Phillipians 2 is one of my favorite passages in the bible! I love the part in the NIV where it says He did not consider equality with God something to be "grasped". It paints a picture of Him refusing to hold onto that equality, which was rightfully His, with a clenched fist and encourages us to do the same : )
p.s. my last comment was a reply to USAsoldier1955; I don't get why youtube, anymore, often puts replies at the top of comments rather than subsumed under what they're replying to. : (
I'm pretty sure what's meant by 'Christian hymn' are those songs written after Christ's advent and ascension, though yes it's arguable (intelligently) that those are also Christian, especially being foundational to Christian teaching with David as a Messanic prophet; furthermore, since some of those hymns are Messianic they also, in an even surer sense, could be called 'Christian', since 'Christ' is Greek for 'Messiah' (yes, I know both of those are anglicized forms). : )
He's right...it predates Phos Hilaron. The hymn is taken from Philippians 2:6-11, known in Latin as "Christus Iesus, cum in forma Dei esset". It's more widely used in the Roman liturgy than in the Byzantine liturgy. In the contemporary liturgy, it's sung during Second Vespers on Sundays.
Beautiful, but the oldest Christian hymn was from the 2nd century, called, "Fos Hilaron" which was originally written in Greek. Nevertheless, this is a beautiful hymn too.
have you ever heard of, 'intent'? if you KNEW the lyrics to this beautiful song, you woulda never made such a horrid remark. and....i dont know 'what god' you recognize..but i honor the ONE AND ONLY GOD,that sent his ONLY SON, JESUS, to this earth to teach us of HIS LOVE...read the KING JAMES...and, oyea, God Bless You
Awesome Rev. Rye! You have a beautiful voice. I've heard "Amazing Grace (He Looked Beyond My Faults)" to this tune, but didn't know there was another hymn for this tune.
This is great. I am going to teach a lesson on Act 16:25-34. I was wondering what song Paul and Silas might have sang while they were in prison. This is it. Thanks
2 of 2 stanzas Therefore God honored him above all others, Giving him a name above all other names, That at His Name every kne - e should bow Upon this earth, below and above as well. And every tongue confess Him as the Lord That God His Father might be glorified. There-fore rejoice and again I say rejoice; That all may know that the Lord is near at hand (last line repeats) I hope someone can use this beneficially. I am honored by he request. Kermit Rye

It's not quite the oldest Christian Hymn...ask the Syrian Christians
msal1964 1 year ago
@msal1964 Yes,the oldest Christian Hymn is the Phos Hilarion wich is allways sung in the Orthodox Vespers.
This one is older than many of the New Testament scriptures.

Actually, the Oldest Christian hymns are the Psalms, followed by Old testament and New Testament Canticles....of which this selection is an example.

Awesome. Philippians 2:10 cross references with Isaiah 45:23. Showing that Jesus is God.
What an incredible hymn and great testimony to our savior.

1 of 2 stanzas
Christ Jesus who, though in the form of God
Did not demand his rights as the Divine
But laid aside his mighty power and glory
And took the form of a slave becoming man.
And yet as man he was humbled even more,
Becoming obedient even un--to death,
And in his death he died as a crim-in-al,
Giving up his life upon that cruel Roman Cross
