Really great review - was actually this review that really killed any doubts I had whether to get this one or go a step up in price to a MIM J-bass - and I don't regret it at all! ;)
However, I feel like my bass isn't set up as well as it should be - I've also made some dumb adjustments to the truss rod... so is there any chance you guys could shoot a bass-setup tutorial video?
I am torn between this one and the Sterling by Musicman SB14. I think this one seems more versatile. I play jazz to metal. Also wondering about the G&L JB2. How is the neck on the L2000? Is the back of the neck flatter or rounded?
@afzoomie67 - Totally different feel and tone. The Lakie has a slim, Jazz-like neck. The G&L is a bit chunkier, like a P. They're both real nice basses for the money, you can't go wrong with either one, but I'm afraid I can't tell you which you should buy. That has to be your choice.
@BassGuitarMag I like both so much! I can't decide, I mean, I like the 4401 but it has no pick up toggle, and this goes active/passive. But you can't really beat a Lakland..(IMO, except with a Rickenbacker)
@afzoomie67 - Maple is a little brighter, snappier. Rosewood is a little darker, mellower - but it's subtle. You'd notice if you could play each side by side through the same amp.
i wanted this bass so bad when i started playing because my favorite bassist used this. the store didnt have one for right handers (yea they had a lefty G&L L2000 tribute) , so i got a different one.... 6 years later im still regretting it.
@RadioMasterDude - It's a pretty bright instrument, and this is old. I wasn't using a good mic then and recoding into Protools, this was the mic on the camera picking up the amp in the room. Doesn't really do it justice.
but when I plug it direct, wether it's for live playing, or for recording, I get a really loud clicking sound when I try slapping and popping, which I know comes from the strings hitting the pickups.
The thing is, the problem doesn't happen if I'm not plugged in directly, every amp I tried(I playd with it on quite a few brands) didn't let the clicking sound through.
Is there a way to fix this? or should I just started using a mic'd amp?
@iliachulsky - Your problem doesn't make sense. If you are hitting the strings to the pickup, it should happen regardless of whether you play direct or through an amp. So, you might try lowering the pickups if that is the source of the sound.
@iliachulsky yes, there are a few things you should look at. 1. Pickup height. This can be adjusted. Then, if they are the correct height, you should compare your slap volume to your fingerstyle volume. If your slap is much louder, you are just hitting the strings too hard. Volume comes from your amp, not how hard you hit the strings, let your amp do the work and pay attention to the different dynamics between slap and fingerstyle.
i 've seen you have also made a demo about the yamaha bb 1025x. Should i wait until i have more money for a yamaha bb 1024x or should i buy this bass?
@marthinator10 - I did a demo of the Yamaha 2025X. They are two totally different sounding basses. That's like asking if you should buy a Toyota Corolla or a Dodge Ram pickup truck. Listen to them both, and really.... go out and play them both. Then you'll know which one to buy.
Hey Ed, I loved this bass, but it's still not what I'm looking for. Could you give me your opinion please: I love MusicMan basses, love the Sterling tone for rock and playing alone because i love the series sound, but for the other styles it's a too harsh; the StingRay tone fits better for them because it's more soft and has a very nice slap tone... Playability is not so important for me: I find very easy to adapt myself to other basses... Can this bass(L2000) solve the prob or what should I do?
@DudeAndHisBass32 - This is not a subtle bass with roundwounds, but like anything, eq, string choice, amp choice, technique... all variable. If you like the MM tone, this bass won't do it for you. It's a different instrument. If you like G&L, I think this bass would make you very happy. I can't make the decision for you. Better to go out and play them and then decide.
@BassGuitarMag ironically i see people claiming this bass can sound like a ray, jazz and precision all in one.. to my ear on here this sounds alot closer to a ray than most other basses in this style.
@youknowyourrite1 I think people would say that just because the electronics offer so many varieties of tone. Almost too much. I don't think its easy to pull up just any tone, you have to mess with it a lot and really get to know the controls, but anyways the options are there. And yeah, I would say this is closest to a MM bass, and quite a lot cheaper.
Nice thorough review of this bass. This L-2000 is a versatile bass, many tonal options. I have an old 81 version of this bass, sounds so good, I seldom use it in active mode.
Hey ed, what do you think about G&L JB2? what's the different between this bass n L-2000 series? and which one is better according to your opinion? thx ed..
@funkeety - NIce bass, totally different animal from the L2000. Can't say which one is "better". Both great basses with different tones. Check out my review of the JB Rustic, you'll hear the difference. You want a passive Jazz bass, or an active monster with two humbuckers? Make your decision based on tone and feel, not what I (or anyone) says.
@BassGuitarMag Sorry to jump into the convo. But do you think I can get a Wal like tone out if this bass. I would like a Justin Chancellor tone from TOOL but I'm not even going to look at wal's lol
@hiephoi058 - Quality wise, I think the G&L is a step up from the CV, the electronics are the same as the US models - at least they were when I reviewed his bass. But the main reason to choose one over the other is the sound. They sound nothing alike.
I think to love this bass, one must jump out from the preceptional preference of vintage tones-it's almost impossible to sound like a j or Stingray, thou the P is fairly easy to mock. It's got its unique sounds, and they are not as conventional as other classic bass sound which have been widely adopted through all pop music genre. To me, it is a love and hate relationship. I wonder if other owners share the same view with me.
I keep coming back to this video, and rembember how it influenced me to buy an US made L2000. Actually I agree the saying 'it's all in one's hands.' but to start them all, it's safe to begin on a well built platform. To be honest this model would give you a bunch of choices of tone, good playability, solid quality. But to put it head to head along EBMM,Fender,Warwick or other basses, the tone comparasions are left to personal tastes.
How do you like the 2x12 cab? I've been wanting to get into bass amps. I'd like to offer a bass cab but most guys have been telling me12's are not the best bass speakers?? A 2x12 is more affordable for me to build than a 4x10. Any ideas on speaker brands and types? I'm thinking you may know a little about the subject. lol THX
nice chops, one thing tough.you said lets get back to some slapping and then you started with the intro to a Larry graham song called (TURN IT OUT)-from the album My Radio sure sounds good to me 1978. Larry Graham is the Father of this style of playing and he called it (Thumping &Pluckin) respectively a lot of young bass players on you tube are getting the wrong information (IT IS NOT CALLED SLAP BASS. Larry has been Thunpin on his recordings since (1969 with Sly And The Stone
@blueman2bass - You're splitting hairs. It's the same thing. He calls it Thumpin & Pluckin'. I (and most everyone else) call it slapping. Who cares? I certainly know who Larry Graham is, and while he invented the style, it seems everyone still calls it slapping. Bottom line, different name for the same thing. Do you play electric bass, or bass guitar? Same thing - different name. If you knew what I was referring to when I said "slapping", I think the young players on YT are safe.
I fucking love this bass, Ever since i ditched my old Ibanez I've never looked back. I first acquired this bass from a used shop awhile back with no previous knowledge of G&L. I was impressed, giving me all the tones i needed for my band. If you need a new bass but are lowish on cash, give this bass a try!
Hey great vid but I gotta a question : would you you recommend it as a blues bass or if not waht would you recommend as a blues bass in that price range ?
I am deciding between the tribute L2000 and a Sterling by Music Man SB14 Played both -both are great for slap. in your opinion which way to go if you want a deep smooth tone for jazz or blues.
@terryw5 - You might want the front pickup of the L2000 for a "deep smooth tone". The SB14 can do it, but the neck pickup on the G&L gives you a deeper tone.
@BassGuitarMag the neck pickup is hotter, if u want a smoother jazz tone put the pickup selector in the middle using both pickups, a nice tone that kinda scoops the mids. u just dont have those options with the SB14.
@kirbiak90ZX u know what my mistake, i just watched the review on the SB14, i must have been thinkin of another bass :/ u do have those options but as an owner of an L2500 Tribute G&L bass im kinda biased lol, i LOVE the tonal options with this monster-i cant believe its actually legal to make an instrument as qualified as his one at this price!! i got mine for abt 700bucks
Theres a Japanese made one in my local store. Are they as good as the U.S ones? It seems to have been made very good only does it have the same pickups & preamp ? Its is a G&L Tribute bass MIJ.After seeing this vid i think im going to go & get it.Till now ive been using Lytes & Zones & i think they are great basses too.
@Pinstripedtie - I'd say the sound is extremely similar to the US. The Tributes feel and sound pretty amazing for their price range, and beyond. The US stuff though.... uses higher grade woods.
@BassGuitarMag Ok, Thanks! But I did find out today through a G&L dealer that the USA basses are lighter in weight. The Tributes are over 10 pounds and the USA basses are around 8-8.5 pounds. I am older and cannot have a 10 pound bass strapped over my shoulder any more. So I guess I have to fork out a bit more cash to get a USA bass.
hi ed, have you ever tried a g&l jb-2 tribute? i wonder what is their different, in sound and feeling, and which one should i choose. i usually play metal, funk and jazz.
hi ed, have you ever tried a g&l jb-2 tribute? i wonder what is their different, in sound and feeling, and which one should i choose. i usually play metal, funk and jazz.
wow the tone options are crazy, almost overwhelming! I love your demos too, you get into the sound and don't spend too much time on what people can look up themselves.
you said, an instrument thats made that well. I bought an G&L Tribute L2000 Bass, but I have a problem. The potis crack and 2 toggles make a click-sound when I switch them.
@borcemiovski - The GBE 1200 has 1200 watts into 2ohms, 1000 into 4ohms, and...750 (I think) into 8ohms. That cab is 4ohms, so it was using 1000watts.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
for me tone is more about how you pluck and express the note more than anything and if anything i can get BETTER sounds but dont worry that doesnt mean YOU are retarded, just that i am better than you. thanks
@grazer770 - Uh, yeah. Thanks, good to know that I'm NOT retarded. And so happy to know that you are better than me. I was beginning to worry that perhaps no one was.
@BassGuitarMag You're obviously not a bass player, for no two basses sound the same. Please, don't watch these videos if you think all basses are similar to each other, cos then reviews are obviously futile.
@grazer770 Dude, Really? You can get the same type of quality sound from a bass that's 5x cheaper than this bass? Wow, you must be God's gift to bass. How is it I've never heard of you? What group do you play in?
@grazer770, my friend, stop hearing this reviews over the speakers of Your Notebook. Because if You do so, You can´t hear the differences in sound, everything sounds the same. I am watching this reviews over a 2.1-Subwoofer-system. This gives me a much better idea of the different sounds of different bass guitars. And stop annoying people without having an idea of the subject...
@grazer770 Oh, its up to You. In my opinion You don´t. Let´s say, You have Your sight, I have mine. You are wellcome to leave it in this way. At first try to find the "Shift" - button on the keyboard of Your Notebook to write propper... Then again try to bark with the big dogs. Somebody who uses axes worth 99 bucks is either a scoolboy spending his pocket money (No problems with that!) or somebody born without the sense of hearing a musiccian uses to have. Believe me, there i s a difference.
@The1Kong but that is the thing, i do have a good sense of tone and never said there was NOT a difference . to me price and tone do not nessecceraly go together (of course the guitar sellers want you to believe that that is ALWAYS the case.) HOW you play is just as important to produce a good tone.
@BassGuitarMag The prices are amazing these days. I bought my L-2000 in 1985 for $750 (still have receipt). The transparent blue is now teal from age. Great bass!
@grazer770 dude, stop talking shit. You know nothing about bass if you think a £99 bass can get this tone. If that were the case then there would be no market for new basses, you retard.
@grazer770 Don't take me wrong but you're not a bass player if you say that all basses have the same sound. And specially this killer slap sound. But if you say that, well prove it and show me your video, cause i really want to save some money.
@grazer770 dude, if you're a legit bass player, you could easily tell the difference between many different basses. Good luck telling anybody you can get a cheap bass to sound the same as a Rick, Fender, AND a Music Man at the same time. Also, if you're so good, why don't you work at Bass Guitar mag? Be the new Bass Whisperer! CLEARLY Ed is nowhere good enough to play bass.
@grazer770 HAHAHAA! If you can't recognize the difference between a quality instrument then you're either an amateur or you're fooling yourself. Of course there are some cheap little gems out there but to be so cut and dry is just moronic. Go play a washtub Bass.
@BassistBob81 oh dear, am sorry to hear you all feel that way. maybe youtube should stop people from being able to leave comments. i only watched this video because it popped up on my screen "demanding" to be looked at. and as i play bass well...... anyway how the fuck can you all hear how good it is with this poor quality sound recording!
To all the haters. I own the L2500 Tribute. I run it through a GK1001RBII and GK Neo412 cab. I play in a melodic-style metal band, and after each and every single show, I get asked or get adoring comments on my tone. These Tributes are just downright amazing instruments. I leave my pedalboard at home and run straight. Trust me, you will NOT regret owning a G&L Tribute bass.
This Bass is amazing... before buying it I was trying out all kinds of high end fender bass guitars that cost atleast double than the G&L, and I preferd the G&L.
Great sound, very versatile, love the feel of the neck.. and not to mention how HOT looking it is, especially the maple body colour...
I bought this bass about 6 months ago...a very good investment. I'm 20 and in school, so I don't have a lot of cash to drop on basses, but I'm very glad I stumbled on this. I got it used, and it might have well been brand new. Plays very well at gigs, band practice, or just layed back jams. Sounds great with any stye: Funk, jazz, blues, anything. Reccomended by me for anyone who can't spend too much money but wants lots of bang for their buck....sexy ass hell too!
Hello ED! I am looking for the best e-bass (max.600 dollars) for a cover/party band. What would you recommend? G&L L2000 or Yamaha BB614 or another? Thanks for help!
The G&L is great, also check out the Sterling By Music Man SB14 or Ray 34, and the Fender Standard Jazz or Precision. I don't know the Yamaha BB614, but they do make good stuff, so that's probably a good choice too. I can;t tell you which to buy, you should try them all, or at least listen and watch videos to see which sounds the most like what you want.
Hey, Ed. Love all the demos. You said the quality was, "pretty damned good." I don't doubt that at all. My question is if the fit, finish, craftsmanship, etc. on the USA models really worth that much more dough. Finding one of each in my part of the country for comparison is tough. Thanks!
The Tributes are put together very well fit and finish-wise. Where you're going to see the big difference is in the grade of the materials. The US stuff uses higher grade wood, though the electronics and hardware were identical (at least they were when I reviewed this one).
I just got this bass a day or two ago, and its amazing, my only questions are what does the series/parallel switch do, and what does the active switch all the down do?
@GruesomeGertie ..Fuck off. It's slap bass you jealous cock-head.
Wiilly97 2 weeks ago
Pure bass wankery that intro. No need to show off like that in ANY type of music.

It seems that the bass shown in the video is a USA model and not a Tribute.
The Blueburst Tribute has a Maple neck, not a Rosewood one. Go to G&L website to check that

I always loved the deep sound this bass can produce, and finally today I was able to bring that sound to a recording.
iliachulsky 8 months ago
@iliachulsky yes, there are a few things you should look at. 1. Pickup height. This can be adjusted. Then, if they are the correct height, you should compare your slap volume to your fingerstyle volume. If your slap is much louder, you are just hitting the strings too hard. Volume comes from your amp, not how hard you hit the strings, let your amp do the work and pay attention to the different dynamics between slap and fingerstyle.

But to put it head to head along EBMM,Fender,Warwick or other basses, the tone comparasions are left to personal tastes.

which kind of strings did you use for that video? Thanks a lot for the information.

Larry has been Thunpin on his recordings since (1969 with Sly And The Stone
blueman2bass 1 year ago
@blueman2bass - You're splitting hairs. It's the same thing. He calls it Thumpin & Pluckin'. I (and most everyone else) call it slapping. Who cares? I certainly know who Larry Graham is, and while he invented the style, it seems everyone still calls it slapping. Bottom line, different name for the same thing. Do you play electric bass, or bass guitar? Same thing - different name. If you knew what I was referring to when I said "slapping", I think the young players on YT are safe.

I was impressed, giving me all the tones i needed for my band. If you need a new bass but are lowish on cash, give this bass a try!

BassGuitarMag 1 year ago
I am deciding between the tribute L2000 and a Sterling by Music Man SB14 Played both -both are great for slap. in your opinion which way to go if you want a deep smooth tone for jazz or blues.
terryw5 1 year ago
@terryw5 - You might want the front pickup of the L2000 for a "deep smooth tone". The SB14 can do it, but the neck pickup on the G&L gives you a deeper tone.
BassGuitarMag 1 year ago
@BassGuitarMag the neck pickup is hotter, if u want a smoother jazz tone put the pickup selector in the middle using both pickups, a nice tone that kinda scoops the mids. u just dont have those options with the SB14.
kirbiak90ZX 1 year ago
@kirbiak90ZX u know what my mistake, i just watched the review on the SB14, i must have been thinkin of another bass :/ u do have those options but as an owner of an L2500 Tribute G&L bass im kinda biased lol, i LOVE the tonal options with this monster-i cant believe its actually legal to make an instrument as qualified as his one at this price!! i got mine for abt 700bucks

Theres a Japanese made one in my local store. Are they as good as the U.S ones? It seems to have been made very good only does it have the same pickups & preamp ? How would you compare the sound of this bass to the USA bass? I actually like 5 string basses better though. Thx
Pinstripedtie 1 year ago
@Pinstripedtie - I'd say the sound is extremely similar to the US. The Tributes feel and sound pretty amazing for their price range, and beyond. The US stuff though.... uses higher grade woods.
BassGuitarMag 1 year ago
@BassGuitarMag Ok, Thanks! But I did find out today through a G&L dealer that the USA basses are lighter in weight. The Tributes are over 10 pounds and the USA basses are around 8-8.5 pounds. I am older and cannot have a 10 pound bass strapped over my shoulder any more. So I guess I have to fork out a bit more cash to get a USA bass.

The1Kong 10 months ago
@The1Kong but that is the thing, i do have a good sense of tone and never said there was NOT a difference . to me price and tone do not nessecceraly go together (of course the guitar sellers want you to believe that that is ALWAYS the case.) HOW you play is just as important to produce a good tone.

@grazer770 Don't take me wrong but you're not a bass player if you say that all basses have the same sound. And specially this killer slap sound. But if you say that, well prove it and show me your video, cause i really want to save some money.
Pcapelas 1 year ago

I got it used, and it might have well been brand new. Plays very well at gigs, band practice, or just layed back jams. Sounds great with any stye: Funk, jazz, blues, anything. Hello ED! I am looking for the best e-bass (max.600 dollars) for a cover/party band. What would you recommend? G&L L2000 or Yamaha BB614 or another? Thanks for help!
plerimest 2 years ago

Thanks!
buffalobillh 2 years ago
The Tributes are put together very well fit and finish-wise. Where you're going to see the big difference is in the grade of the materials. The US stuff uses higher grade wood, though the electronics and hardware were identical (at least they were when I reviewed this one).
