I would really like to buy one of these since I've been looking at them since I was very young, however I've been told by many friends/relatives to stay away because of their inconstant groups. I'm just not sure if it's user error or an issue with the way the barrel meets with the action of the rifle.... I just don't want to spend the money and then be disappointed with it's performance even though I know it'll be a fun shooter.

so i made a big mistake the other day. i bought a mini-14 w a stainless barrel. I still dont know how i missed it but the gun is chambered in .222. i just assumed it was .223 and was in a hurry, well needless to say wallymarts doesnt carry ammo. ive yet to fire it!

Hi, can I ask you, what do you mainly use it for? They call it the ranch rifle, do you live on a ranch? It's not really a hunting rifle, or maybe you could use it against deer or small game. Coyotes etc.

@TigerMeadows I just plink and shoot targets with it. I like it because it looks a little bit like an M14. (Mine has the wood stock.) I'm a sucker for milsurp.

Most guys I know think the .223 cartridge is a little undersized for deer - it's probably more appropriate for varmints. If I lived on a ranch I'd use it to cull prairie dogs.

@issenterprise1 close, it's a civvy design on the m14, which is based off of and uses the m1 garand action. M2 carbine is the mini 14's great uncle. Handsome devil that mini 14, kept all the good traits of the family.

Really like your mag pouch system. During the early part of the Vietnam war I made use of an unorthodox pouch too. It was secured by two large safety pins and carried a different kind of load.

I'm looking into getting a Mini-14 here soon. I would prefer to buy new, but not sure which model I would want. I obviously don't need anything fancy because I shoot purely for fun and I already have a home defense weapon. Any suggestions on which model to look at? The website can only tell you so much so I like to ask people who actually own and shoot the guns to get a better opinion on them.

@Kragoblin I got the 581 ranch series (new model) you can get them new for about $650 +/- a bit depending where you go, finish type, and stock... I love it; very reliable, accurate, and customizable. They are so easy to take down and maintain. Buy it and don't look back, you wont regret it.

@Kragoblin The model in the vid is about $100-200 more than the ranch version... They are the same except for barrel length. hickok's is a 16" "tactical" model with a ruger flash hider, the "ranch" model is a 18" without the flash hider But you can buy some pretty cool after market flash hider/ muzzle breaks for about $20. I have a couple vids on my channel with my mini... I have it all "tacticooled" out.

I had a mini-30 everytime I went out I never brought enough ammo. My CA legal ten round mags would be empty before I knew it. It was a tac driver contrary to what people say, it would hit the 400yd gong every time I held the sights a foot high. Had to sell it to buy a pistol though...

We are having some problems with our patrol rifles with the 5.56 and 223. I have only seen it on Ar-15 platforms but they are stamped for 5.56 but the barrels are not. Turns out the barrels are not throated for both.

@Ozgunner64 I own one, they are a great little rifle. Super fun to shoot with mild recoil and are pretty accurate. Awesome short range deer rifle, mine has at least 2 deer killed by it. And if you live out where over penetration isn't a danger it is a great home defense carbine. So yes I highly recommend.
