Formerly, when a man set off a path in search of work or luck, he put belongings into the bag and hang the bag on a stick and held it on his shoulder.
When he walked, rocked a bundle on all sides.
He danced to the rhythm of the steps, it was called Matilda.
It's call "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" and one of the very best renditions is sung by Three Irish Tenors and is a beautifully tragic tribute to my Aussie friends.
like this more than the original version. we had to watch the original version in social studies class when we were learning about australia. i wish we watched this instead!! seekers rock!
Oh I remember this - on the ABC in the morning, getting ready for school, my mother making my sandwiches, then walking off to the bus, waving goodbye to Mum and our two dogs 'Lady' and 'Jeannie'.
I first heard this version by Harry Belafonte. It is indeed rare that one song can done in two versions and still sound terrific. This is one of them. Australia should have chose this to be their official anthem!
I wish Waltzing Matilda was our anthem instead of Advance Australia Fair (not only does everyone know all the verses to Waltzing Matila better, it sounds better too xD)
Yeah but the songs content has nothing to do with our history as a nation. It speaks of a man who steals a sheep and then commits suicide rather than face up to his crime.
I for one things think thats a horrible song for a national anthem.
If we had this as an anthem we may aswell put a cartoon boxing kangaroo on our flag and be a true laughing stock.
I posted a clip from the film "The Coca-Cola Kid" that features the Australian band Conway's Carnival doing a more rambunctious rendition in this same (Queensland) style. Just search 'Conway's Carnival : Waltzing Matilda' ...
hey brian, i first listend to this other version from the video about the rugby national team. i guess this is a great song but you're right its not an ideal text for a national anthem but i heared that until the 1970s this was the national anthem, too or sth like this.
by the way: listen to the french anthem and then tell me this aussie text doesnt work as anthem ^^
It wasn't the national anthem... we were still singing God Save the Queen as our anthem then... it was just one of the options for our anthem, to increase our 'independence' the other option was Carl Singer's 'Song of Australia'. Advance Australia Fair was chosen (obviously ). it won by 65% of votes. I'm too young to remember this... I'm just an Aussie history buff. :D
Well, I can't speak for our treasured Aussie friends and allies, but I'd rather hear Judith do Waltzing Mathilda (as in the football stadium on youtube) than Julie Anthony sing anything.
This is the only recording I've ever heard of this version; I must say I prefer it to the most common version.
I love Judith's 'Oooh's' at the 'His ghost may be heard' part.
What does the term 'Waltzing Mztilda' mean? I get the impression it's more than just a 3/4 dance with a woman named Matilda.
Is it an Australianism? I've learned that Billabong is an ox-bow lake, and jumpbuck is a ram... ...And what does a Coolibah tree look like? (Have I spelt it right???)
The "Waltzing" part derived from the German term "auf der Walz", which means to travel while working as a craftsman. The "Matilta" bit is a romantic term for a swagman's bundle. A coolibah tree is a kind of eucalyptus tree.
Yes this is the best version by far and it sounds so much better on vinyl !

Interesting, the tune sounds rather different to the other version that I would imagine most non Aussies are familliar with (including me).

If you think that this version is different, try listening to The Franklyn B. Paverty bush bands version.....it's fantastic, quite different again !!

Interesting that this is a totally different (regional) version than the one they've done in recent years live...

Interesting version I hadn't previously heard. It's catchy. Judith provides the 'oooh' harmonies nicely!

well in my opinion both versions are great. this one as song and the other one as national anthem =)

Vince I hate fo disallusion a fellow American, but the Austrlalian national anthem is "Advance Australia Fair"
There is a great clip of Julie Anthony singing it at the opening ceremonies of the 2000 Olympics
You really can't have a national anthem about a bum who steals a sheep, and drowns himself to avoid getting arrested.

tanerifisilt 3 years ago 4
The "Queensland" version IS known to be closer to the original version, than the "other" (more commonly-known) version of Waltzing Matilda...
Wikipedia for example, points this out quite clearly:
"There is also the very popular so-called Queensland version that has a changed chorus and the new chorus is very similar to that used by Patterson"
Of course, there are plenty of other sources available confirming this same fact...
