  • In person, she is also flawless! An American Treasure.

  • In the top of my favourites !!

  • A voice that is pure Americana with the subtleness of Appalachia Celctic heritage seeping through. Kudos to those who enjoy her voice and her style; it takes a person having a wide music appreciation and a connection with American history.

  • Such sweet sweet simpicity...

  • She sings so Newfie!

  • Absolutely beautiful voice, music, song. A pleasure to listen to.

  • love IRIS and her voice - what a sweetie!!!!!

  • I pressed dislike by mistake. I really like this a lot.

  • @Frightwolf did Iris go to High School with you and steal your boyfriend, lead role in the play, prom queen crown, and cheer captain spot away from you? Was she your roommate and she kept eating your leftovers? Did she sell you a car with a nest of mice in the trunk? GET OVER IT! MOVE ON!

  • If she sang at my church I would never miss a Sunday, I love to hear Iris sing.

  • Absolutely superb,as always,i cant believe some of the negativity on here, some people just aint got no soul.

  • @FrightwoIf God may forgive you but I won't

  • AWESOME SOOTHING TUNE!!THNX FOR UPLOAD!!!!(:-)))))

  • thanks for this, I'm off to Amazon.......

  • Dave here. Sorry, folks, but Iris' voice is just a little too highly pitched for my taste. She sounds better singing "Our Town." If I didn't know what she looks like, I'd imagine the singer to be a little old lady. She plays the piano well, though, as well as the guitar. As they say, "Two out of three ain't bad."

  • Does she sing these hymns as folk songs or as a believer? Either way is ok by me.

  • Sorry, I meant DVD ... 2006/7!

  • The much underrated Iris Dement comes to Transatlantic Sessions again ... and rightly so, she is a great singer, a real talent and one to be cherished. This is from Transatlantic Sessions 3 (available on DCD) and repeated ad nauseum on BBC4 (great!)

  • Anyone know what kind of accordian that is?

  • great voice and player in this video. better lyrics and message - essence of christianity

  • Love her voice

  • Jerry Douglas and Iris Dement randomly sitting in a living room playing beautiful music-gotta love it

  • Her music helped me through some hard times in my life. And I don't think I'll ever be able to put my finger on it, which is strange, but it brought me back to where I should be in my head.

  • Her rendition of "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms" that is heard at the end of "True Grit" is one of the most powerful songs I have ever heard.

  • Because Douglas has a great manager.

  • why is jerry douglas in everything!!!!

  • @PresidentJones because he's a very, very good dobro guitar player. And lots of other musicians know it. So when they want some dobro on their recording, they call for him first.

  • Fantastic

  • @justlilyanne The Beauty is in the song and the person not if their voice is perfect pitch. Otherwise Hank Williams, Lester Flatts, Robert Plant, etc would be on your obviously extensive list of singers.

  • @justlilyanne Stay away from Iris's posts. No one makes you listen, and no one wants your ill-formed, ugly opinions.

  • @justlilyanne She sings better than you can ever know.

  • Thank you for sharing. That really spoke to my heart. Our Christian radio stations stick to contemporary, pop, rock, and praise and worship. Although they play great music, we miss out on other great music of different genre, such as this one.

  • For some reason, I had never HEARD of Iris Dement until tonight. She is a CLASSIC. Absolutely brilliant. A naturally gifted musician, with a voice that sends a “frisson" down my cheek. Wonderful group too. And the song is absolutely beautiful. Thanks to all responsible for allowing this wonderful singer into my house and into my heart.

  • What a faboulous song and artist! Never heard of Iris until tonight, but thanks to tomtscotland - now I do! Super!

  • Recorded a lil way from me!! The music blew me away!

  • awesome voice love to hear her sing some of kitty/s stuff

  • i just love Iris. Discovered her fairly recently and have just been devouring everything I can find! I have not been able to find a current link for contact info to find about concerts that may be added to the ones already posted for this year. Does anyone have any info?

  • Love this. Iris is a true gem. Hoping she returns with a new album before too long (it's already been too long!).

  • I agree Derrick

  • The specialist said "You've got to have the operation - this condition never gets better".

But people prayed, and He reached down - praise the Name of Jesus!

  • what a voice, fantastic

  • everytime i hear this song aaaaaaaaaaaaaah i dont even know

  • That piano reminded me of Sunday school when I was a boy. Nice to come across something by Iris I've not heard before,

  • What a distintive voice! I could could pick it out of a million others. Such pain and agony in her singing and expressions. I very much underated treasure. I love her to bits.xxx

  • You are a true treasure Iris....

  • Just a brilliant singer

  • Just love Iris. great song lyrics and message. God bless you girl, go ahead sang!

  • Joan Osborne.......sigh

  • The point of the comment is that I wouldn't generally care for Joan Osborne, a different type than my usual taste, but she did a great job on this one. Iris doesn't usually need any help but Joan added to the effort. Does that help you out? Is it wrong for me to express an opinion? Comrade?

  • I wouldn't normally care for Joan Osborne that much but she does a GREAT job here with Iris.

  • What is the point of the comment? "Joan did great" would have done nicely.

  • Just love Iris. You just can't get any more honest and true. Could listen to it all day. Never heard this one.

  • wow........... outstanding!!

  • Gosh I love her...always have.. wish I could sit on a front porch with her and just listen to them all sing and play.. sigh..

  • Do not really understand you. Someone paraphrases the Bible and you ridicule them. Went to your site and found that you are interested in the Bible. Perhaps you should read the Bible more and not ridicule others who promote good deeds and celebrate what Jesus said and did. Many of the words in the song are from the Bible. The intent of the song definitely is from the Bible. Sad to think of you as somehow promoting the Bible while being insulting. Great song and post.

  • Thanks for this. I've been trying to remember what this song was called since I first heard it about 18 months. Brilliant. I LOVE IRIS

  • Iris Dement. She is always great.

  • FOLKNEVERDIES : WHAT A SINGER WHAT A BAND WHAT A SONG ..i can here this over and over and get touched deep everytime....timeless

  • This sound is God's answer to rap music, and Iris is surely God's favorite angel!

  • She ain't no hippie. From Arkansas and grew up in Cypress CA--not exactly Haight-Ashbury! So what's your point, youngster!

  • She's the kinda gal every father hopes his son will marry...

  • ...are better than talentless young farts.

  • Iris is one of a kind.

I wonder if the paparazzi follow her to the circle K?........nah...just kiddin...........the world misses most of the good stuff.

  • No one, and I mean no one can sound like Iris. She has the voice of an angel. Simply amazing, there are no other words to describe it. Thanks for posting this!

  • Loved it. My son turned me on to her a while back

  • There are a lot of beautiful numbers on The Transatlantic Sessions. Wish I saw them all.

Is there anybody who can telle me if they're for sale. (I live in The Netherlands)

    Thanks for posting this music.

  • Iris always appears astounded by both her talent and the wonders of her world. There is an innocence in her interpretations which we should all seek out in this time of pandering to the lowest common denominator.

  • what a song one of many Iris brings alive with her voice and passion and her writing .

  • Super Great Again and Again I come back to see this...Iris is Top Top Honest and Jammin..

  • I can't stop listening to it.

  • Fantastic 5+Star video! :c)

    Great share, Amber! :c)

Very best wishes for health and happiness!

    GinMillBill

  • I believe The Lord laid this song on Iris to write. This is such a wonderfully true song.

If anyone thinks The Bible story of The Good Samaritan isn't relevant today, you could'nt be more wrong. Jesus said neither do I condemn thee...Go and sin no more. He reaches down, picks us up, and cleans us up. Gives us a second chance over and over again. "Religion" condemns and imprisons, The Love of Jesus makes us free indeed.

Great song. Thanks for posting it. Thanks to Iris for writing it.

  • Iris definitely has a one of a kind voice. Good job!

  • She sounds like nobody else. Iris always sings from the heart, with sincerity and unique style.

  • Wow what more can i say

  • Davidchadfish says it so well! Not since Patsy Kline, perhaps, has country music had so heavenly a voice. Yet in Iris there is a sincerity, intelligence, and sublimity beyond even Patsy. Don't miss "Sweet Is the Melody" on the Transatlantic Sessions, here on Youtube. Just heart-breakingly beautiful.

  • Dement is a sublime and serious person whose sweetly dumb shit voice penetrates the cheap armor of my stupid, cynical heart.

  • Lol! Never heard it put that way.

  • What a brilliant way of describing the depth of simplicity found in Iris' voice. It makes me yearn for my childhood and the sound of Dad and Mom's voices singing in harmony. It brings peace to my cynical, hard old heart. Thanks for your comment molloyx! I always thought she sounded like Olive Oyl if Olive had been a singer of songs....But don't take me wrong, I love Iris Dement.

  • Daniel. Thanks for overlooking my choice of words and at the same getting the soul of my appreciation for her music and presence. I am an unashamed agnostic and so find this exquisite lament all the more touching.

  • I can respect and appreciate an agnostic, whom to my understanding has doubts about whether there is a God or not. Far more than an atheist who says there is "absolutely not." I truly appreciate your honest and heartfelt critique. I feel that God is in all of us in so many ways. I am an unashamed believer who does'nt call myself a "Christian" . In spite of this, we seem to be on the same page Friend. Bless You!

  • Wonderful song from "Lifeline" - written by Iris DeMent.

That albums transcends religion and tells me of values of kindness, community, friendship and hope.

  • Ally Bain sure plays a mean fiddle and it looks like hois twin brother is playing the dobro.

  • Its Jerry Douglas...

  • I was raised on this type of music. Just found out about Iris Demint a few years ago, and really enjoy her singing.

  • I really love this lady!

  • Just saw Iris at the Getty Center in LA. Took wife who was a sceptic of her being this awesome, Knew we had her hooked when I looked over and there were tears streaming down my wifes face. Iris we love you, great conduit and expressor of what all of us feel but cannot voice and you do that!!! thanks!!

  • it's Tuesday here on Magnolia Ridge, and the message of this song touches me too. Thanks for the post, and long live the voice and the messenger, that is Iris Dement!

  • her voice only matures, she sounds better now than ever.

  • It's Sunday in Harrisburg, and this is the best sermon and the best lesson I could hope for - bless Iris Dement and many thanks for the posting.

  • And I had always thought that Country music was awful.

    Shame on me.

    Paul.

  • As always Iris is brilliant!!! Anyone know what year this video was recorded?

  • Recorded January this year. Is on DVD Transatlantic Sessions 3.

  • Thank you...This is the most recent recording that I have seen...

  • As always "OUTSTANDING"...Through out the years Iris is top quality...

  • Very unique and beautiful singing of a lovely song.

  • We love you in Minnesota, Iris! Come here and perform!

  • American music of this quality is both rare and insistent...certain to be heard eventually and so equal to its spiritual task.

  • Exquisite.

  • Joan Baez and Steve Earle should put this on their upcoming lp.

  • Iris is beautiful inside and out, and she sings like an angel! What a lovely song!

  • I wonder if you are so HOT yourself. It is sad that women are judged by whether they conform to present day norms. Iris is aging in the normal way and that is beautiful. Aging is natural for us all. Yes...even you!!

  • LOL if you are under 30, I feel sorry for you that you are one of the poor children who are still been socialized to see humans as objects to be exploited. I call attention to this behaviour but I am under no illusion that following will ever change. Being older than you, I know that norms change. In the 1900s, there was Marilyn Monroe and then Twiggy. Men lusted after them both because they were told to do so, not because there was anything rational associated with the feelings.

  • why the back of the head.....i don't get it?....just trying to be funny?..or tough?..or cool...well three strikes and your out...you are not any of those.

    peace

  • good music you feel with the heart and hear with the ears. It's not about "looking" like anything. When your older (assuming someone doesn't kill your stupid ass) you'll understand.

  • oh by the way,

    peace..

  • gotta love it when a plan comes together...

  • your kidding, right??

    Peace

  • Does anyone know the guitar version of this song?

  • Hi: I tried to find the lyrics and I couldn't find it...Can someone send me a link where I can read it? Thanks

  • This is from a Gospel lp she released a couple yrears ago, she worote it.

  • Unbelievable!! This woman is something else!!!!!

  • This is one of the Best songs ever! Awesome message to all of us and sung beautifully and fantastic old-time instruments. thanks a bunch, Iris

  • Iris is the Balm of Gilead! I Love Iris!

  • A somewhat strange pairing. Great song though, and well sung.

  • Music from the heart, from the soul. Reaching out to aching hearts and lonely souls around the world. This is the genuine article, the ral deal, "good to eat a thousand years".

  • Powerful,Emotional,Marvellous! Is that a tear trickling down the cheek of Aly Bain towards the end of the song? The GREAT Iris Dement, accompanied so well by all the musicians.

  • This is so lovely. And seeing her with Joan Osborne! Wonderful. Thank you, Iris!

  • There's only ONE Iris. Unique,beautiful,heartfelt.
