It's how most long running series with a single progressive storyline works. It's not episodic like some shows where each episode begins and ends a mini-story; and each episode wraps everything up.

I just noticed...a lot of the characters from this show sound like some of the voice actors from Bleach- I think the blonde chick's Voice actor is Michelle Ruff-Who voices Rukia Kuchiki,Shiki's voice sounds like Toshiro Hitsugaya's voice actor ,Young shiki's voice actor sounds like Tatsuki and young Ichigo,& Shiki's father ( i'm guessing it was his father that spoke in the beggining of ep 1) sounds like Souken Ishida also from Bleach!
