You know, Joyce's whole message is a call to arms, an incited rebellion and insurrection against fascists and Phillistines like yourself who clearly fail to see the underlying themes of anti-establishment. This can be evinced in the neo-realist undercurrents of the video (i.e. opting to shoot on-location as opposed to a close set, the paucity of trained actors, and the lack of evident production and post-production) The work in itself could be classified as a Dogme 95 film in its low-budgetness.
I can't understand why people of today cannot (or perhaps will not) appreciate greatness when it has been laid out before them in such a raw form as this gem, still fresh from the stone it was carved from. In "Wake Me Up," Joyce breaks convention, cheating directly to the generation-Z masses, heavily critiquing, through his post-modern interpretation of 80's pop and his diatridic irony, so effulvent that it nearly cascades into his liveried plunging neckline.
Actually I think its more post-industrial than post-modern. The distinction is clear in the articulation of the trumpet solo at the terminus of the video.
Your rejoinder articulates well an interpretation I had deigned as peripheral until now. However, the two schools of thought can be married in Joyce's gesticulations on the similtude of "leave me hanging on like a yo-yo." Here, Joyce evokes a manual image of a lasso-like tool which he tosses at the audience, thus breaking the fourth wall and hearkening back to po-mo convention. However, in the crude usage of the yo-yo, Joyce too implements post-industrial imagery. We both win.
