im saving for a macaw.. which may take up to a year or so depending how much i save but my dad is telling me that im not allowed to get it because people will try and break in to the house to steal it... which isn't fair cause im willing to put all my money and time on this bird. I don't knoww what to do =(
@kwaziibabii I take it you are a teenager, if i were you I would get a cheaper bird, something basic because these birds are really for when you are older and have a couple of decades you can dedicate heaps of time with them. Sometimes when left for a couple of days they pluck themselves because of the stress of being away from you. So once you are living in your own home and have a very stable schedule then get one, but only if you have heaps of free time like hours each day.
Im 18 years old and im really good with pets, I'll be finished with school in less than 8 months which leaves me with some part time work till I get full time work. Ive had experience with hand feeding baby cockatiels and lorrikeets with the spoon. I did have a major mitchel which i also loved very dearly untill my dad thought it wouldnt fly away cause he didnt know how to fly but something frightened him when he was outside with my dad and i was away in wollongong
Which was a shame because that bird grew on me and my dad.. he didnt seem to like anyone else in my family. I do still have my lorikeets infact i caught a tame one that someone else must have lost and he was starving and he actually let me get him so i put him in the same cage with my other bird and was eating for about 2 hrs straight. He didnt like me in the beginning but after spending time and trying to get him used to me he came around.
While I think these babies are adorable.. I disagree with breeding them while there are THOUSANDS of bird rescues all across the US with macaws and other beautiful birds waiting for their forever homes. :\
I wish people would adopt these animals instead. It's low cost, and it gives an animal a second chance. My 3 cats and my cockatiel were all adopted from local shelters, and they are just as good as any animal from a breeder or pet store.
@iluvhorse1234 I hope you understand the commitment and I hope the bird wont be discarded like a toy once the initial excitement wears off after christmas.
@iluvhorse1234 I'm sorry...that really was rude of me. I just see so many comments like that made by people who want an animal as a present. Plus with the movie Rio and all there is a lot of hype still about birds and people only want them because of the movie. I don't know you so if was unfair to just assume.
How are your cabinets not destroyed? Thats all my birds do, just chew any wood they can get their beaks on whether it's their toys of part of my house.
does ayone know when macaws are suppose to stop begging, flicking their wings and croaking "ack", mine is one year and a half now he he does this relentlessly for hours, he especially does it with his foot over his face. he is quite sleepy and aggressive with it.
Normally they stop that when weaned. Usually the begging at an older age is a sign of an infection. I would take him/her to a vet and have it checked. Yeast or bacterial can both cause long term damage and or death if not treated.
@teresasbirds since i've been spending more time with him and interacting with him more, it's been reduced considerably and he's a lot happier. it seems to me like it was behavioural problems.
Free energy is finaly here! But the Establishment doesn't want ppl to know this,Get a motor that works with the power of magnets only at LT-MAGNET-MOTORdotCOM ,The revolution begins!
@mohammedaltab2078 Around 16 weeks old, but you should still hand feed them once every 1-2 week until they are a year old, they bond more to you and it makes them healthy.
Hand-feeding baby macaws more than 16 weeks would never hurt anything, it's good for them.
aww they look so sweet but sound so loud. i have a pair of budgies myself. oscar a yellow and green and azula a blue and white budgie. they both are my babies. bless you for having these three angels.
I think it's great you let people know the huge commitment, it's good to educate, we love them so much and it's very entertaining, but it's hard for some to see past that till it's to late. They are beautiful babies!
You are a very special and kind person to be able to do this for your birds. My parakeet has a set of lungs on him/her that can give me a migraine XD But I lovingly deal with it as best as I can, and I'll never stop loving and being sweet to my baby. I wanted a rose colored Cockitiel, but I imagine they can get Macaw-loud so I'll stick with my lil keet. I swear I picked the noisiest keet I have ever owned/heard of. Anyways, keep on loving birds, you have a gift <3
I dont know how you deal with 3 of them i have my blue and gold jake and im lucky her not a demanding macaw (my m2 is very demanding) but still needs face time. He loves to get feed by a spoon took awhile for him to trust me. But now he loves it.
ohhh man i have a 9 mounth B and G macaw hes great but yeaster day he bit my hand realy hard and i got 2 stickes litte bastard and while i was screaming my head of he was chuckleing hes the best thouh.......at being a bastard!!!!!!!
First do your research on them they are a HUGE commitment. They are messy, loud and demanding. Just weaned is my preference. But as long as you can handle the bird any age is fine. Some second hand birds if you are not easily intimidated make excellent pets.
@teresasbirds I can attest to that. I just got a wonderful B&G from a family who couldn't afford her anymore. She is between 6 and 7 years old (I came to find out from our local "bird lady" lol) but she is an absolut joy and such a sweetheart :-) After 3 weeks at our home we are able to pick her up and put her on her back readily. She's quite the little chatter box too lol! We absolutely love her :-)
@Rideofrohirrim2 yes. They will be your best friend, they live for 100+ years. but in the usa they cost 2000 dollars, and they are very loud and messy lol
Macaws can live up to 80 years or more....My Mom's friend owns one! He speaks dutch, though when went over there to take care of him, he didn't talk to me the only things he would say were Huh? (In Parrot) and Duh-Goodbye in dutch. I want a parrot but I can get a big one because big birds eat little birds and I have two birds at home-Cockateil and Budgie (Budgie light blue & Cockateil Gray). I saw this Macaw on google called Hahn's Macaw or something, big as a Cockateil so I might get it! :D
@teresasbirds wow you have three angles from heaven! My dream!!First of course buying a house to accomodate them and not having to worry about neighbors!lol..would designate a room just for my parrots!!
I have a 13 year old B&G and a 16 year old goffins cockatoo. 2 of the most annoying yet most funny animals Ive ever known. Nasty little bite they have as well :P
I own the parents raise them and sell them. These where babies from 2007. In my profile there is a link to my web site. Check it out! I have 1 baby still available 10/26/2008

Aren't these birds endangered in the wild? Where does everyone keep getting them from? :/

@FreedomForOrcas They are bred in captivity. People don't usually capture animals from the wild to keep as pets.
