Most of the engineers were probably educated in England or America, as they are the best. If the citizens of Dubai had built these themselves without outsourcing then it would be impressive. Its all bought with oil money anyway; once most of the west goes green the money will leave these oil rich nations.
@mjp102 I agree, they think having this buildings is going to bring them prestige, but it's not about how tall they are. Those are American symbols. Ex: Microsoft the biggest software company in the world, it's buildings are no more than 7 floors high.

engineers call this the scaffolding effect, there is a limit to the height and its dependent upon the material used, gravity and all sorts of things. You can't build it all the way to the moon the same way Darwinian Evolution can't design anything beyond micro-evolution.
I agree, there must be some kind of limit... when constructing a building like this, it's obvious that the loads increase greatly as the building gets taller... the foundations must be able to withstand the dead and live weight of the building and also the building itself must be able to withstand superimposed loads from wind, snow etc.. tho if the design is right, and all factors are taken into account there's no reason why our buildings cant ger taller..

CN tower was the world's tallest free-standing structure for over 30 years. That is a pretty amazing record to hold. To not call it a building is a bit misleading - it is not like a radio mast because it has floors, restaurants, observations platforms and elevators.

It's more of a question of economics.
Mega-skyscrapers generally have a high level of vacancy for a few decades after they are built, and they also cost more the higher they go. It's probably possible to build a tower that's 10 miles high, but it will not be profitable because there won't be enough income through rents to make up for the cost to build it. Burj Dubai itself at its modest height is going to lose hundreds of millions, but it's just a boastful move by the gov't anyway.

CN tower was the world's tallest free-standing structure for over 30 years. That is a pretty amazing record to hold. To not call it a building is a bit misleading - it is not like a radio mast because it has floors, restaurants, observations platforms and elevators.
