In a strange way, I think this song sounds like a parody of Billy Joel. I know that Billy Joel was not really a caricature yet, in 1977, but this song sort of presages that.
The only other place I ever heard this was on KLOR radio in Ponca City, Ok., during the summer of 78. Great memories and great fun. Thanks for posting.
@flipwiggins Hey, did you ever listen to KOMA out of Oklahoma City? That was a huge station-- at night anyway. They'd crank it up after about 6 or so, and I was a whole state away and listened almost every night. I'll never forget their jingle-- Kaaayohemaaay, Ooklahoma Citeeeeee.
I guess I should go search it before I post, but I know this song came out while I was still in high school-- I graduated in 77.
Hadn't thought about it in many years until last night. Glad to see it's up.
Mandan, huh? I'm very interested in the Mandans and Hidatsas, so I'm curious about your name. Or maybe it's just Crazy Man Dan!!!! Anyway, yes I occasionally listened to KOMA back in the day. I lived in a real small town in OK., and at nighttime on the AM side of my radio, I could also get WLS out of Chicago, and WOAI in San Antonio. Yeahhh, it's cool that this song is posted here. It reminds me of a real sweet girl I knew back then. Cheers.
@flipwiggins Sorry, it's just crazy man dan. I am interested in Native American history though. Never thought about the Mandan thing before, ha.
I remember WLS too but it didn't come in as good out here as KOMA. It's crazy to remember those days though, isn' it? Then FM killed AM, MTV killed them all, and now look what we've got.
Most of the music today can't hold a candle to this old stuff, though. Better days, long gone, if you ask me. Now everything just looks and sounds the same.
That Ariel Pink cover is one of my favorite Ariel Pink songs, and I love me some Ariel Pink. I was hoping someone would have posted that one somewhere on youtube.
God...this is awesome. Unlucky Fried Kitten made a parody...and I had to check this out. It has some amazing words and is sososo clever. I love it. I am now a new fan of Mr Dean Friedman...wicked
Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti covers this song on one of his underground albums. It is a very, very good album, that i found on mediafire, its called YAS DuDette. The song Stevie Storm is a 15 or 16 min song, but its more like 3 individual songs, he covers this song at about 4 min in. He does a good job, he is a pop genius and this is a great pop song, so he does a real good job.
