Ok, what I have to say ONLY applies to street fights. In a real fight, this is literally the worst possible thing you can do. You are guaranteed to get kicked in the groin successfully against anyone with the concept of using the lead leg as a weapon. Can't possibly stress it enough. That's all.
I love videos like this teaching ortho guys how to deal with southpaws. Why? Because I am a southpaw, and it's great when I see everyone you using strategies like this against me. Here's the deal, as a SP, I too have been taught to stay to the outside, but it's crap; I circle to the INSIDE because I know that draws out your rights. When Ido that, takes away the surprise of when they come and I can counter better. Try it, with timing. You'll do better than the old circle to the outside method.
it really sound like he's like um, um um um i dont really know what the hell im really doing. But this should work. The only way to fight a southpaw is to fight southpaws. Learn to fence.
Check it out. Our student Curtis Johnson works an Omoplata, Kensei Sato puts together a nice combination and Sterling Nitsuma and Dan Berry use these fundamentals to KO their opponents in this clip:

Some people might complain about how simple the straight right and basic theory is, but you can't beat the fundamentals. KISS
What foot do I place Inside or outside if I am Boxing a right hander or if its two lefties who puts what foot where ?
I bet these questions mess with your mind !
The whole thing about ALWAYS KEEP YOUR FOOT OUTSIDE THE SOUTHPAW is WRONG ... How do you cut the ring on a fighter if you always keep your foot in the same place ?
How does latteral movement work for you with this SOUTHPAW reciept for disaster ? How long before the Southpaw figures you out if you ALWAYS KEEP ANYTHING ?
The reason why southpaw usually likes to step on the outside of their opponent is because it makes them easier to jab over their opponent's guard and it makes it easier to land their straight left. Southpaws really likes that so if you try to step on the outside, they'll immediately try to step further out so you can sometimes fake stepping out and go in when they try to step out and start brawling from the inside which is what worked for me.
It's not as easy as sidestepping, it never is. A decent, even a bad southpaw, will know to use the right jab to set up the left hook. Yes, stepping outside is key, but that applies to orthodox as well. You should have mentioned that a strong jab + right cross combo will definitely leave the southpaw guessing.
@PrisonCipher your right i fight southpaw against other southpaws and inexperienced orthodox and i have good feet work so either my lead foot is outside or even and give them right hooks and right jabs and right uppercuts and they dont know what to do and i love setting up my powerful left hooks and uppercuts my left jab is my weakness only reason why i favor the southpaw but i do fairly well fighting on the outside with orthodox
In my opinion, the introduction for the video is like a cover of a book. Personally I haven't paid much attention to the introduction because I'm more interested in the actual subject of the video. :P
The information, while good, seemed kind of... stretched out, I suppose. Great info, just not a lot of info for 7 minutes of video, I suppose.
Anyhoo, love the stuff. Intro-logo was better before... oddly, as I look through your videos, I'm noting more and more of THIS version (so perhaps I was hallucinating the other version...) so... perhaps disregard the memory and take the suggestion instead...?
This approach seems fundamentally flawed. As a dynamic position, sure, have your lead foot on the outside. As a static position? You'd be placing his lead foot between your legs and that just seems like an excuse to get kicked in the groin. Tbh, this video caused me to lose some faith in the instructors on this channel.
@horizontal yes, but will you really be able to react in time? The distance from his foot to your groin is crazy short. I wouldn't bet on being able to protect your groin in time from such a straight movement on so short a distance.
I'm a huge fan of your material, videos, and presentation methods. I found this particular video, while informative, not up to snuff of your usual content or presentation. Stressed?
@ShinkaTV, interesting comments. I'm not sure what you mean by "the old intro audio". Could you maybe go into more detail? We like to make improvements where we can. Sorry this video didn't meet your expectations. Maybe the other 3 free videos on the subject will be more to your satisfaction. You can see them as well as read a breif article on the topic at DamageControlMMA,com/how-to-fight-a-southpaw/
@TakingItToTheMMAT The audio intro at the beginning where the female says damage control after the SFX. The SFX of the typing is different than the other videos. Minor.
In regards to the rest of the video, the information was good, I just felt that the presentation of it wasn't up to the usual snuff of the others. Your videos are awesome, please keep making them. To clarify the critique, I would say that... hm, hold on, need more space
@TakingItToTheMMAT hey thanks, - its difficult sometimes to be as polite as I'd like to be and still give all the necessary info, (char lim) so: "old audio" I remember an old version where the "bullet noise" hits around the time of the "am" (in Damage) and it flowed nicer, making the typewriter sounds less necessary/slow.
The videos are free, and ergo, I'm happy with whatever we get (always great info) my critique was in regards to the presentation. Video is about 7min long and "step to left"
im lucky i can fight southpaw and orto
