First of all, thanks for this vid. I just started learning the piano two months ago and part of this song was in one of the learning videos I'm watching and I felt inspired to learn the whole thing, and your video definitely helped. But I gotta ask you one thing: if you're using the sustain pedal, which you have to to hold the bass notes, then why, at :26, for example, do you make a point of holding down the F sharp? Won't it keep sounding even if you release the key? Thanks!
@SergioPOE I know its a bit late but its truly personal preference. He (and myself, I'm learning this piece at the moment!) holds the note so that, when the left takes the chord you're not actually playing the F# (or G minor, can't remember) repeatedly. You would have to consciously ignore the note when the left hand chord is played, as many tend not to play that note each time the left hand comes up (I think its in the sheet music aswell). Its just to stop it being hit too much.
@SergioPOE Because instead what you get is the sustained note held over 2 chords while the rest of the chord is being played. Although now that I look over the video again it appears he's not doing what I'm doing, haha. You 'might' want to ignore me :D
Am I the only one who goes into a trance when playing this song? I forget all the notes and I don't know what I am staring at when I look at the piano sheet. But great playing anyway. ^^
This song is so good that the word good is not even the word to describe it its beyond anything else. It pears your heart like nothing else. It makes you calm and fresh
Divine.... and the mouse slided gently and unattended on the loudspeaker icon... and it popped up; "switch off sound" ..... I won't use that functionallity now ;-)
Oh, mr. serious over here. Not a Star Trek fan huh? Well I learned of this piece from an episode of that show so maybe a little respect for the trek, k bud?
@Wisdombluetooth i wasn't being dumb nor insensitive just being grateful that i was put in this earth with all of my senses or i wouldn't be able to listen to this type of music. i never made fun of the deaf nor did i insult them in any way.
@Wisdombluetooth I'm happy and glad to realize when someone is just making a comment about the joys of hearing, but instead someone idiot thinks he's being insensitive to those who are deaf/hard of hearing and feels the compulsive need to call that person out and make him feel bad just because they think that person was being mean, just so they can show the world that they are a good person and is willing to call out "mean" people and "stop" the hate. Feel better now about yourself?
@hardcorelifeforus000 Me neither :) I don't think I could live without hearing the essence of music; music is a beautiful thing...That no one should ever miss the chance of hearing and experiencing its emotions ^^
i agree with the top commenter... this song sounds way too major-tonality-happy to me even though it's not... probably from listening to gnossiene no1 & 3 so much
i remember hearing this the first time when I was in 7th grade, I could never find it again and I began to think I made it up in my head. this was 1997 so no internet.
It wasn't until Janet Jackson's - Someone to call my lover (2001), that I knew it wasn't just in my head. To bad all avenues led to America - Ventura highway.. So I recorded it on my mini disk (remember those) and searched for 6 more years!
Songs only this powerful can take you on adventures... Does anyone share a similar story?
@dirty7black7boy7 I first heard it through Blood Sweat and Tears, who did a great version back in the 70s I think. Then when I inherited my grandmother's piano recently I decided that this would be the first piece I would begin practicing. I found this version, which is perfect for learning, and then I began searching for other Satie pieces and learned more about him. The gymnopaedies and gnossiemes have become favored piano pieces.
to all who say this song is too simple to be appreciated ( probably the 175 haters ) ...quiet. What ive learned in life is that if its beautiful, no matter how simple, it is to be acknowledged as so.

hey my friend, the best past about your song, and there a lot of best parts, is that you leave us with a light continuation of the circle, which allows us to continue filling it in even after the silence sets. other versions are good as well, and i dont mean to place qualifiers on music, but i prefer yours.
Bravo! Meraviglia.
