Perkins played his part greatly. Vaughn played his own very well. But I say that original will do better. Original will win first prize and remake will win last prize.
@Maggo1987 IMO, an entire film for an homage is a bit of a waste. What could have been art became nothing more than a colorized photocopy with a miscast Vaughn.
Anne Heche was a horrible choice to play Marion Crane - definitely not as pretty as Janet Leigh nor possessing the acting chops needed to portray the conflicted woman guilty of embezzling 40k out of love.
And Vaughn plays Norman Bates like a creepy lecherous pervert, preventing the audience from sympathizing with him. With two leads so horribly miscast, the Psycho remake was doomed to fail miserably, which it did.
"The most dramatic difference between Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" and Gus Van Sant's shot-by-shot remake is the addition of a masturbation scene. That's appropriate, because this new "Psycho" evokes the real thing in an attempt to re-create remembered passion".
as much as I prefer the old movie in every way, I must say that the other actors in the new version played their parts very well. They took it very seriously, and Vince surprised me.
i think he wasn't against Hitchcock with this. rather it was out of respect for him. and for fun... :) if i had a lot of money, i'd shoot some remakes. e.g. Evita with Michelle Pfeiffer despite of Madonna and so on. it's a good play. but i'm sure it was a respect-thing.

The original shower scene is softer... the remade scene is more apropriate to the present time, when the audience is already very familiar with blood and violence in the screen... I think that if Hitchcock could have seen this remake, he would have been a little jealous, because Gus could do in the 90's what Hitch couldn't never have done in the 60's.... Anyway, to my eyes the remake is better than the original - even if saying this should sound like a heresy to some people...
I saw the Van Sant one first but I like them both. I like the new murder scenes, but I think most of the performances in the 1960 version are better. I really like most of the look of Van Sant's version, it's very photographic. I remember liking Vince Vaughn in this when it came out, but now that I've seen both I think Anthony Perkins is definitely the better Norman. Too bad he wasn't famous yet because I think Lee Pace would have been a WONDERFUL Norman in Van Sant's version.

Gus Van Sant is a genius, fuckin genius, awesome filmmaker... don't judge the poor guy for a terrible mistake like this one. It's like saying Tim Burton is not as extraordinary as he is just because he made "Planet of the Apes", right?
LOVE IT! I think that it is awesome how the remaker's film crew matched the camera angles...to the detail...i love when he is in the doorway! they look the same!
I like the remake shower scene better the hair on the killer looked way cooler

I judge him based on everything I've ever seen by him. It all stinks. Burton used to make awesome and original movies, now, not so much.
