I've probably watched this video 100X now. It just goes to show that you don't need a $3k Martin D-28 to play Hedges and make it sound authentic and passionate. You just need to practice your craft! After months of debating between Martins, I may have to go Blueridge instead.
I have made a YT account only to write you this: Noone can play this piece so perfectly except for Hedges, So there can be only one conclusion: Michael has REINCARNATED and his name now is Andrew Gorny. Any doubts, folks?
I was wondering why call it Ragamuffin, I was thinking the same purpose the cat was named Ragamuffin. They were going to call it something else (ragdoll) but the name was already taken and copyrighted. So there was a joke said at a meeting saying, why not call it Ragamuffin, having no other ideas they went with it.
Perhaps something similar went down and Michael Hedges thought of that. Or maybe he just got a Ragamuffin. =/
andrew, i finally got my fingers to move like yours and hedges in this video! ahh! i'm almost good enough at this to play it when I busk! one of these days we'll have to do a dueling guitar thing downtown! btw, it's steven. lol
I am learning this piece now (so I realize how difficult it is to play CORRECTLY!) Fabulous job, dude! This is the first YouTube I've seen that truly captures the spirit of the pieces. You are channeling Michael!
Very Good, you can hear a bit of John Fahey in Hedges compositions except Hedges always took thing even further.
John Fahey wasnt the most technical player but he is still important as one of those guitar players that helped set the foundation of fingerstyle the same way Chet did.
If it wasnt for John Fahey thier would probably be no Leo Kottke,Will Ackerman,Preston Reed,Andy ZMckee the list goes on.
Amazing cover. I have discovered Hedges through the contemporaries of this style and there is just something so magical about his compositions over every other. This is by far the best cover of Ragamuffin on youtube, both technically and in sonority. Michael, is that you?.....
I Haven't communicated in a long time. Destroyed my ring finger right hand in a fall and am relearning fingerpicking without it. Also flatpicking a lot.
This is a nice tune. I do like your melodic stuff better than, what shall I call it, the aggressive stuff.
Thanks for sharing your vids. You're a fantastic player. Not too many people can cover Hedges (especially this well). Very nice. Keep up the great music.
@jazzpsalti I have a similar set-up. Baggs M1 (agreed, much better than Sunrise!) and a K&K system. Sometimes don't bother with the Baggs because the K&K can handle it. But for bigger audiences the Baggs gives a bit of "Ooomph"!
Great music by the way, yours and the covers. Your Aerial Boundaries baffles me! In the throws of learning it now but it's a bit daunting! Really like the 'extras' of your own that you threw into it.
@AlbertMustang hey thanks man. I get a lot of comments on this video saying "stop doing hedges" and other stupid shit. But I just delete them, but it's nice to know someone appreciates that other people are trying to play his music.
I use slightly more elaborate a setup when playing live, but I always use the two pickups and basically have an "all purpose" signal that works in small or large venues.
@AlbertMustang Aerial Boundaries requires what I call "gentle deliberation" as I give to my students. All of the string stopping is not two motions as MANY teach, but is in fact ONE motion. The mute/pluck should be practiced as one motion. Once you can do it in every combination, you are prepared to tackle that middle section. From there, it is just a series of (now) simple movements. Don't pick though, that will make it impossible!!! Just be gentle, but be deliberate.
oh noes! you stopped. why why? continue up to your 50/50.
it doesn't matter that you're not perfect - it does matter that one can tell how much you love what you're doing when speeding up (hot type) to awesome =)
i'm once again listenint to this song. the added hall (a bit chorus also? coldn't tell) is great. it helps a lot. especially as this upload here is in a tempo that you are playing really fine at. some of your others seem a bit to speedy but this is just played so fine.
for a youtube upload done from "your home" this is really great. hopefully you did things in the last 6 months of your life that make you happy. =)
what a nice thing to say !!! It is hard to capture the phrasing of another artist always. We all have our own little idioms that make our style US... glad to know that I'm picking up on at least part of it!!! take care
Yeah, buddy! Great performance, Andrew. You captured the feeling and the mystery of Hedges in this one! I haven't learned any Michael Hedges tunes yet, but now I think I want to try this one out.
By the way, the Blueridge sounds great! Do you have two jacks going into it??? What are your sound sources for these recordings?
@Muhlenburger LOL I do have 2 jacks but only one of them has been working apparently....
The Blueridge is a hell of a guitar. I'm just terrible at micing so it doesn't sound as great as it could... but it's pretty good here, as good as I can stand to make it without going crazy... after all, it's only youtube :)
I am piping in a slice of that LR Baggs M1A soundhole pickup, just to reinforce the bass... as I'm sure Hedges probably did too
This is really amazing! Great job on probably my favourite Hedges song. Actually this is one of my favourite solo guitar compositions period. Beautifully played!
Michael lives every time you play.

@AlbertMustang Yeah! It's the M1A. I like it better for my sound than the Sunrise, though I don't think it's in the mix here...

Extremely fine guitar and cheap, I play it to. I already was considering a blueridge, but I saw you playing it and decided to buy it.
Extremely well performence of this masterpiece.
What pickups are you using in this vid?
