Any chess player wondering what K-9 is talking about, he is using old chess notation that was still used in the 1960s, later on the numeric notation became more popular since it was easier to use. Reason for the long time it took for the general chess player to use numeric notation was that it originated from Russia which means it has to be bad, since it's not american and all.

Nope. 1 dimensional as in only one plane. The chess in Star Trek was considered 3 dimensional because it had three primary planes that the game was played on, even though there were some smaller satellite planes around the main 3. In order for it to be 2 dimensional, the board would have to be on two planes instead of just one.

@SeriousBradTime When I said "the doctor's first move" I didn't mean the first move of the game I meant the first move on the video. Nevertheless, whether it was his first move or not, it still should have been obvious that his king was in check. The idea is that media such as TV shows and films use the game of chess to display characters as intellectuals when really you don't need to have a PhD in order to be a great player. They should at least try to come up with reasonable moves.

The brother of one of my friends used to be a BBC editor in the 70s. He's got a tape of outtakes (which I've seen), one of which is Tom Baker as the Doctor kicking the living sh*t out of the K9 prop, while John Leeson improvises "No Master! Oww!" in the background. Apparently this happened quite a lot, as Tom hated the clunky prop (which kept breaking or not working properly on location) and the cartoonish element that he felt K9 introduced to the series...! As for me, I love K9!
