I'm always amazed when I see things like homes and businesses abandoned, but this just takes the cake. A whole island? Granted, life there sounds like it was absolute hell, but I can't imagine there being NO way to make something out of that place after Japan got out of the coal business.

Gunkanjima is actually in way worse shape than the video might make it look like. Balconies and steps are crumbling away, the whole island is one big death trap... Nevertheless I'd sign a waiver at any time and explore the place on my own risk.
