anti lag is when there is extra fuel pumped into the piston when your not on the gas so the whole system is always firing so the turbo is always spooling . that way you have boost all the time , that what the backfire is comming from, sounds awesome!!!! but its hard on your turbo so you wouldn't put this on your daily driver.

The Anti-Lag system in not intended to improve the boost pressure (the turbine pressure), but only for having no lag on the acceleration ... so you can have always the maximum power when you accelerate.

All the fuel that is being consumed is being completely burned. Antilag just lets the unexploded gas detonate in the exhaust rather than in the engine to keep the turbo spooled up.

Needless to say you would NEVER see this on a naturally aspirated car...

@Iurirx7 You have lag in acceleration for example when you change gear and the engine slows down in terms of rpm (usually it means the turbine pressure goes down and when you re-accelerate you have a little delay before the pressure return the maximum due to the more rpms of the engine itself)..... I hope you understand.

Antilag doesn't mean more power, but means you have always a lot of power also if you have soon released the gas pedal.

@Iurirx7~ "lag" means *delay*. When u take your foot off the gas pedal, there is no more exhaust gas flowing to the turbine (turbo charger)..... so the turbo slows down very quick. Then when u want to accelarate again, there is a slight "lag" before the turbo spins up to speed again, because of the INERTIA of the turbo. Comprende?

An anti-lag system is to eliminate "turbo lag". Anti-lag-systems are only for engines with Turbo chargers.

you guys trying to explain the ALS are a bit off.

it retards the timing so far, that the spark ignites with the exhaust valve open, causing all the fuel to explode and rocket out of the cylinder, out the exhaust, and spool the turbo. no throttle bypass, and it doesn't ignite because of the hot turbo (the turbo gets hotter because of the ALS though, and can destroy them)

Actually the original ALS for rally cars were based on an inlet bypass and used more hardware to inject fresh air into the exhaust manifold rather than pull timing.

Well, its not just a normal GC8, this is an 555 Group A ex works SUBARU for the World Rally Championship , in the Mcrae Subaru times 1995, 1996 era. The last before the WRC technical regulations arrived. Its not just the antilag, its the whole package, motor, transmission, differentials, suspension... just with antilag a normal car could never be driven this way..... The driver has skills but the car is spectacular and handles with real ease!!!

Anti-lag system. It keeps the turbo spooled up. I believe it uses a throttle bypass and retarded timing/fuel injection to keep more cylinder pressure which keeps the turbo from losing all its boost.

Timing is retarded severely so spark actually skips the power stroke and ignites the fuel/air mixture as the exhaust valve is opening. This explosion in the exhaust keeps the turbo spooling.
