What Connors had agains Agassi? Every time that they plays, I have the feeling that, for Connors, its like a matter of honor to win and to make fun of him...
Connors could have had the ugliest looking ground strokes of all time. His footwork is terrible, especially when compared to Agassi's. It's a freak of nature that Connors was as good as he was.
@junghoonsurvey Ugliest strokes of all time??? I have been watching tennis for over 30 years and have never heard anyone say that before. His footwork was terrible??? Most world-class tennis experts will tell you that Connors, together with Borg, had the best footwork back in those days. His footwork was exceptionally good.
@kamretnas Well you should talk to all my friends on my college team, because we would imitate Connors in practice and exaggerate how ugly his form was. Actually, I take back the footwork comment...it was good, just goofy looking...especially on his backhand approach. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and you like ugly people.
Interesting fact: Andre's father was a master stringer and who strang Jimmy's rackets for him in the 1970's, and Andre would deliver them to Jimmy in a bag back then.
it seems that agassi used much more top spin on his forehand strokes back than. yeah, and connors is a real dick, he reminds me somehow of max hardcore. scary
"I let it go too long." Yeah, right, like you were in total control, Jimmy. More like Agassi got his typical early career jitters before finishing you off.
@ReformedPastorJude He was 37 here. He was 39 in 1991. Thats when he had his legendary run. But the one he had here in '89 wasnt half bad either. Jimbo was amazing.
@mickthequick71 Good catch. yeah i got those two years mixed up, thanks for the clarification. Indeed, Jimbo was amazing. Man, i miss those days of tennis!!!
@mrbobevans Well said connors is a complete jackass. He acts like everyone and the world is beneath him. I've had the isfoutune o meeting and dealing with him several times and each time I have the same feeling afterwars. This guy is a complete jackass. Agassi hoever was extremly nice and tried to make everyone around him feel important. i've only met him twice but each time he acted like he ared that we were there.
@mrbobevans I'v never met Lendl, Borg or Federer, howevr I'e met Mcenoe two times. It was very quik and only in passing, but he was much nicer than we were especting. Maybe we got him on a good day or something.
@MrPernell27 Upon reading Agassi's book, Andre hates Connors. He really disliked Becker. He detested the way Chang interjected God into his tennis matches. He mentioned a lukewarm relationship with Courier but seems to be friendly with him now. He was ambivalent about Pete. He said they are too different personalities.
I've just read Andre's book and it talks about how Andre's dad used to string Connors' racquets when he came to play in Vegas and Connors would hit with his son Andre who awas about 7 or 8 at the time. Andre talks about how Connors was condescending like when Connors' entourage asked who's this kid, and when Andre's dad wasn't around he'd say something like "some schmuck who thinks his kid's gonna be a pro." When Agassi actually went pro he said he made it a point he would never lose to Jimbo.
That definetly sounds like Connors. I've hear a similar story from another player who said Connors was basically a complete dick to him when he was first coming on tour back in the late 80's. He said he it was as if Connors was going out of his way to make things more difficult for him.
Man this brings back memories. I'm a year younger than Agassi, so I was playing all of the junior tournaments when he was making a name for himself on the tour. I never played him, but always knew about him, especially after his run at the Volvo (Stratton Mountain, VT). I then saw him play in person in Portland, OR at an "exhibition-like match" (Russia vs. USA). McEnroe played Chesnokov & Agassi played a young Russian. Every time Agassi got a short ball, the point was over. A new game, new era.
Andre "whooped" him? Andre barely got out of the match alive...LOL! 37yr old Connors was twice Andre's age...Andre hit amazing shots and Jimmy kept up....Prime Jimbo (late 70's/early 80's) would have taken Andre out...Jimmy did beat Andre in a few exos after this, I am sure
Think about it, how much did Steffi Graf, Boris Becker, Pete Sampras, Ivan Lendl and Martina Navratilova make in endorsements in their prime. I bet Agassi made more than all of them combined and arguably with the exception of Becker were all much more accomplished than Agassi. To preserve those big endorsements, Agassi's management would have bought stock in the Hair Club for Men to ensure they took good care of the 2 toned mane that all the girls were going nuts over!
Either way the man made millions off a well targeted image campaign using his hair as part of the sell. If he ever decided to rip it off and go bald in 1988 he would have lost shitloads in endorsements.
You look at Agassi here and in 1988 and it is difficult to tell when this hair piece started. I think we were all fooled because Agassi was probably wearing it when he was 16 and was just starting to lose the hair. We never saw any transition from balding to mohawk wig mullet. I am curious to read his book and see when it started
Why was this match played during the day? Normally Agassi-Connors would have been a night match at the US Open. Was Lendl-Mayotte that big of a draw for a night match?
Without a doubt! And even so, Jimmy took him to the cleaners! Look at Agassi....he's been through the wringer, Connors looks better than him afterwards!

Funny that Connors chooses that phrase to motivate himself. In hindsight, Connors probably choked as much or more that any other HOF player.
