Despite everything, weather conditions, poor comms.. the arrogant Captain of the KLM flight did NOT await ATC clearance to take off. But he did it anyway.

One way of looking at it ( and perhaps a rather bizzare one ) is that if that Capt. Van Zanten had not been stopped by his co-pilot in his urgency to be off, the planes might well have missed each other. Another tragic link in the chain.

@rtyutA1 There's another documentary here on YouTube which gives more details on why he refuled. Ironically if he didn't have the extra weight from the fuel he might have taken off faster and cleared the Pan Am.

@luckysod04 Didn't they say this airport had only one runway? I interpreted it to mean they were trying to get the second plane out of the KLM plane's way by getting it onto a side 'spur', for lack of a better word, but to tell the truth it's all a bit confusing.

the Pan Am plane should have turned away and pushed full throttle off the runway, even if it meant rolling off into the grass and into the terminal area. i think a little more effort to escape was needed on the Pan Am flight, even though it was Van Zanten who fucked up.

Looked at north tenerife airport disaster, ten years ago,on the net, saw real footage, KLM was parked in its space ... the PAN AM jet crashes over its tail, looked n looked ... can't find the coverage

The Rijksluchtvaart dienst, The dutch aviation autority, has concluded that this accident was NOT the fault of that bloody Dutch captain but the controlers because they does not speak proper English. This gives an indication what kind of bloody people Dutch are.

The take off sequence has been copied in several documentaries in the same way. They always miss off the previous sentence from Klaus Meurs. He actually says "...check list complete. Wait a minute, we do not have an ATC clearance". Check the transcript.

The ATC clearance is part of the check list. So... the check list was NOT complete. Was the 'wait a minute' a challenge to The Captain? Or correcting his own mistake?

Shame these documentaries always take the same subjective interpretation.
