Thos indonesian necks by squier have gotten better, but they are formed in a humid climate..and they tend to bow., they probably need a roadworn process, so it is hit or miss with them, now if you want and interesting neck try the chinese made squier necks, I see they are putting them on the Fender Brand.... Also I put on my squier jazz vintage jazz modified 70s a squier active v (ebanol neck) ther replacement neck for it wasn't as good..
I'm thinking on getting a mexican 70s neck for it...
This video inspired me to get one of these basses. I liked it so much that I traded in a well loved Fender P Bass standard to get it. This bass plays and sounds fantastic! It is the gem of Squier's product line.
My Modulus Q5 and Burns Bison bass will be collecting some dust for a while as this axe is gig worthy.
Stock strings are good. Setup is medium and good. Tuners stay in tune pretty well. Nut is nice.
Frets are not rolled, but not a deal breaker. Battery compartment is easy to us
@OptoOcto I have found out other differences since I posted that. The other one I was talking about also has a rosewood board, passive instead of active, and stacked volume/tone knobs. Not to mention Duncan-designed pickups. The one with the maple board you're talking about is the Fender Modern Player Jaguar.
@evilelbie i don't know what would make a bass a "starter bass", but i think it's a nice guitar. i'm pretty sure "starter" anything just means it's cheap so you can feel out whatever it is and see if you're interested in pursuing it further, but there are a lot of cheaper basses than this one, and you already own it, so just play the shit out of that fucking thing
Yeah strummer101 go for it but note the s/s version is not the active battery version with 4 knobs it just has the three.Definately good value for the price and get the candy apple red colour like in the vid its a corker:) btw lightweight with a cutaway yet solid definatley not like a toy.
@mitchqqqqqq They're both great basses for the price. I prefer the VM Jaguar over the VM Precision Bass since it comes with a 2-band EQ (more versatility). If you've never owned a bass with active electronics, you'll need to make sure you unplug it, or you WILL drain the battery.
I am new to bass (switching from guitar) and I really love this bass so far with all of the reviews but I was just wondering, I really want this bass to last a long time, so the fact that it only has 20 frets instead of 22-24, will that detract from the usefulness of it?
@McPhersonBassMaster I just recently bought my Ibanez GSR200 and I'm in love with it :) It's got a beautiful tone and naturally very loud. I got it on sale too so it was only 160 but my guitar/bass teacher tells me it plays like a 1600 dollar one :) He's buying one himself.
You Lucky Bastard, I can't even buy THIS bass yet! :P It's going to take me about 5-6 months, seeing as all I do is throw papers, and I plan to get strings and the professional Luthier that lives here in McPherson to work on it.
Hey Owen! New glasses? You look much better - less nerdy. And you've become funny! And you're still a great bassplayer. Love your reviews. YOU SHOULD BECOME THE NEW BASS WHISPERER!!!
Hey Owen! New glasses? You look much better - less nerdy. And you've become funny! And you're still a great bassplayer. Love your reviews. YOU SHOULD BECOME THE NEW BASS WHISPERER!!!
The only thing with Squier indonesian, the necks bow after rainfalls.. the Chinese made necks particularly the vintage 60's...blue sky blue...don't move..
@nexusvision can you provide a little more of your experience on the necks and humidity ? Do ya live in a generally rainy area ? I've got several Squiers and demo'd quite a few before buying I notice the necks are hit or miss. but the ones I have tend to need truss adjustment every now and then ( bowing) and I'm in a dry climate .
Love the Vintage Modified Series (I have the 70's Jazz bass and have been making some additional mods to it) they are truly great basses for the price. And while I hate to nitpick as it could just be the audio quality -does anyone after hearing this feel like the jazz pickup is pulling a lot of the weight? Just curious, maybe it's just me. If I buy this one the I'm already considering a Gotoh high mass bridge, either Nordstrand or Dimarzio pickups, and GHS pressure wound strings.
@ltdbassplayer I just bought this bass and noticed a few things. First off, when combining the jazz & p pickup the jazz takes away a good bit of volume and low. The jazz pickup on its own is very quiet and lacks a little definition IMO. The P pickup is very powerful and gives the expected sound. Overall the bass is fun, but it's a little muddy and the preamp is a little disappointing to me. ;-)
@ltdbassplayer And there ya go ! the mods you are doing will make this bass a killer tone machine, Go Dimarzios . Hard to pinpoint issues with the p/us when your hearing an mp3 or similar crunch audio online. Ck it out in person then you'll have your answers.
@TESTandASET yea it's the same maple neck (satin finish) with rosewood fretboard. Only diff is the black varnish headstock on the short scale version.
A $200 dollar bass with Activie EQ, pretty amazing first bass for some lucky kid. my first bass was a Cort and it was horrible, though later Cort got much better.
Gotta diss on the fact that, as talented as he is, he did not know that the standard bass guitar scale length is 34"; come off as unoprofessionally glib. Also dissing on no mention of the VM Jag standard model, which is passive P/J, and the perfect "bar-beater' bass. I put an aftermarket bridge and straplocks on one, am still under $300 into it, and it positively kills.
Anyone who says that Squiers are shit nowadays should really take a look at the VM/CV lines. Just as good - if not, better - than Fenders. Get 'em quick, before Fender comes to their senses and raises the prices!
Don't you love how all the comments on his guitar reviews are people complaining about how "They can play better, blah blah blah", but the people commenting on the bass reviews actually talk about the bass?
