Magic Johnson is such a good damn guy. Well spoken, so respectful. Always gives the best compliments and articulates so well. He is a perfect choice to speak on behalf of the team. A great human being all around.
Hey look its Christian Lattner first and last time he will ever be inducted to the Hall of Fame. He did turn out a solid NBA career though but not Hall worthy. He beat out Shaq who himself was a college player at that time for the final roster spot for the Dream Team
Look at the that flick of hand motion and head shake from David Stern when Magic said: "where is David Stern, the greatest commissioner of all time." -- Gotta love NBA!

@talisayon23 I believe Laettner was selected because a decision was made to select one player that still had an amateur status - meaning a nonprofessional. Laettner had not played as a professional yet.

Poor Laettner..Magic forgot about him until he turn around to look at Larry Bird for the last compliment & notice Chris & just improvise on his speech to add him in for the last compliment.
Magic is so silly..."last but not least I wanna thank Larry Bird. Oh Yeah, Chris, remember that time when Charles hit you in practice and you fell to your knees and started crying like a little bitch? Good times."
@CroBullsFan1 They were on the Pistons and were poor sports, Jordan wouldn't play with them after they pulled that stunt when they lost in the playoffs.
Christian Laettner got played dag.....did ya'll see Micheal Jordan..... his like it's ok brother you didn't get a shout out.......but he was the best college ball player @ the time thats way he was on the team...
I hate how everyone keep saying that Christian Laettner shouldn't be in that team... At the time, Christian just became probably the greatest college player (and is probably still now) of all time... Compare to the likes of O'Neal, Christian isn't really gifted physically, but he achieved his accomplishments by working harder than anyone else to be successful... Yes, he wasn't really a superstar in the NBA, but I think he deserved to be in that team more than the likes of O'neal
@sattaravy I will agree with most of that except for the greatest college player of all time part. That belongs to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, or Lew Alcindor as he was known back in his day. I hate to say it, but Bill Walton would even be considered better because of his dominance. Laettner was a very good player but he didn't dominate like those guys did and lead his teams to national titles every year like those two did
i love how these guys show respect to magic and bird. the seniority. the "big dawgs". and mj just sitting back like all the other puppy dogs. this is old school.
Poor Laettner!!! He started droping tears in his right eye at 5:06. C'mon Magic!! that wasn't cool! I feel sorry for Laettner! I wonder if Barkley reminded Magic when everybody was loud laughing at the Jordan joke... man! Laettner, I feel you man!!
John Stockton more than deserved to be on the dream team. They chose him for his decision making and passing and he was better than Isiah at both. And plus they had Magic too, so there was no reason to have Isiah.
"Deserved" is all well and good. No one is saying that Stockton isn't a fantastic point guard.
It's just that he wasn't the "best of the best". Magic and Isiah were both considerably better than him.
Isiah was kept off of the team because of personal grudges. That's why there was hoopla regarding his not being on the team. Everyone knew that he and Magic were the best point guards in the league.
@bubufubu At the time, Isiah was not considerably better than Stockton. He had that Achilles tendon injury that slowed him down a lot and I think he ended up getting injured with it about 6 months before the Olympics anyway. Isiah was no doubt a better scoring but they didn't need that with all of the scoring they had on the team already. Passing and defense was better suited for Magic's backup and that's exactly what Stockton brought
I'm sorry that you willfully choose to ignore the fact that Isiah was kept off the Dream Team because of personal grudges. Even Magic has come out and admitted it:
"Isiah killed his own chances when it came to the Olympics. Nobody on that team wanted to play with him. ... Michael didn't want to play with him. Scottie [Pippen] wanted no part of him. Bird wasn't pushing for him. Karl Malone didn't want him. Who was saying, 'We need this guy?' Nobody.''
@bubufubu You are1000% right. It had nothing to do with Isaiah being injuried. NOBODY wanted him there. Especially MJ... All the things he attempted to do to Jordan....."Freeze Out"... at the all star games, etc.... Thomas is a shady person, and they didn't wanna be around that
@bubufubu Ahhh, that's where I got mixed up. Dominique had the ruptured Achilles tendon in the 91-92 season. Hakeem didn't become an American citizen until '93. So again (Christian Laettner aside) it WAS the best of the best.
You STILL don't get my point. Injuries and citizenship are irrelevant here.
It was a hypothetical statement from the beginning.
IF everyone was available, then the best of the best would have meant excluding Ewing, Laettner, and Stockton in favor of Olajuwon, Wilkins, and Thomas.
And chemistry is not relevant here either. Magic and Larry hated each other for years. Jordan was an asshole to many of his teammates.
Deciding who's the best of the best in the league comes before all of that.
@bubufubu I get your point just fine. I guess I meant best of the best from the States, which except for Hakeem, was the team they had. Thomas was not better than Stockton at that time. Chemistry is very relevant. Larry and Magic never hated each other for one thing. They had an intense rivalry but never hate. They were even doing commercials together during the summers of their rivalry. And wtf does Jordan being an asshole to his teammates (which many refute) have to do with this team?
He was better at scoring, penetrating, dribbling, passing, and man-on-man defense.
I know this from watching him play. The way he could get around his defenders and get to the hoop. The higher level of difficulty on his shots. Thomas was quicker and more confident on both sides of the ball.
Isiah was capable of phenomenal passes whereas Stockton never showed he could add any flash to his passing game.
@bubufubu OK, now this has gotten hilarious. So, to be a better passer you need to have flash? hahahahahahahaha! I guess being the all time leader in assists simply isn't good enough if he didn't throw enough no look passes? You have now reached the depths of being a complete moron. I think I am pretty much done with you.
But only 1 of them has shown he can take it to another level by adding variety and flash to the mix.
Better passer between the two = Isiah
Pretty fucking simple. It's the same reason that Magic was a much better passer than Stockton. Magic and Isiah had the skills and awareness to pull off passes of a very high difficulty.
It's been a real riot exploiting your ignorance. Adieu.
@bubufubu Sorry, but you're exploiting your own ignorance. You're the only person on the planet (including Isiah's family and Isiah himself) that would consider Isiah a better passer than Stockton. Stockton HOLDS THE RECORD FOR MOST ASSISTS! And Magic wasn't a better passer either. He was able to make a LOT of his passes because he was 6'9" and could pass over a lot of defenses. Magic also had a LOT more options in his day and yet Stockton still got more. Hmmmm
@bubufubu Who said anything about willfilly keeping him off? Fact is, they lost nothing by not having him on the team except for his attitude and a misguided thought that he deserved to be mentioned in the same breath as Michael, Magic, and Larry. If nobody wanted to play for him, why would they pick him?
Because you were bringing up false excuses for him not being on the team. He wasn't injured and it had NOTHING to do with already having enough scorers.
"Enough scorers", haha. Every fucking guy on that team was a scorer.
Also, that's hilarious that you think Stockton was better on the defensive end of the ball as well as a better passer. Absolutely hilarious.
Do you have Stockton in your top 10 for "man-to-man defenders"?
I wouldn't be surprised at all to find that you are a stats guy.
@bubufubu It wasn't false excuses. It was part of the decision making. Yeah, Stockton only led the league in steals and assists during the early-mid90's. I guess that's why I thought he was a better defender and passer. It's not about being a stats guy, which I most assuredly am not. It's about watching the game during that period and knowing wtf I'm talking about.
I'll try to break it down for you...one...more...time.
My point is the determination of the best players in the league BEFORE bringing into mind citizenship, needing 1 player from a college team, chemistry, and personal grudges.
Got that, chief?
You're not a stats guy yet you're using Stockton's stats here? Nice contradiction. And to correct you, Stockton only led the league in steals in the 90s once, twice for his career.
I was talking about his defense. Learn...to...read.
You were inferring that Stockton had led the league in steals multiple times in the early to mid 90s. This is completely false as he only led the league in steals ONCE during these years (1992).
Isiah was putting in a hell of a lot more effort on the offensive end of the ball than Stockton. That's why he only had about 1,000 fewer points in SIX fewer seasons.
@bubufubu Putting in more effort? Hahahaha! Stockton didn't look to score you idiot. He was a pass first guard. You know, like a point guard's supposed to do?
I don't know WHERE you get your "opinions" from but that source is obviously deaf, dumb, and blind.
Pippen thrived in transition, often pulling up for threes and mid range bank shots on the wing, but could do very well with the half court offense as well, backing down and posting up with a jump hook. Not to mention he did a shit load of slashing to the hoop as well.
@bubufubu Actually, now I'm convinced YOU are clueless. Obviously they COULD score. Almost everyone can. Steve Nash can hit the pull up 3, penetrate and hit pull up jumpers, etc. but would you call him a scorer? Of course not! Magic wasn't asked to score until the late 80's when Kareem was edging towards retirement, but before that and even after, he was the guy that got everyone else their points. Did you actually watch any games from the 80's early 90's or are you just guessing? Idiot
Since ignorant folks such as yourself ONLY seem to understand statistics:
From '89 to '98, Pippen averaged 19 a game (4 years he was over 20). Nearly 15,000 points in 833 games.
For his entire career, Magic averaged 19 a game (4 years of over 20 as well). In his second year, he averaged 21 a game. More than 17,000 points for his career. Passer, SCORER, and rebounder.
The numbers back it up. They did all that scoring while playing alongside KAREEM and JORDAN. Wake the fuck up.
@bubufubu 19 a game does not make you a scorer. Mid 20's and up makes you a scorer. 19 makes you an average scorer at best. Man, you are a fucking idiot
Excellent at penetrating, which he often did. Had also his baby book and great range on his jump shot.
The bulk of his points came from inside the paint. And that's what Magic did. He got out quick and got that ball to the hoop. He was a scorer, a passer, and a rebounder.
@bubufubu Magic wasn't fast or quick. He didn't penetrate in the halfcourt offense, he got through on the fast break. Big difference. And he wasn't scoring most of the times on those breaks, he was setting someone up.
@bubufubu As you said. Learn...to...READ. I said he wasn't fast OR quick. At the age of 36 he was a power forward who posted up a lot. He might have caught people with head fakes, but he wasn't "juking" any guards, that's for sure. That's because when he came back the last time he wasn't always bringing the ball up. Nick Van Exel was. *sigh*. It really is hard having a discussion with the clueless
@fundyspokerblog He was fast... He would be a little slower of what Lebron is today but, the fact he was 6'8 or 6'9 and a PG his speed with his size allowed him to be almost impossible to guard. He was still getting 20+ PPG while getting usually 10-20 APG. Thats the reason why he is know as one of the best.
@ShadowNightGamer Magic was nowhere near as fast in the open court as Lebron is. Lebron is scary fast. Magic was fast in the open court for a guy his size, but what I meant was in the halfcourt he was not taking his man off the dribble like, say Allen Iverson would. He would post up a small guard instead but even back then you didn't have the guards posting up a lot. Instead, the halfcourt O ran through Kareem and James Worthy in the post
@fundyspokerblog Magic was pretty fast in his time. He's not Lebron, D-Wade, or D-Rose fast but, for being a 6'9 PG who can shoot, but is a GREAT passer, you wouldn't think he's athletic and somewhat fast like he was. All the PGs he faced couldn't defend him because, of his height advantage and he had long strides with his legs.
@pastorfw I'm not sure if you can say the best... You still have people like Dr. J, MJ, and even underrated people who played with their heart like Karl Malone.
@apacherose01 I agree except the laettner choice, they wanted to have a white person, they also could have chosen Shaq as he was also a rookie at that time.
So that's Christian Laettner standing back there!?.......I was wondering who the hell that was.....I thought maybe it was the ghost of Pete Maravich or maybe just a hall of fame security guard. When did he start looking like Lurch from the Adams Family?

I hate how everyone keep saying that Christian Laettner shouldn't be in that team... At the time, Christian just became probably the greatest college player (and is probably still now) of all time... Compare to the likes of O'Neal, Christian isn't really gifted physically, but he achieved his accomplishments by working harder than anyone else to be successful... Yes, he wasn't really a superstar in the NBA, but I think he deserved to be in that team more than the likes of O'neal
sattaravy 1 year ago 3
@sattaravy I will agree with most of that except for the greatest college player of all time part. That belongs to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, or Lew Alcindor as he was known back in his day. I hate to say it, but Bill Walton would even be considered better because of his dominance. Laettner was a very good player but he didn't dominate like those guys did and lead his teams to national titles every year like those two did

Not quite.
Replace Ewing with Olajuwon, Laettner with Wilkins, and Stockton with Isiah and then you've got the best of the best.
bubufubu 1 year ago
@bubufubu
John Stockton more than deserved to be on the dream team. They chose him for his decision making and passing and he was better than Isiah at both. And plus they had Magic too, so there was no reason to have Isiah.
Kingjd87 1 year ago
"Deserved" is all well and good. No one is saying that Stockton isn't a fantastic point guard.
It's just that he wasn't the "best of the best". Magic and Isiah were both considerably better than him.
Isiah was kept off of the team because of personal grudges. That's why there was hoopla regarding his not being on the team. Everyone knew that he and Magic were the best point guards in the league.
bubufubu 1 year ago
@bubufubu At the time, Isiah was not considerably better than Stockton. He had that Achilles tendon injury that slowed him down a lot and I think he ended up getting injured with it about 6 months before the Olympics anyway. Isiah was no doubt a better scoring but they didn't need that with all of the scoring they had on the team already. Passing and defense was better suited for Magic's backup and that's exactly what Stockton brought
fundyspokerblog 1 year ago
Isiah tore his Achilles' Tendon in 1994.
Who was saying, 'We need this guy?' Nobody.''
bubufubu 1 year ago
@bubufubu You are1000% right. It had nothing to do with Isaiah being injuried. NOBODY wanted him there. Especially MJ... All the things he attempted to do to Jordan....."Freeze Out"... at the all star games, etc.... Thomas is a shady person, and they didn't wanna be around that
KJig5 1 year ago
By this point, EVERYONE should be aware of the reasons why Isiah was kept off the Dream Team.
My initial response was to k3n12ock. He or she was saying that this team was the "best of the best" and that simply is not true.
The "best of the best" would have meant having Isiah (along with Wilkins and Olajuwon) on that team.
bubufubu 1 year ago
@bubufubu Ahhh, that's where I got mixed up. Dominique had the ruptured Achilles tendon in the 91-92 season. Hakeem didn't become an American citizen until '93. So again (Christian Laettner aside) it WAS the best of the best.
fundyspokerblog 1 year ago
You STILL don't get my point. Injuries and citizenship are irrelevant here.
It was a hypothetical statement from the beginning.
IF everyone was available, then the best of the best would have meant excluding Ewing, Laettner, and Stockton in favor of Olajuwon, Wilkins, and Thomas.
And chemistry is not relevant here either. Magic and Larry hated each other for years. Jordan was an asshole to many of his teammates.
Deciding who's the best of the best in the league comes before all of that.
bubufubu 1 year ago
@bubufubu I get your point just fine. I guess I meant best of the best from the States, which except for Hakeem, was the team they had. Thomas was not better than Stockton at that time. Chemistry is very relevant. Larry and Magic never hated each other for one thing. They had an intense rivalry but never hate. They were even doing commercials together during the summers of their rivalry. And wtf does Jordan being an asshole to his teammates (which many refute) have to do with this team?
fundyspokerblog 1 year ago
Thomas was considerably better than Stockton.
He was better at scoring, penetrating, dribbling, passing, and man-on-man defense.
I know this from watching him play. The way he could get around his defenders and get to the hoop. The higher level of difficulty on his shots. Thomas was quicker and more confident on both sides of the ball.
Isiah was capable of phenomenal passes whereas Stockton never showed he could add any flash to his passing game.
bubufubu 1 year ago
@bubufubu OK, now this has gotten hilarious. So, to be a better passer you need to have flash? hahahahahahahaha! I guess being the all time leader in assists simply isn't good enough if he didn't throw enough no look passes? You have now reached the depths of being a complete moron. I think I am pretty much done with you.
fundyspokerblog 1 year ago
You have 2 players, Isiah and Stockton.
Both are capable of textbook passes.
Adieu.
bubufubu 1 year ago
@bubufubu Sorry, but you're exploiting your own ignorance. You're the only person on the planet (including Isiah's family and Isiah himself) that would consider Isiah a better passer than Stockton. Stockton HOLDS THE RECORD FOR MOST ASSISTS! And Magic wasn't a better passer either. He was able to make a LOT of his passes because he was 6'9" and could pass over a lot of defenses. Magic also had a LOT more options in his day and yet Stockton still got more. Hmmmm
fundyspokerblog 1 year ago
@bubufubu Who said anything about willfilly keeping him off? Fact is, they lost nothing by not having him on the team except for his attitude and a misguided thought that he deserved to be mentioned in the same breath as Michael, Magic, and Larry. If nobody wanted to play for him, why would they pick him?
fundyspokerblog 1 year ago
Because you were bringing up false excuses for him not being on the team. He wasn't injured and it had NOTHING to do with already having enough scorers.
"Enough scorers", haha. Every fucking guy on that team was a scorer.
Also, that's hilarious that you think Stockton was better on the defensive end of the ball as well as a better passer. Absolutely hilarious.
Do you have Stockton in your top 10 for "man-to-man defenders"?
I wouldn't be surprised at all to find that you are a stats guy.
bubufubu 1 year ago
@bubufubu It wasn't false excuses. It was part of the decision making. Yeah, Stockton only led the league in steals and assists during the early-mid90's. I guess that's why I thought he was a better defender and passer. It's not about being a stats guy, which I most assuredly am not. It's about watching the game during that period and knowing wtf I'm talking about.
fundyspokerblog 1 year ago
I'll try to break it down for you...one...more...time.
My point is the determination of the best players in the league BEFORE bringing into mind citizenship, needing 1 player from a college team, chemistry, and personal grudges.
Got that, chief?
You're not a stats guy yet you're using Stockton's stats here? Nice contradiction. And to correct you, Stockton only led the league in steals in the 90s once, twice for his career.
bubufubu 1 year ago
@bubufubu Actually, I'll go ahead and correct you. He led the league in assists 9 times. That's an NBA record. Just thought you should know
fundyspokerblog 1 year ago
I was talking about his defense. Learn...to...read.
You were inferring that Stockton had led the league in steals multiple times in the early to mid 90s. This is completely false as he only led the league in steals ONCE during these years (1992).
Isiah was putting in a hell of a lot more effort on the offensive end of the ball than Stockton. That's why he only had about 1,000 fewer points in SIX fewer seasons.
bubufubu 1 year ago
@bubufubu Putting in more effort? Hahahaha! Stockton didn't look to score you idiot. He was a pass first guard. You know, like a point guard's supposed to do?
fundyspokerblog 1 year ago
@bubufubu Also, Pippen was a scorer? Magic was a scorer? Really?
fundyspokerblog 1 year ago
Wow, now I'm convinced you are clueless.
I don't know WHERE you get your "opinions" from but that source is obviously deaf, dumb, and blind.
Pippen thrived in transition, often pulling up for threes and mid range bank shots on the wing, but could do very well with the half court offense as well, backing down and posting up with a jump hook. Not to mention he did a shit load of slashing to the hoop as well.
bubufubu 1 year ago
@bubufubu Actually, now I'm convinced YOU are clueless. Obviously they COULD score. Almost everyone can. Steve Nash can hit the pull up 3, penetrate and hit pull up jumpers, etc. but would you call him a scorer? Of course not! Magic wasn't asked to score until the late 80's when Kareem was edging towards retirement, but before that and even after, he was the guy that got everyone else their points. Did you actually watch any games from the 80's early 90's or are you just guessing? Idiot
fundyspokerblog 1 year ago
Since ignorant folks such as yourself ONLY seem to understand statistics:
From '89 to '98, Pippen averaged 19 a game (4 years he was over 20). Nearly 15,000 points in 833 games.
For his entire career, Magic averaged 19 a game (4 years of over 20 as well). In his second year, he averaged 21 a game. More than 17,000 points for his career. Passer, SCORER, and rebounder.
The numbers back it up. They did all that scoring while playing alongside KAREEM and JORDAN. Wake the fuck up.
bubufubu 1 year ago
@bubufubu 19 a game does not make you a scorer. Mid 20's and up makes you a scorer. 19 makes you an average scorer at best. Man, you are a fucking idiot
fundyspokerblog 1 year ago
Magic was not fast but boy was he quick.
Excellent at penetrating, which he often did. Had also his baby book and great range on his jump shot.
The bulk of his points came from inside the paint. And that's what Magic did. He got out quick and got that ball to the hoop. He was a scorer, a passer, and a rebounder.
bubufubu 1 year ago
@bubufubu Magic wasn't fast or quick. He didn't penetrate in the halfcourt offense, he got through on the fast break. Big difference. And he wasn't scoring most of the times on those breaks, he was setting someone up.
fundyspokerblog 1 year ago
I never said he was fast. I said "quick". Can you comprehend the difference between the two?
And, yes, he was quick. His feet and especially his hands. At the age of 36 and around 240lbs, he was STILL juking guys. Younger ones.
It doesn't matter if he was "asked to score" or not. He scored. A lot.
What a pathetically weak argument that is, lol.
19 a game over 12 seasons is not a fluke occurrence. It's a lot of scoring, on a consistent basis.
bubufubu 1 year ago
@bubufubu As you said. Learn...to...READ. I said he wasn't fast OR quick. At the age of 36 he was a power forward who posted up a lot. He might have caught people with head fakes, but he wasn't "juking" any guards, that's for sure. That's because when he came back the last time he wasn't always bringing the ball up. Nick Van Exel was. *sigh*. It really is hard having a discussion with the clueless
fundyspokerblog 1 year ago
@fundyspokerblog He was fast... He would be a little slower of what Lebron is today but, the fact he was 6'8 or 6'9 and a PG his speed with his size allowed him to be almost impossible to guard. He was still getting 20+ PPG while getting usually 10-20 APG. Thats the reason why he is know as one of the best.
ShadowNightGamer 11 months ago
@ShadowNightGamer Magic was nowhere near as fast in the open court as Lebron is. Lebron is scary fast. Magic was fast in the open court for a guy his size, but what I meant was in the halfcourt he was not taking his man off the dribble like, say Allen Iverson would. He would post up a small guard instead but even back then you didn't have the guards posting up a lot. Instead, the halfcourt O ran through Kareem and James Worthy in the post
fundyspokerblog 11 months ago
@fundyspokerblog Magic was pretty fast in his time. He's not Lebron, D-Wade, or D-Rose fast but, for being a 6'9 PG who can shoot, but is a GREAT passer, you wouldn't think he's athletic and somewhat fast like he was. All the PGs he faced couldn't defend him because, of his height advantage and he had long strides with his legs.
