen angst you need to vent out there? You're so bad ass, going on youtube and insulting guitarists younger than you in an attempt to compensate for your incompetence. Fine, I'll upload a video showing you I can sweep. Then maybe you'll realize what a complete moron you are.

  • @MagusGod it's the video titled arps in the responses, it could be cleaner but I did it in one take, we'll see if u can top it

  • @MagusGod Lmao !!!!! yeah sure yu did

  • @bergAgreb Thanks for the compliment. You just make my accomplishment sound that much better. :D

  • @MagusGod you know what? I'm tired of this childish banter. I'm blocking you from further comments, and anyone that responds to your previous ones will have theirs removed.

Not all your fault, but I don't appreciate the bickering in my comment space.

  • wow this helped a lot.. ive been looking everywhere for black and white.. and even though its monotonous and repetative.

in just over a month i managed to start doing basic stuff and now its just about a week before my second month.. and i can do this shit easily. its like clockwork now.

i can play the leper messiah solo.

and i am going to attempt

eye of the storm (solo) - bfmv

i find that 5-6 string sweeps are fun

    but 3-4 are more challenging.

    Thanks Mate

  • dude this is bullshit, i can tell by how you play those that you can play those pretty damn fluently. start from scratch not knowing wtf sweep picking is and then tell me how long it takes to perfect. it took a long time for me to get as good as i am at it.

  • I never said that I'd never done them before, but I was great at it.

If you had payed attention you'd notice that I asked for anyone who has never done them before to try this and document their progress, as it would be interesting to see how good they could get in such a short time if they practice it correctly and regularly.

I still maintain that it's not a difficult technique reserved only for guitar masters. It's fairly basic.

  • i agree, i mean after about a week i could sweep just as good as the average famous guys who would throw a sweep in their solo every once in a while. ive actually had alot more trouble with alternate picking and two handed tapping

  • I picked up sweep picky very easily. I got into necrophagist and learnt some of there shit.

  • hell yeah thats how i learned my sweepintg techniques.

  • your so right. i got it down in a couple weeks, but it takes quite alot of practice.

  • I wish I had found this earlier, it seems like a cool little series to follow. Well at least I don't have to wait to see how it turned out.

  • lol yeah i think this is a gd method...im gonna try this tmr...i wound try it today but my last string broke haha...ill try to master the art of sweep in 1 month....ill practise it 2hrs a day.... god i hope this works cause i wanna do sweepings during my comming gig next month XD

  • Gah, I looked at all the video guitarist on sweep picking and holy crap, I'm subscribing to you. Screw all the other people. You're a perfect guru for a guitarist! Im still learning how to do it, pracitcing 15 minuets a day like you said. And i just bought a Ibanez Gio too, can you teach how to make a pinch harmonic or natural harmonic? That'll be great!

  • no no no, try practicing an hour a day. Trust me if you're into guitar and find it fun, it wont even seem like an hour. With only 15 minutes a day you aren't going to get very far.

  • if i master sweeping i master everything u need to do for the guitar muahahaha now to practice!

  • ive been doing for a week. i have it down... NOW FOR THE SPEED!!!!

  • good job

    dude

    rock on

  • i have no skills sweep picking yet so im interested 100% i have played all types of guitar music and i have played 2 years so i need to learn this

  • hey!

i've done it and got in within the 2 months, but i had a litte experience, so it doesn't really count as 2 months..i posted a videoreaction..if you have anny commment on how i'm doing it and if i'm doing it right, it would be nice!

  • dude, you're the fucking truth.

i love sweep picking, it makes people think im sick, when i'm not that sick.

  • sweep picking is fucking hard.

    i quit tryin

  • You only think it's hard! It's a really simple technique, just take it slow and steady and you'll have it in no time.

  • the link for the tabs isnt working? can you send me one?

  • Seems to work just fine for me.

  • I hate guitarist who base a guitarist skills on their ability to sweep or shred. I personally am a rythm/melody guy but I am ready to take the plunge into this stuff. I should probably get a metronome. Ive been using my foot lol.

  • thanks for the idea

I successfully completed your challenge although it took almost 3 months but now I can sweep like a motherfucker!

  • Hey

    I'll try with you

I just started today so maybe

    lol

but I got like 2 or 3 pretty clean so far

if I do em' JUST right

  • i wanna sweep pick but ive been playing for a year, how long have u been playing?

  • I wish I would have seen this video when you first posted it, I would have attempted it with you. I'm probably right at the point where you were when you started this. Sometimes I can sound faster, but it's very messy. I'm going to try your method, I'll let you know how it turns out.

  • Well please, record your progress!

A few people did videos showing the beginning but I haven't seen any results vids yet. You can still be the first!

  • Wow, you have a lot of patience. Its good to see that some people have rock discipline.

  • I mainly play blues rock sorta stuff & was never too interested in this technique...

However you did explain it really clearly so i might give it a go...

  • Although i guess the right attitude is "i will do it"...

You can never have enough knowledge or skill & it seems like a good challenge so i'm definitely gonna give it a try!

Do you have the tabs for the Major & Minor shapes that you were using..?

  • youve got a great attitude towards playing i recently broke my freting pinky and hope to get it back in shape for playing next month .ill problably take up sweep picking and interpreting arppegios which i still dont fully understand

  • What do you mean "interpreting arpeggios"?

Send me an AIM message and we can talk about it if you like.

  • whats your aim name?

  • LukeSniper, it should be on the channel page in the about me section.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love how none of you people responded to southern "Great after he called sweeps "Homosexual". By the by, I have been playing for yrs and am pretty good at sweeps, but as always, could be better. I am gonna try out this challenge..., it is good to see that you are one of the people trying to use the Information Highway for learning and the betterment of people and art in general kudos. LAT

  • I'll try it out if it will help me improve.

  • Thanks alot man for the tabs and showing me how to do this stuff. I am decent at sweeping but want to become faster and try to get cleaner. Thanks dude

  • hell yeah dude your right, patience is the key! other than practicing it.

  • Sweep picking is for homosexuals. Friends don't let friends play sweeps. I learned 3 string arpeggio sweep in an hour. Which aren't that hard.

  • Then it sounds to me like you really lack any sort of creativity.

It's a powerful tool if you've got something worth saying.

  • No, I definitely play arpeggios. Just Sweeps are over used and abused around these parts.

  • Well I'm not sure if it's this video, but I do mention in one of them how easy it is for sweeps to be corny.

  • i must learnnnnn

    i'm doing this :D

  • hey bro i so up for the challenge your an awesome inspiration rock on \m/

  • check out my video :P

i've been sweeping for month now

  • Hey man, you have really inspired me to learn sweep picking and to practice more rigorously in general. I have never sweep picked before, and after practicing for about 30 minutes I can already play them pretty darn fast. Shows what focused practice can do.

  • Yeah you're right it is easy. After watching this video i'm thinking about spending several weeks to practice sweep picking. The most I really need to work on are hammer-ons/pull-offs. I can pretty much get certain patterns down unless they involve hammer-ons/pull-offs. I have a question if you don't mind me asking.

Do you know any other hammer-on/pull-off patterns?

Oh yeah what kind of metronome do you recommend?

  • im starting after i leave this comment. i know exactly where your coming from when you say people judge guitarists ability off of sweep picking. ive had a couple people tell me your not a true guitarist unless you can do it. so here goes nothin.

  • yo man, I guess you already did this about a year ago but i'm definitely gonna take up your challenge mastering sweeping in 2 months. I've always messed around with sweep picking and set up some of my own exercises but i never really got any sweep patterns worth practicing often . So thanks for the inspiration and your advice on techniques man.

  • hey man youre awesome, Ive been sweep picking for 3 days and I can 3/5 of these shapes quite well!

  • nice lesson dude :D

    love the kitchen timer :D

  • ayy

    cheers 4 this vid man

im starting as soon as i have left this comment

  • Hey thanks alot, i found this video super helpful. Im in something of a similar situation now (i can sweep a couple patterns but not too cleanly or quickly). How often would you recommend practicing (this or any other form really) for the time to be worthwhile i.e. to see results?

  • The important thing is that you practice regularly. Think about it like working out. If you work out a little bit each day, you'll see results. Work out a bunch at odd intervals you're not going to see anything!

  • Thanks a lot for this video :] I think I would like to do a similar thing to learn how to sweep, so far I've been having some trouble particularly with the picking (it's basically like I pick every note, instead of a clean sweep) and it's not as coordinated as my fretting hand. :/ I'll work on it though.

  • Well if you practice the way I outline here, you'll get better.

In the words of George Zimmer (founder of the Men's Wearhouse): I guarantee it.

  • what are the common formations ??

  • If you click more info, there is a link to a pdf with those 5 shapes I used in the video.

I've found those 5 shapes (or incomplete versions of them) to be the most common.

  • great! youre damn right when you say its useless to play quickly without playing correctly. got better with your vid thks!

  • when he said at 2:32 he says u want to pick the not..wrongo! u want to sweep the pick or else its just picking i want to sweew ur pick down the strings...hense sweep picking

    clowns

  • If you were paying attention, you'd realize that the point of that exercise is to synchronize your hands at a fundamental level. I include it BEFORE I ever talk about the actual technique.

Maybe if you paid more attention you would learn something.

  • Yo man, I recently started sweeping, actually i only got taught a few formations yesterday. so im new to it as can be. im very familiar with how its done, i jsut stayed away from it for some apparent reason. im willing to give this a shot. i use the metronome i have in Guitar Pro 5.0. whcih i could also put the formations in and it would play with me. i can play a fewe formations very slow to show you exactly wher ei am at with sweeps. and ill post in 2 months i guess.

    oh those picks are great.

  • Hey hey, I cannot sweep pick at all so im gonna start this Asap and when i get a metronome.:D HOw often should i report back on youtube with a vid?

  • As much as you can man. I still haven't seen any results vids, so any progress you can show would be terrific!

    Good luck!

  • Madness, so its just them shapes in the pdf file in the description?

  • Yes, I started working on a lot of seventh shapes when I did my own (out of preference for the 7th chords), but the shapes in the tab are what seem to be the most common.

  • I am starting the sweep pick challenge!

oh, and Jazz IIIs are the bomb!

  • Hell yeah they are!

NO room for sloppy pick technique... if it's anywhere short of perfect, you drop the pick!

  • is that an order or is that what happens?

cuz I'm self taught and I do it similar to the "right" way to do it but not exactly

and I'm probly gonna have to start tomarrow cuz my guitar is under construction

  • I have done sweep pickign for 6 months now i am very good ill try and post a video of what i've done and a few pointers, although i didn't use a beat machine and it took me a month to get really fast.

  • dude i will practice this and show in 2 months just because you showed me how to do this so i will post a video comment on how i do it just starting and then another after 2 months

  • Jazz III picks, yessir.

  • This is a great idea, and I'm going to try hard to stick with it. Question though. When you say to practice just hammering on at 50bpm, do you mean just one shape over and over for 10 minutes, and then a new shape? Or different shapes throughout that 10 minutes?

    Thanks

  • Same shape for 10 minutes.

  • dude i am with you definitely, i can do anything but sweep pick lol, a lot of the songs i play have sweep picking somewhere in there so i cant do the whole song, im dfinitely with you on mastering i two months, ill keep you posted

  • Thanks for the video... I've always wanted to know how to sweep pick and thx for the pdf... oh I've NEVER tried it before at all... so in two months I will post a before and after of me sweep picking to show what I've learned from you...

  • Please do, so far I've gotten 4 video responses, but nobody has posted a vid showing how much better they got.

  • my sweeps suck. i understand the concept, i can do them slow, but speed is where i fail. either my pick is too fast of my fret hand is too fast. so im gonna take this challenge.

  • Well if you're patient enough to actually do something painfully slow, you'll be rewarded with results.

The common thing is for people to think "Oh but it's easier to do it fast, I can do it great at this speed!"

Well if that's the case, sorry, but it sucks. If you can't do it slow, you're not in control.

  • Great practice utility, thank you for posting this.

  • i have barely any experience sweep picking, i can do it barely too, i am definately trying this challenge

  • yo man i respect that. you are realy determind and thers not alot of muscians like you. props dude i will try to learn from the tips you gave me. keep rockin and and make more videos like that thanx

  • Sweep picking is only good in certain limited situations, usually for only a short period of time. I never bothered to learn it.

  • ya i am going to go ahead and give it a shot. a hour a day for the next 2 months. i dont have a webcam but i can notify you about it if you want to hit me up.

  • I think I can do it now. I'm gonna send a video response.. Is it right? o.o

  • i'm really trying to learn how to sweep and i'm gonna do this. haha

  • I thnk i might start this tomorrow..I can not sweep at all..

  • thats a great idea, i have to see how it turns out now

  • im gonna take ur advice on this, see if your way works better

  • it isnt that hard , i could do a rough example of sweep picking in about a month

  • Nice video man, it'll be awesome to see how you progress over the 2 months. This has shown me that you don't just pick up your guitar and hope to hit notes that sound "good enough", but to start crazily slow and work your way from there.

  • Rock on man, I've just started learning this myself.

  • man, you are a born teacher.

  • thank you man! I am really learning to sweep. Thank you.

  • I've been doing Sweep Picking for about 2 and a half months and I mastered the 3-string arppegios and added tapping to them. Once you get the idea down, it's more easier to make to 5 string arpeggios and some Jeff Loomis shit. If you need to know a master at sweep picking, check him out. :D

  • you didnt master it in one week. seriously think about what you say next time

  • Hey I posted an update to my first comment, but it's in bad quality, check it out.

  • fuck man, i tried uploading my response, i got one of the shapes down real good, i've only been doing it a week and it's pretty fast, abit slopy but it's only been a fucken week... fucking camera... :(

  • SO I GET THE FUCKEN ENCODER ENCODE THE MOTHER FUCKER RE-UPLOAD THE VIDEO FUCKEN GETS TO 100%... ERROR 500 WHAT IN THE FUCK IS ERROR 500... fuck computers all they fucken do is piss me off cause 5 million computer programers are unable to write a decent god fucking damned operating system!

  • fuck i've tried everything, converted to wmv, form wmv 320-240 to fucking mpeg4, everything is to youtube's spec... still ERROR 500... goddamn

  • I'd say the problem rests in the fact that you're using wmv, which means you're probably using Windows Movie Maker, which is a HORRID program. Find something else and you might not have these problems.

  • it's not that, it was in avi before, that didn't work, so i converted it to wmv, that didn't work, then i tried mpeg 4 and fuck man of course that didn't work, it's in the right dimensions and everything... what ever i'm happy wiht meh progress

  • LMAO....

  • i watched a herman li video about his sweep picking methods and it really helped me with the technique and i can actually sweep pick now. but others may not catch on as quick as i did.

  • you should include the "rolling finger" technqiue in your sweep picking practice. Just a recomendation, i didnt noticed if u did it in the shapes you showed, but if not, u should practice it man. Good luck on your quest.

  • I had somebody else ask me about that earlier today. Personally, I don't see it come up that often. I can do it though... perhaps I'll do a quick bit on it later this week.

    Thanks for watching.

  • well, for me it comes very often, but that can vary in styles. It would be good to see you do them though. Peace.

  • awesome idea bro!

I'll definitely do this. I don't really have a camera to post much but I'll try to work something out with that. I have NO experience with sweeps whatsoever. I'm forming a band with a friend that is amazing at sweeping so I need to get this down so I don't drag the rest of the band down (I've been wanting to work on it anyway)

  • well, if you check out some of the updates, you can see that I've improved quite a bit since I started (nearly proving my claim that it isn't that difficult of a technique)

So stay optimistic, and make sure to keep regular and rigid practice routine and you should have it down in no time (just don't get too excited and jump ahead speed-wise, it's worthless if it isn't clean!)

  • yeah same here...I WANNA SWEEP PICK!! I'll join you as well

  • I'll join you, I've wanting to learn to sweep pick for ages.

  • i was going to learn n e way so now im way behind your challenge but im gonna do it anyway.

  • this is pretty cool! im ok at sweep picking but your totally right about the practicing. practice makes perfect. i actually stopped sweeping for a while and im not as good as i use to be. fuckin A. HAHHA PRACTICE!

  • im in too, i've been playing guitar for about half a year and want to move onto more advanced songs like canon rock for example, i can play everything exept the sweep picking in it so im gonna try this 2 month challenge even though 2 months seems like a long time i learn most my stuff with in 1-2 weeks. well anyways i cant do it at all so wish me luck!

  • I wish I found out about this earlier, well staring tommarow Set 15 - Nov 15 I should be sweep picking great,yo the funny thing is that NOV 15 IS MY BIRTHDAY! lol but thanks for putting this video up cuz now I got something to work towords, hit be back up so we can keep in touch ^^

  • What guitar is that? Looks just like mine.

  • It's an Ibanez RG-520QS, year 2000.

  • Dude! I'm in. This is great to set a mark and a goal. What a great challenge. I have been playing guitar sometime, but I've noticed that people put so much measurement of a players worth into sweeping. I don't think that's completely fair, but that's the way it is. You are the best man! For teaching and then the challenge. No one on youtube has done that.

  • Whoo! So awesome. Thanks for posting this. Cant wait till next month to see how you progressed.

  • I'll try this with you also, I've only been playing for a year now

  • Wow, that is really great to hear! I just picked up guitar and am self taught, so this is very helpful! Thanks for explaining it so well!

  • really good ideas. thanks man

  • nice vid dude and unlike most of the dudes showing you how to sweep you're not a pretentious prick

  • good vid dude

  • I'd try this with you, I've always wanted to be able to do it, and I've heard it's easy and this is a good, motivated way to try. I'm on board.

  • i did it ^_^

  • Did what? 2-months worth of practice in 5 days?

Or did you previously master sweep picking in a short amount of time? (Because if that's the case, then my point is proven)

  • Cool idea, going to definately give this a try!

  • Great Vid dude.

  • Easy man. Cool idea, i've always struggled with sweeps, getting better slowly but i still suck...hope you nail it!

Check my vids and comment if you care to...got a sweep picking vid i did yesterday if you're interested.
