Ried's choice of words were racist but he was telling a very ugly truth. The president's apperance/speech is acceptable to American voters.Trent Lott applauded Turmond's efforts to continue segregation. What's wrong though about what Reid said? The word negro was popular in 60's and 70's. Back then, "Negro" or "colored" was ok to say. Black was used as well.

"Darkie" was not ok to say since probebly the 1800's...although I like that term. spade, spook, jig, jungle bunny and porch monkey are negitive slang. So is "negra", which is the southren way to say "negro", and of course nigger is not accepted.
